Chapter 6: Lantana
A few weeks passed. Rudi and I would meet up every now and then, just to get to know each other. It didn't happen often. The news showed Team Miasma attacking various places. Most recently was Castelia City, where a few shops had to close for the week, including the famous Castelia Cone stand.
People, including Rudi, weren't very happy about that. Then again, Rudi was most disappointed as he couldn't stop them in time. He didn't open up much, keeping his typical attitude up. The only reason we got together so often was when he was in town. I guess I wanted to see if I couldn't get him to open up a bit.
After all, he knew the truth about me.
On a Saturday afternoon, Nurse Joy told me of a package that needed to be picked up from the library. Ducklett, who was fully recovered, and had a regular Poké Ball that was always attached on my belt, hopped in my arms as we walked over to the library to retrieve the package.
Things were picking up once again. Trainers came from all over to challenge the Gym Leader, while tourists were just passing through because they took the wrong boat over to Unova. Usually, tourists wanted to head straight to Castelia City, or take a train to Nimbassa City. So if tourists came here, they weren't in the place they wanted to be.
Lenora, the Gym Leader and librarian of the Nacrene Library, handed me the package when I got there. Nurse Joy didn't tell me what was inside, but holding it, I could tell it was probably just some bunch of medicine and supplies the Pokémon Center was running low on. The only question I had was why it was sent here rather than the Pokémon Center.
Curiously enough, even Nurse Joy wasn't sure of it either.
Still, I took the package and walked back, this time, with Ducklett flying beside me. It was odd to think that things weren't always like this. With Ducklett by my side, I felt safer and even a bit happier than what things used to be. Not that I really needed to worry about that. Nacrene City was my home after all, but knowing that there was a time where she wasn't around seemed odd. Just remembering that made me feel a bit out of place.
Nacrene City was just where I belonged. Everything might have been the same, but at least I knew this was what I was meant to do: do chores and tasks for Nurse Joy, heal Pokémon and learn about them until I become a Pokémon Nurse myself one day, and keep Ducklett company.
That's how things always went, and I was okay with that.
"Help!" someone screamed on the top of their lungs.
Ducklett and I exchanged looks. We still had a ways to go before we could make it to the Pokémon Center, but we couldn't just leave someone in danger, not when it would be my job to keep Pokémon safe by being a Pokémon Nurse. I didn't have to say a word, as we both started sprinting—or flying in Ducklett's case—towards the screaming voice.
We ran until I found the scene unfold in front of Patrat's Pizza. A group of Team Miasma grunts pushed their way into the restaurant shoving a little girl down to the ground. Her knee started bleeding immediately. I growled. As I opened the box to find some gauze inside.
Except there wasn't any gauze to be found.
Instead, it was a white suit with a white feathery mask. I closed it to see the return address. My eyes widened in response. The outfit came all the way from Kalos from a woman named Valerie. I looked up, and around, finding an empty alley way not far from here. Call me crazy, but I couldn't think of anything else to do.
Maybe part of it had to do with learning about my past. I don't know, but Braviary Man, or Rudi, wasn't here. Just moments ago, I saw him fighting crime as Braviary Man up in Anville Town. Even on his Pokémon, he wouldn't be able to make it here on time. It looks like he needed a substitute for a moment.
I threw the outfit on, feeling different. This wasn't a typical outfit I've seen any superhero wear. It consisted of a white cloak that had long sleeves and a hood to hide my hair. To make sure, I still tied my hair back and switched my glasses with the mask. I wasn't completely blind, but it was hard seeing things farther away. Underneath the outfit, I wore a tight, blue suit that cling to every curve of my body.
Ducklett looked back at me, looking a bit surprised.
"What else can we do?" I asked, as I shoved my nursing clothes back in the box and shoved it behind a garbage can. "Nurse Joy will understand, I'm sure."
The Ducklett nodded her head before we sprinted out of the alley way. People gave us weird looks, including the small girl who fell down. Her back was pinned back to the wall, as she grabbed her knee in agony.
She needed help. Before I could go in and stop Team Miasma from doing whatever they were doing with Patrat's Pizza, I had to help this little girl. The girl was no older than eight, with tears streaming down her face.
Bending down, I placed my hand on her shoulder. This scared the girl, as she looked up at me in fear.
"It's going to be alright," I promised. "Just a scrape. Once I stop these bad guys, I'm getting you to the hospital, alright?"
The girl nodded her head, as she wiped away her tears. I smiled before standing up and busting through the doors of the pizza place.
As expected, Team Miasma was running around the place, letting their Grimer of purple and green, Wheezing, and Trubish run all over the place. These Pokémon were making sure the place smelled horrendous and unbreathable. Had it not been for the mask that covered my entire face, I would've passed out like to costumers who's pizza was now too rotten to eat.
"Ducklett, use Gust," I whispered.
My Pokémon flapped her wings, forcing the smell to go in the back. We just needed to make sure we kept the smell back and Team Miasma distracted, so these customers could get out of here.
