Chapter 3.
1954
As my group of friends and I walked into the auditorium, there was immediately music blasting into our ears. Slow and agonizing country music fill up my mind and in seconds I want to leave. I look towards Adam and see him regretting his decision to come as well. My lips lift up into a smile once I see Elvis standing in the wings looking over the audience obviously nervous. His hands were shaking and his foot was tapping the floor aggressively, I hope he's a good singer. I spot a group of chairs that are open that would perfectly seat my group of friends. I quickly reach for my friend Lizzie's hand and pull her towards the seats before anyone else snatches the seats up.
"Perfect steal, huh?" Adam says sarcastically and I roll my eyes jokingly, he's insinuating the fact that we're basically sitting in the last row. "Well that's what we get for having a friend group full of nine people" I reply with a smug smile on my lips. As the slow and horrid country music comes to a stop, I watch closely as Elvis walk onto the stage. It's obvious he's nervous, he's got sweat rolling down his face and his fingers keep on twitching like crazy, poor guy. I lean over to my group of friends and whisper that Elvis is the man that invited me to see him sing and my friends look at me with wide eyes, "Elvis asked you to come?! His songs have been popular around Memphis for weeks!" Donna exclaimed. My eyes widen and look back to Elvis, damn I'm stupid.
As soon as he sings the first word of his song, I'm absolutely mesmerized. Every single girl in this auditorium was watching how he shook his body and not one person's eyes could leave him, his moves were enchanting. Girls started cheering and screaming, some even ran up to the stage trying to grab him. Donna turned to me, "You're one lucky girl Ann Marie." I look back at her, "This is insane." I watched his eyes as he was obviously trying to look out for a specific person, I'm really hoping he was looking for me. His dark chocolate eyes met with mine and his voice exploded into something so magical, he was belting out the lyrics now and shaking like crazy. I have never seen anything like this and I loved every single second of it. This music was upbeat and my type of music, rock n' roll. I grabbed Donna's hand and forced her to dance with me right on the spot. She looked at me like I was insane but quickly went along with it. As I was jumping up and down with Donna I looked at Elvis and he was starting right at me with a certain look in his eyes I couldn't decipher. I stop dancing to catch my breath as Donna grabbed our friend, Peter, and started to dance with him. I was standing and just staring right into Elvis' eyes, I winked and sat down. I turned toward Adam and laugh, "I have never seen anything like this and I love it." Adam chuckles, "That's what rock n' roll does to you."
The music eventually stops and the crowd is cheering for more, "Sorry folks! Got a special girl waiting to see me." Elvis spoke into the microphone and winked right at me. I lifted my eyebrows and winked right back at him, this is so weird I've winked at this man twice in less than three minutes. The girls around me started to sit back down into their chairs and I got up to go find Elvis. "Guys I'll be back in gonna go see Elvis!" I say to my friends and run off before any of them could say anything to me.
I walked to the back of the building since I heard a lot of talking and I movement from back there. I huddled into Elvis' leather jacket a little more, looking for warmth. His cologne scent filling into my nose, "Hey there Ann Marie." I hear a familiar voice say. I turn around and quickly embrace Elvis into a hug, "That was the absolute best thing I have ever seen in my life! It was incredible I have never danced that hard to music before!" I exclaimed as I let go of the hug. Elvis' eyes lit up, "I'm so glad you liked it, doll." he replied to me. "The way you danced too! I've never seen anything like it." I told him and watched his lips tug into a smile, "I've never done that before it was so odd! The music and nerves just made me move but people seemed to love it" He spoke to me with such joy in his voice I couldn't help but widen my smile at him.
"Is that my Jacket Marie?" he asks me with a jokingly stern tone. I like how he just called me Marie, it sounded so perfect with his southern accent. "Well, you told me to wear it when I'm outside and well... I'm outside and cold!" I giggle at him. He smirks down at me, "Can I walk you home?" he questioned. "Hm, let me think about that one," I say as I put on an exaggerated thinking face, obviously joking. "I don't see why not Mr. rock n' roll singer." I finally answer his question. He chuckles and puts his arm around my shoulders, offering me some more warmth.
I tell Elvis my address and we start our walk all the way back to my house. I cannot believe how the man next to me was just surrounded by hundreds of girls screaming at his singing and dancing and now he's walking me home while I'm wearing his jacket. I look back up at his face as we walk in comfortable silence, his features match so well. I'm just admiring his face as he looks down at me. His eyes are glistening with the same look he had when he was on stage just a few minutes ago. I try to look away so I wouldn't be caught creepily looking at his face. I hear him chuckle, "Marie you are such a beautiful girl." he says to me. "Why thank you," I say looking back at his face.
"Hey Elvis." I say, "Yeah?" he replies. "You are such a beautiful man." I tell him. I stop walking because we arrived at my house, wow that was quick. He turns towards me and I look into his eyes, which were still adorned with the same look as earlier. He looks up at my house and looks right back at me. I don't want this moment to end, I want to look at his face forever. We're both just looking at each other's faces and adoring each other's features. I suddenly become aware of how close my face was to his and I think he came to the same realization because I watched as his eyes quickly look down to my lips. I give him a small smile and he looks at my lips once more. "May I kiss you?" he asks me. Too nervous to speak, I softly nod my head at him and he immediately attaches his lips to mine. I am absolutely terrified I haven't kissed a boy since 9th grade and that boy was Adam because he wanted to practice how to kiss so he could kiss his crush the next day after school. I let myself relax and this kiss ended seconds after that and I look into Elvis' eyes once more. I met this guy earlier today and I'm already kissing him and I don't regret it one bit. I turn my back to him and walk up my porch steps with some pep in my step and take off his jacket. I hand it over to him and he looks at it and then back to me, "keep it." he says "You look pretty in it." I smile at him.
"I'll wear it every day, I promise."
