Chapter Four
"Holy hell." Audrey cooed, "That new kid is one fine guy."
I silently scoffed, crossing my arms as I sat back in my seat. Audrey sipped her strawberry milkshake as she stared at James who was talking across the street with Bart Langley, the owner of 'Bart's Auto-Shop' in the middle of town.
Currently, Ellis, Audrey and I were sitting in our normal booth by the big window in the Moonlight Diner that sat towards the beginning of the busy part of Main Street.
This was the local hangout spot here in Bernice- where all the people who were anyone came after school.
"How come he knew your name?" Ellis asked, popping a French fry into her mouth. She passed me the piece of apple pie I ordered.
I picked up my fork, beginning to run it over the pie crust that sat before me. "My dad's pretty popular- maybe he's met him already?"
Ellis and Audrey both laughed.
"Yea right." Audrey spat, rolling her eyes playfully.
"There's no way he knows you from your father. Molls- I saw the way he stared you down all class. There's definitely something more going on." Ellis raised her eyebrows.
I dropped the fork down on my plate, "I'm not a cheater."
"Nobody's calling you a-"
"Oh, please." I rolled my eyes, "You know I'm with Will, and by accusing me of suspicious activity with that wanderer is accusing me of cheating."
Ellis and Audrey both looked at each other, before turning back to me with their hands up in defense.
"Geez- we didn't mean to piss you off." Audrey explained.
"Are you okay, Molls?" Ellis asked me.
I quickly shook my head, "I'm fine."
The last thing I wanted to do was lie to my two best friends- but I also didn't want them to find out he was staying behind my house. Speaking of finding out, I have to find a way to convince Will to stay quiet about James. Knowing him, he's probably already told multiple people- so I need to get to him soon.
"Where's Will?" I asked, thinking the two girls in front of me would know where my boyfriend is.
Audrey shrugged, "Stan said they were on their way."
"They're right there." Ellis interrupted, pointing to the diner doors as they swung open and three, muscular bodies stepped inside. They all looked around until Stan pointed to our table. Then, they came over- beginning to crowd our booth.
Will was the only one who remained standing. "Molly- can I talk to you, please?"
I nodded, grabbing my things and standing up to follow Will outside the diner. Once we reached the sidewalk, Will began to lose it.
"You want to tell me who that guy is yet?" He asked, nodding towards James who was still talking to Bart.
I sighed, "I tried to tell you earlier- my dad brought him home last night. He gave him the keys to the barn, and now he's living behind my house."
Will looked furious. I watched in regret as he ran his hands through his curly hair with such frustration. I shouldn't have told him the truth- I should've just lied and somehow played it off.
"How could you let your father do that?"
I scoffed, "You're kidding me, right? You think I have the power to do that?"
Will shrugged, "You should have at least some influence."
I crossed my arms, "Do you hear yourself right now?"
Will nodded, "Yea- and I sound like I'm making a good point."
I stared at him in disbelief. How could he think for a second that what he was saying was accurate? None of it is! Everybody knows that the father is the man of the house, and nobody else gets any influential power over him.
"This is ridiculous." Will huffed, "Im disappointed in you."
"What was I supposed to do?" I yelled, "This wasn't my decision."
"You could've said no!"
I immediately fought the urge to slap him. He was being so inconsiderate right now, and such a total dick. Why do I even bother with him?
I shook my head, "Can you just- not tell anyone?" I raised one eyebrow, "Or is that too much to ask?"
This time, he rolled his eyes. "Whatever- but only because I don't want to look like a fool. Do you have any idea what people will say if they find out this street rat was living with my girlfriend?"
Will walked away, as I stayed behind- watching him with shock and confusion. Isn't that how I'm supposed to be feeling?
I looked over in the window to see Audrey and Ellis staring directly at me. Ellis leaned over to Audrey, before they both said things to each other.
I knew what they were saying. They were talking about how Will and I always fought like this. I don't blame them either, because it's awful. No young couple should ever fight the way we do.
"Are you alright?" His familiar voice asked me, his hand resting itself on my shoulder.
I quickly threw it off, "I'm fine- just don't touch me."
James shook his head with a smirk, "I was only trying to be supportive."
"Well, I don't need your support." I snapped, tucking my flyaway behind my ears. "Can you do me a favor and leave me alone?"
James slowly backed up against the side of the diner, putting his hands up and lowering his head with a smug look. Great, now I wanted to slap two people.
I walked over to the window Ellis and Audrey sat behind, and banged on it. "Let's go- we're leaving".
They quickly nodded, grabbing their things and rushing outside to my aid.
"Are you alright- did he say anything to hurt you?" Ellis asked, putting her arm around my shoulder.
"Do i need to kick his ass?" Audrey chimed in, making google-y eyes towards James.
"I just need you to take me home." I said, glueing my eyes to James'.
They both nodded, directing me towards Ellis' parked car behind the Diner. All three of us piled in, and just like that, we were off.
On the way out, I somehow managed to lock eyes with James again. His dark, mysterious eyes sent shivers throughout my whole body.
There was something about him I wanted to know. Maybe I just wanted to know what his deal was- why he all of a sudden ended up here in the back of my barn. That doesn't just happen, and especially not here.
Who was this James guy?
