Swallow the Sun (2023)

Marlowe Aguilar wants to be great or nothing at all. She was named most ambitious for half her life, her parents first, then her teachers, then the students who started to notice how much work she put into everything she did. Failure to her wasn't an option. Marlowe always feels that she has to be the best in everything — in school, in every play, in every activity. She has talent to burn. People refer to her as a songbird. Marlowe's talented enough to do anything and yet sometimes, she feels like it's not enough.

The world's hard on ambitious girls. Their determination scares them. For that, the world often times tells ambitious girls that their dreams are too big. Marlowe's dreams weren't too big. Not to her.

Nobody thinks EJ Caswell has what it takes to make it big in life, so he does everything to prove them wrong. Captain of the water polo team. The male lead in nearly every school play. His grades have gotten better since eight grade. He's also popular, which makes some people not like him. One of those people being Marlowe herself.

EJ lived in a fairytale world with the perfect high school boy vision and his perfect high school girlfriend. He got a reality check when Ricky Bowen came back into the picture, chasing his fairytale relationship with Nini to crumble. EJ was determined to save their relationship while simultaneously trying to get rid of Ricky as the lead of Troy Bolton in the new school musical.

He had only one option: Marlowe Aguilar

Marlowe and Ricky were best friends since childhood. Her and Nini were close friends because of her once relationship with Ricky. Marlowe had seen their relationship build and crumble at the same time. So when EJ tries to get her to help him get the girl, she refuses, because it meant she'd be betraying both of her friends.

Then she agrees, which means she forced to spend time with him, planning on how he could win Nini back. That also meant Marlowe would have to put her focus on something other than being a high achiever. It also meant she'd realize EJ Caswell's not who she thought he was, and that he had insecurities of his own like not being good enough — and maybe, just maybe, EJ would see a different side of her as well.
