CHAPTER THREE, the bite

Back at the hideout, Celia, Gally, Lawrence, Thomas, and the others gather in a room. "No, there's gotta be another way." Thomas argued.

Gally sighs. "Like, what? You saw the building. She is our only way in."

"You really think she's gonna help us?" Thomas asked him.

"I don't plan on asking her permission." Gally replied.

"Am I missing something here?" Brenda interjects, her eyebrows furrowed together with frustration. "This is the same girl who betrayed us, correct? The same d**k?"

Gally points at her. "I like her." Celia chuckled and rolled her eyes.

"What's going on?" Brenda questioned.

Thomas stares forward stubbornly. "What, are you afraid your little girlfriend is gonna get hurt?" Newt speaks up, gaining Thomas' attention. "Hmm?" He raises his eyebrows. "This has obviously never been just about rescuing Minho. Is it?"

Thomas looks at him with confusion. "Newt, what are you talking about?"

"Teresa." Newt clarifies. With hatred in his eyes Celia has never seen before, Newt walks towards Thomas, causing the latter to walk backwards as he stared at Newt with surprise by his sudden outburst. "She's the only reason Minho is missing in the first place. Now we finally have an opportunity to bring her back, and what? You don't want her because of her?" Everyone shares surprised looks, no one expecting Newt to act like this. Thomas was now backed up against the wall, staring at Newt with wide eyes. "Because deep down, you still care for her. Just admit it."

"Newt-"

Newt grabs Thomas' shoulders, pushing him up against the wall with  glare. "Don't lie to me!"

Celia's eyes widen, and worry fills her gaze as she connects the dots. Newt had been bitten by a Crank. Everything made sense now. How he was messing with his arm before they went into the city, how he had felt pain when he started running (which might've just been because his limp, but still it could've also been because of being bitten by a Crank), and now he was acting violent. Acting violent wasn't like Newt.

"Don't lie to me!" Newt demanded.

"Newt," Celia speaks up, walking over to him. He turns away from Thomas, facing her with the intense gaze he still had. "We're gonna save Minho, alright? Just...Just take a breath and calm down, alright?" She nervously said, reaching a hand out to put a comforting hand on his arm.

"Stop it!" Newt orders, grabbing ahold of her wrist before she could touch him. She winces slightly at the tough grip he had which tightens the more he talked, but even though she was in pain she still looks at him with concern and worry because this wasn't the real Newt. "Just stop being so..." His voice trails off as if he's trying to figure out what to say. "You! Stop telling me what to do and stop pretending like you care. It's obvious that you always been pretending to care."

Newt finally let go of her wrist and pushed her away. She stumbled back, not expecting him to push her, and she fell to the ground. He locked eyes with Celia, his heart sinking upon seeing the slightly scared look in her eyes. That was when he realized what he had done. His intense gaze went away, and a regretful looked formed in his eyes. He hated that because he knew he was the cause of her being that way. Thomas could see the hurt in her eyes, and he knew that Newt had gone too far.

"Newt, calm down, alright?" Thomas said softly, trying to calm him down.

"Newt, what the h**l?" Gally's questioned, sending a small glare to Newt as he rushed to Celia's side. He knelt beside Celia, his gaze softening while he looked at her.

As Newt watches the couple as Gally helped Celia up to her feet,  he realized what he had done. He looks at Gally apologetically. "Gally, I didn't mean to hurt her," He replies, his voice shaking. He glances at Celia with a frown. "Celia, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you and I didn't mean anything I said."

"It's okay." Celia reassures him. "I know that wasn't really you."

Gally glares at Newt, upset with him for hurting Celia, but then his expression softened as he saw the desperation in his eyes and saw that he regretted what he did. "You need to back off, Newt," He said firmly. "You're not yourself right now."

Newt hung his head in shame. "I'm sorry," He apologized, his voice barely above a whisper. He glances at everyone with an ashamed expression. "I'm sorry." Holding onto his right wrist with a wince when he felt pain, he then left the room as the others watched with concern. As the others conversed with each other about what just happened and what they should do next, Thomas left the room to go check on Newt.

"Hey," Celia's gaze is brought to her boyfriend when he turned her around to face him. "Let me see your wrist." Gally spoke, looking at her with concern.

"Babe, I'm fine." Celia reassured him, trying to hide the pain she felt as Gally touched her wrist that was forming a bruise.

Gally frowns. "No, you're not. Sweetheart, you're hurt." Celia sighs, her shoulders dropping in defeat since she knows that there's no point in arguing with Gally. "Come on, let's go to the medical room." He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and they walked to the medical room.

Once they were in the medical room, Gally gets an ice pack and hands it to her for her to put it on her bruised wrist. "You'll probably have that bruise for awhile now, but putting ice on it and wrapping it should help it heal faster and the swelling to go away."

"Thanks, Gally." Celia smiles slightly, holding the ice pack on her wrist and wincing slightly at the coldness. She sighs sadly as she thought about Newt getting bitten by a Crank. "I can't believe Newt got bitten. We have to find a cure for him somehow. We can't let him die."

"I know." Gally nods with a solemn look on his face. "Don't worry, we'll find a way to save him and Minho."

