Sweet Desire

Chapter 8

"We're all in the same game; just different levels. Dealing with the same hell; just different Devils"

~~~~~
"H-HEY!" Adam smiled and held out his arms as if welcoming a hug. Adam tried not to wince in pain.
Ian sighed and face palmed behind Adam because in front of Adam stood Tyler. A scowl was planted on his face as he looked Adam up and down before slamming the door to his home in Adam's face.
"N-No wait!" Adam placed his hands on the door and knocked, "I need to speak to you, it is important!"
"Not interested!" Tyler yelled from inside, "I have more research to do, because someone else wanted to abandon his friend for some corrupt ass kingdom!"
"Tyler please! I'm sorry. I know you don't forgive me for convincing the others to move on. But it is not because I don't care for Seto, I just couldn't risk the extra loss of lives while we were already neck-deep in a war."
No reply.
"Tyler, Emedo is my home. You have to understand that despite everything I am still their prince and that I have an obligation to make Emedo prosperous and happy. That meant dethroning my father, who, need I remind you, was the cause of much of Seto's grief!"
"But Seto isn't here to know that, is he?" To Adam's left a window was pushed open and Tyler poked his head out to yell towards Adam.
Adam perked up and left the door to head to the window but Tyler closed it as he neared. Adam leaned against the window and sighed, "Tyler please hear me out. It's about Seto."
"Don't you have a beloved kingdom to fawn over? Leave the rescuing to people who actually care," Tyler opened his door and threw at Adam a book. Adam ducked and winced in pain.
The door slammed shut and Adam slumped to the ground.
"Adam, give it up--" Ian said.
"No, I need to tell Tyler," Adam stood with new energy.
"Tell him what?" Ian questioned
Adam turned back to the window, "Tyler, I know you may not believe me...but I think I know a way to bring Seto back. Please believe me when I say this despite what you think about me."
No reply.
Adam sighed, his breath fogged up the glass, "I'm heading to the gateway now. I plan to bring Seto and Max back. So if you want to see him, then...you are welcome to come with...All of you."
Adam turned away. Ian's face confused Adam so he asked, "What?"
"Did you say you know how to bring Seto back? How?"
"It's complicated, just trust me. We need to head to the gateway now."
"We have to cross a river..." Ian deadpanned.
Adam flinched, "...We need to head to the gateway," Adam reaffirmed.
The two of them walked away from the house. Inside the house Tyler leaned against the door. He looked up when he saw Red and Ross come down the stairs.
"Is it true? Does Prince Adam really know a way to bring Max back?" Ross asked.
Tyler frowned, "N-no. Of course not, we've been searching for ages, there is no way some prince would figure it out after pushing our friends to be a 2nd priority. He's just saying things to get us to forgive him.
"But what's if he does knowns a ways?" Barney came down the stairs and stood beside Red, "Shouldn'ts wes gos anyways to see if it is trues?"
"Like I said," Tyler pushed off from the door and walked towards them, "Impossible."
Tyler pushed his way past them and up the stairs. He stopped halfway, "But if you want to waste your time to follow, be my guest. I'll do actual work and do more research." Tyler walked up the remaining steps and stopped at the doorway to his room.
He waited and listened. After a few moments he heard the front door open and slam shut. He scowled and shook his head.
He trudged to his desk and slumped forward in the chair. He was careful not to move any of the books stacked on the edge or mess with the papers piled in the corner. If they all wanted to believe Adam's lies then so be it.
Tyler reached for his quill, his hand bumped into the ink jar and it tumbled to the floor spilling all its contents on the wooden floor.
"Fuck!"
Tyler exclaimed and threw his arms up into the air and sunk into his chair. His body slid closer to the floor and he groaned.
~~~~~

"Prince Adam wait!" Red shouted and waved. Ross and Barney were not with him, "We want to come with!"

Adam and Ian stopped walking and turned around.

"You are welcome to, it's a long walk. Let's hurry."

"Actually..." Red looked back and saw Barney and Ross leading two horse over to Red, "These horses might be faster."

Adam's face lit up, "Horses! Thank Notch! Let's go then!"

Red grinned at Ross and Barney.

Ian and Adam shared a horse, only because Ian did not trust Adam to do it alone because of his injuries. And because Adam's fear of rivers and such would prevent him from staying calm anyways. Barney and Ross shared one horse and Red took another by himself.

"Sos Prince Adams, how do yous knows the ways to bring Maxs back?" Barney yelled over the thundering hoofbeats of their three galloping horses.

"It's complicated, just believe the gods are on our side," truthfully, this was all Adam could say at this point in time. He still wasn't 100% sure if his vision was a dream or a reality, but he just had to believe it meant something.

