006. The Nickname Debate

Caroline missed dancing. Since she had moved to the town a week ago, she hadn't moved her hips at all. Not even when she listened to Shakira in the morning when she got dressed or in the afternoon when she did her homework and played NSYNC. Now, dancing with Harvey, she felt incredibly free, like those puppet strings had been cut and she was finally on her own. Despite Harvey holding her down by the hips, she felt that she could soar to cloud nine.

Who was she kidding? Dancing with Harvey Kinkle was cloud nine.

The cold atmosphere of Greendale had begun growing on Caroline, and while it was borderline creepy, she was getting comfortable and used to it. After all, she didn't know how long she'd be staying. As if reading her mind, Harvey cleared his throat and interrupted the beautiful silence surrounding the pair as he walked her home— although it wasn't completely quiet since they could hear each of their shoes patting down the mushy mud under the soles of their sneakers. "How long are you staying in town, Caroline?" he looked up from the dark mud and looked at the way the brunette had been carrying herself. While Harvey walked like he struggled to keep his shoulders up because they were so heavy, Caroline walked like she was a tall sunflower in a large field of pumpkins.

Except that she was under five foot five and Harvey was six-foot, so really, if anyone were a sunflower it would be him.

She took a deep breath before answering. "I don't know. It could be weeks, months or forever."

Nothing was heard except their feet smooshing down the hardening mud for a couple more seconds. "Why are you here, mystery girl? If you don't mind me asking."

Caroline tilted her head. "You guys don't get a lot of tourists here, do you?" Harvey shook his head no. "That's what I thought. Olivia said most of her customers are out-of-state so she ships those bracelets off to them after school."

Harvey looked around at the beautiful yet dark and misty horizon. Not much was able to be seen. "Olivia is something else."

"Did you know that curiosity killed the cat, Kinkle?" Caroline shifted her gaze again to watch Harvey in an annoying yet charming way. It was an old habit, she used to flirt with the Bulldogs on the field and in the hallways of her old school the same way, acting like she was an innocent and cute girl. Her stomach twisted slightly because it reminded her of the girl she used to be. So much for changing.

Harvey nodded. "You're acting like I'm trying to open Pandora's Box."

"Who says you're not?" Caroline asked. Two seconds later, she burst out in a fit of laughter. "Oh God, that's funny."

"Okay, fair enough. You have any friends back on your side of the river?" he swiftly moved his head forward.

Caroline nodded. "Oh yeah."

"Tell me about them."

This got to Caroline's heart, sending a mass wave of butterflies throughout her body. She skipped a little and fell in line right beside Harvey, looping her arm in his. "I'm so glad you asked. First, there's Cheryl, she and I have been best friends since diapers. She used to have trouble with speech, so as kids she would call me Lime. Don't call me Lime. Only Cheryl can call me Lime."

"Okay."

Caroline absentmindedly nodded. "Cheryl went through a lot. Lost her brother and dad in the same year and her mom is kind of a witch," she chuckled. "Then Veronica moved to Riverdale and we clicked so well together. Cheryl and her may not always see eye to eye, but at the end of the day we're all on the same team," she took a deep breath.

"That's inspirational. You should write dialogue for movies."

Caroline slapped his arm. "I'm being serious."

Harvey giggled as he clutched his arm with his free hand. They looked like a couple going for a stroll in another decade. "Yeah, I know," his smile faded. "You must really miss them."

Caroline felt a pang in her heart. "I do."

"Your friends didn't have any peach puns for you?" his thick eyebrows furrowed, drawing Caroline's attention to the wrinkling in between his pretty puppy eyes. Caroline wanted to rub her thumb and smooth it out, Kinkle was too pretty for wrinkles. But she refrained from touching him.

"No, just the lime one."

"So what am I supposed to call you, mystery girl?"

"Anything else."

"How about, peaches?"

"How original."

"Work with me here," he whined as they arrived on the small front lawn of Johnny's house.

"I dunno. We'll brainstorm tomorrow," she said as they stopped in their tracks, Caroline letting go of Harvey's arm and shifting so she was standing in front of him.

"Will you let me walk you to class?" Harvey slightly bit his lower lip.

Caroline pursed her lips.  "Sure. Why not?"

Caroline had been in a bit of a daze from her peaceful morning.  Once she got to school, a preppy Harvey was ready to walk her to class just as promised.  Everything else didn't matter.

Therefore, it was hard to focus on the current conversation at hand, even if it was just a few girls gathered in the room.  "You guys, we were just talking about how we've been waiting a long time for a group like this," Susie said.  "And not just at Baxter High, but in Greendale."

"Agreed."

"Yeah."

"Uh, welcome, one and all, to WICCA.  Uh, let's pass around the sign-in sheet."

"Sorry I'm late, girls," Miss Wardwell stepped into the room, her pencil skirt hugging her legs in an elegant way.  Apparently, from what Caroline had heard from Harvey, Miss Wardwell never used to dress in slimming pencil skirts or showcase her large curls but instead wear a bun and glasses and dressed like an ordinary conservative school teacher. Caroline couldn't tell if she liked Miss Wardwell or not.

"Ms, Wardwell," Sabrina said, sounding surprised.  "No, you're, uh you're right on time.  You do know that just because you're our faculty advisor doesn't mean you have to attend every meeting, right?"

"Oh, but I want to, Sabrina," he paused giving Sabrina time to answer, which she did with a nod. "As long as you're at Baxter High, I want us working extremely closely on this."

"Right," Caroline said. "Let me just go to the bathroom real quick," she got up and walked out into the hallway, running into Harvey and his signature jacket that was beginning to grow on Caroline.

"Sabrina Spellman, please report to Principal Hawthorne's office.  Sabrina Spellman to the principal's office."

"Hey handsome," Caroline grinned.

"I was wondering when I might run into you," Harvey walked towards her. "Nice shirt," he pointed to her torso, a tee shirt with a design of the horror movie Scream from the 90s. Before Caroline could even reply, she was interrupted.

"Harvey."

"Sabrina. Hey. I got your messages."

"It was a super-intense weekend with my aunts."

"Don't worry about me, as long as you're okay."

"I am. I think I am. I'll explain everything as soon as I can."

"Right," Caroline cut in, feeling like she had already been excluded. "Well if you need anything, I'm always around," she smiled, trying her best to mimic what she thought she looked like a couple of moments ago when she saw Harvey. Harmonious, blissful even.

"Yeah, me too," Harvey added. "I'm here for you, 'Brina."

Caroline nodded.  "Right. Of course we are."