As the wind blew the smell away, the grunts heads popped up. There were five grunts, all wearing masks as they knew what they were doing. Each and every one of them grabbed their Poké Balls, ready to throw another Pokémon into battle.
Someone clapped behind me. As this happened, each and every one of the members straightened up. I wish I could say this was Braviary Man behind me, but he didn't seem like the kind of person to clap at my stupidity. I turned around to see a woman with long purple hair that fell down to her back. She wore a black dress, one of which was held up by a single strap and fell to the ground. It didn't allow much room for movement, but she still seemed intimidating.
"Well, what do we have here," she observed, in a high squeaky voice I wasn't expecting at all. "Another copycat superhero. Wonder how you'll die. You know how the original Swanna died?"
"Who are you, and what do you want?" I growled.
"Oh, so you don't know who I am, well, let me introduce myself. I'm Lantana, one of four Admins of Team Miasma. But that's more than you need to know," the purple haired woman explained.
"You didn't answer my question," I growled again. "What do you want here? Team Miasma has no business here in Nacrene City."
"So we don't, do we?" she asked. "Well, seeing as you're already poisoning yourself with these lies, I think it's time I educate you some, Swanna wannabe."
Lantana pulled out a Poké Ball from the hidden pocket of her dress. Even without my glasses on, seeing as she was mostly a blurry anyways, I could tell this Pokémon was tough as the Poké Ball was black and yellow. After all, Ultra Balls are hard to come by, and when found, they are very pricy.
Seeing how her dress looked like an evening gown, even when I couldn't see every outline of it, I highly doubted price was an issue.
The woman threw out the Pokémon, revealing a non-Unova native Pokémon. It wasn't one I've ever seen before, but one thing was for sure as it floated in the air. This Pokémon was a ghost type, which was odd knowing that every Pokémon used by Team Miasma were usually dark and poison type Pokémon. The unknown Pokémon appeared to be wearing a witches hat, but being that the Pokémon was a purple blur, I couldn't tell if that was a part of the Pokémon, or if the woman really liked Halloween.
It wasn't even close to Halloween.
"Mismagius," Lantana said, "let's teach this Swanna wannabe a lesson and use Dark Pulse."
"Block it with Hydro Pump," I recalled the move Ducklett learned the other day.
The two Pokémon sent their attacks. A black stream clashed into Ducklett's powerful water attack. I saw the moves explode, and with it the ghost Pokémon advancing towards Ducklett.
"Fly up!" I yelled.
We just made it. Ducklett flew up before Mismagius could collide into her with some sort of attack.
"Now, Aerial Ace!" I yelled.
"Use Thunderbolt," Lantana said.
What? A Mismagius can learn Thunderbolt? I didn't have time to pull Ducklett from the battle as she was charging into the opponent. My eyes widened as Mismagius waited until after Ducklett's attack to use the electric attack.
Electric-types were super effective against Flying and Water-type Pokémon. Seeing that my poor Ducklett was both, she was screwed. She fell to the ground, and struggled to get up.
"Too easy," Lantana smirked. "Now, you might as well run away like the rest of the people here. You're running out of time."
I clenched my jaw, trying to think of some sort of comeback, but nothing came. In the corner of my eyes, I could see those who were passed out running out of here as well as they could. At least they could get out because I wasn't leaving until everyone was safe.
"Never. You might have defeated my Pokémon, but I won't stop fighting until Team Miasma is gone."
Just like that, a glow beamed in front of me. I still couldn't see the best, but I knew it was coming from Ducklett, or, should I say, my Pokémon for that matter. Her body elongated and her feathers melted from blue to white. I might be blind, but when the light was gone, my little Ducklett that I had helped raise from her injury not too long ago was now a fully evolved Swanna.
Lantana froze, unable to comprehend what happened. She couldn't believe Ducklett didn't faint, but evolved instead. This was my chance.
"Now, use Hydro Pump!" I yelled.
Swanna flew up and used the attack on Mismagius, forcing the Ghost-type Pokémon to fly back right into it's Trainer. Lantana fell on her butt, and grabbed her Poké Ball to return her Pokémon.
She glared at me as two members of Team Miasma helped her to her feet. None of them said a word as they escorted her out of the building. One thing was for certain. Lantana was beyond angry to lose to a new superhero.
Once she and the two grunts were gone, I turned around to see the remaining three grunts standing there, shaking. Their Pokémon all looked at me wide eyed.
"Who wants to be next?" I asked.
Just like that, the Pokémon and grunts scrambled out of the building to get out of there. Once gone, I let out a breath of relief.
Swanna flew beside me. I took out her Poké Ball and returned her inside, keeping her safe. She did a great job, better than I'd expected her to do. If anyone deserved a break, it was her.
I held her Poké Ball in my hand as I ran outside, seeing the little girl with the scraped knee gone. Someone must've found her and taken her to the hospital. A smile slid to my face. At least Team Miasma was far from Nacrene City.
Author's Note:
It's question time! If you could try any Pokémon-world-based food, what would it be? I would be a sucker for those Lavaridge cookies, because I LOVE cookies...and now I'm hungry.
Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoy and have a fantastic day!