Adam gripped Ian's shirt tighter causing Ian to glance back at him slightly. Ian noticed the faintest hint of a wrinkled brow and knew Adam was worrying, but he remained silent allowing Adam to think.

Seto, I'm sorry...and...we are coming for you, Adam thought to himself. He held tightly to that thought and pushed away all his doubts.

They rode in silence.

~~~~~
There was but one moment when that silence was broken...and of course it was during the moment they all crossed the river.
Adam could not contain his screams and one wondered how a guy like him was blessed by a god. Of course only Adam knew he was blessed by a god and even he was unsure of the reason why.
At the gateway Ross dismounted first. He held tightly to the sleeve of his sweater and glanced frequently from the gateway to Adam who was receiving help from Ian to safely dismount.
Adam hid his discomfort and pain well, even fooling Ian.
Red and Barney dismounted their horses and also waited as Adam got off his.
"Thank you Ian," Ian nodded to Adam.
"Red and Barney, tie the horses up at those trees. We don't want them fleeing by some happenence."
"Sure thing!"
"Gots it!"
This left on Ross and his antsy feet, "W-we're here...Is it really possible. Will we finally see our friend?"
Adam walked towards Ross and placed a gentled hand on Ross' shoulder, "Have faith, they will return."
Red and Barney returned after tying the horses up and Ian walked up calmly behind Adam.
"Adam, I think it is time you start explaining all of this. I have been following you like you asked, but I still don't understand how you plan to bring Seto back."
Adam looked away from their expectant eyes and looked to the portal. Its black obsidian frame held within it a swirling purple mass that lead to a location different than where Seto and Max were.
His nerves were picking up and he battled with the thought of telling them all what he saw that day he killed his...his father, or lying.
"You see..."
Adam paused and looked to the sky, "I had a vision. The day the war was finally won I had a vision."
"A vision" Red prompted.
"Y-yes..." Adam opened his mouth and shut it once more.
"We must pray."
"What?" Ross stumbled forward in disbelief.
"The vision told me to pray..." now he'd done it...
Adam turned to face them and placed a smile on his lips that danced convincingly along his face, "We must pray for their return."
"We've already tried that, but it is impossible! When gods don't exist...there is nothing to pray to. Even when we have all tried to believe in a higher power, nothing helps," Ross said, "Is this what you brought us all here for? To kneel and pray?"
Adam kept the smile on his face and held out his hand to Ross. Ross looked at it and hesitated before taking it. Adam lead him to the gate, "This gate is the only thing that connects us to them--"
"And it doesn't work," Ross grumbled.
"Not with that attitude. Listen to me Ross--all of you," Adam turned to everyone again.
"Our beliefs are different. I believe in the gods, you do not, that is fine. But I'm not asking you to pray to the gods. I'm asking you all to pray. Pray to our friends safe return. Have faith that fate will bring them all home safely.
"Don't believe in the gods if you don't want to...believe in yourself...believe in Seto and Max. I'm sure neither of them have given up on reuniting themselves with all of us here in Ethereal.
"You may not believe it, but belief is the first step towards progression. If you believe they will return, then they will. And maybe by chance this portal will work once more.
"So at the very least, close your eyes, all of you, and let's just pray together. Then I'll tell you what happened in the rest of my dream."
Adam was amazed at the words that poured from his tongue, but he felt the immense weight of guilt for having blatantly lied to all of them in their face. He never had a vision about praying, he just needed a moment--a chance to try and figure out how he could bring Seto and Max back like Herobrine had said he could.
Adam looked to them all and was glad to see that they closed their eyes. He glanced at Roos who looked at Adam with unsure eyes before he too closed them.
Adam turned to face the portal. He only had a few moments. His hand reached for the portal frame and he asked himself, what do I need to do to make you work?
He knew there would be no answer, but he still asked anyways.
Please.
Please bring them back.
Adam gasped as purple sparks fluttered from the quiet portal. Had something happened?
Adam looked back at Ross and everyone, they hadn't opened their eyes yet.
He looked back and kept his hand on the portal and hoped again.
Bring them back.
~~~~~

Tyler couldn't believe he dragged himself into this. He also couldn't believe Red, Barney, and Ross had left him a horse. Did they think he was coming?

Well, he did come.

Tyler tied his horse to a tree a good 10 minute walk from the gateway. He really wasn't expecting anything, but curiosity had gotten the better of him.

Tyler walked through the trees and poked his head into the opening.

He saw them; Red, Barney, Ross, Ian, and Adam were all facing the gateway and standing. Tyler sighed, he was sure nothing would happen, he was sure...

Tyler's eyes widened and he rubbed his eyes thinking he had seen an illusion. He saw a hand emerge from the portal and suddenly a whole leg.

Someone was actually coming out of the portal.