****

Thomas eventually followed Newt to the roof of a building in Gally's compound. Celia was worried about Newt. She hated the fact Newt got bitten. She didn't want him to get turned into one of those monsters. She hoped that there was some way that they could save Minho and save Newt. After holding an ice pack on her wrist for a few minutes while she talked with Gally, Gally helped Celia wrap her wrist up.

Celia then said she wanted to go check on Newt so she left to go find him while he went back to the room where the others were at. It had been a frightening and a worrisome experience to see Newt suddenly lash out like that, but she couldn't just not go check on him, not when he was clearly struggling.

Celia eventually found Newt on the roof with Thomas, and she stopped by the entrance of the roof, overhearing that Newt was telling Thomas about how he got his limp. Her heart ached at the memory, and tears brimmed her eyes.

**FLASHBACK**

It was early in the morning, one day in the Glade. Celia had been in the Glade for one month, and she still wasn't used to it. How could you get used to being trapped in a place with no way out? And on top of that, she was with a group of boys. Most times, she didn't mind it while other times she did and just wished she could get out of this place.

Celia didn't have a specific job yet despite being there for a month. She still kept trying different jobs to see which one would be perfect for her, but she just hasn't found the right one yet. Her job she was trying today was being a runner, and it was very tiring, but also exciting and a bit scary being out in the maze. Being a Runner meant she had the job to scope out the maze to try and find an exit. So far she and the other Runners hadn't had any luck and that was disappointing.

Celia was usually teamed up with Newt and Minho, who she has become close with very quickly throughout the month she has been in the Glade. Newt was the Greenie for this month. He has only been in the Glade for a few days, but he quickly found the job that was right for him which made Celia a bit jealous. She wished she could figure it out that easily, but she guessed she wasn't that lucky.

"Where's Newt?" Celia breathed out, bending down as she rested her hands on her knees to catch her breath. She, Minho, and Newt had been heading for the Glade after being done with their run, but they needed a break to catch their breath. Celia was starting to think that maybe being a Runner wasn't for her. It was very tiring and it made her whole body hurt.

Minho breaths heavily, bending down like Celia as he tries to catch his breath. He glances around them, furrowing his eyebrows. "I thought he was with us."

The two teens exchange a surprised glance when they heard a scream. It was Newt screaming and it sounded like he was in pain. Despite the fact neither of them had caught their breath completely and their body were screaming at them to keep taking a break, they immediately broke out into a sprint into the direction they heard Newt.

When they got to Newt, the sight they saw was awful and they didn't know it yet, but it would be a sight that would haunt their dreams. Newt was on the ground, unconscious, his leg caught in vines and it looked like it was broken in three places. Together, they quickly freed Newt's leg from the vines and carried him back to the Glade where they were bombarded by some of the other Gladers once they saw Celia and Minho carried an unconscious Newt with a broken leg. They brought him to the Medjacks and Jeff and Clint immediately got to work.

After what felt like hours, Clint and Jeff finally finished fixing Newt's leg. But it wasn't the same as before. Newt had a permanent limp now, and he would never be able to run like he used to. He felt like he had let everyone down.

When Newt opened his eyes, he was lying on a makeshift bed in the Glade's Medjack hut. Minho and Celia were standing over him, their faces etched with worry.

"What happened?" Newt asked weakly, his voice barely above a whisper.

"You snuck into the maze, and you fell," Minho replies, his voice full of concern. "We found you and brought you back here."

Newt groaned as the memory flooded back. He remembered the fear and desperation that had driven him to sneak into the maze. He just couldn't take it anymore and wanted out of this place.

"I'm sorry," He apologizes, his voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't mean to cause so much trouble."

"Newt, you didn't cause any trouble," Minho said, his voice firm. "We're just glad you're okay."

Celia nodded in agreement, smiling softly at Newt. "Yeah, you mean thr world to us. We're all relieved you're okay and you being okay is all that matters." But Newt didn't feel okay. He still felt broken and lost, and the pain in his leg only added to his despair. Newt was left with a limp that would never go away.

"I should have died," He mutters, avoiding everyone's gaze with sad eyes. "I shouldn't be here 'cause now I'm just a burden."

Celia frowns, tears building up in her eyes. She hated seeing Newt like this. The fact that he wanted to did made her heart break. "Newt, you're not a burden.

We love you, Newt. And we'll always be here for you, no matter what."

Newt manages a small smile as he glances at her, grateful for her words. "Thanks, Celia."

**END OF FLASHBACK**

Celia then decided to make her presence known and walked over to the two boys. "Hey." The boys glanced over at her, Thomas sent her a small smile while Newt looked at her with regret.

"I'll let you guys talk." Thomas spoke, getting the hint that they probably needed to have a talk. He gave Newt a smile, patting his shoulder before he stood up from a crouching position and walked towards the door. While they walked past each other, Celia and Thoams shared a smile.

As Thomas left, Celia sits beside Newt on the ledge of the roof, both of them staring out at the other buildings in Lawrence's compound.

They sat down beside each other on the edge of the roof, looking out at the compound below them. Newt takes a deep breath before he says, "I'm sorry for what I did earlier. I didn't mean to hurt you or say those things to you."

upset and didn't know how to handle it."

"I never wanted to hurt you, Celia. You mean a lot to me," Newt admitted, his voice cracking with emotion.

Celia smiles softly and nods in agreement. "You mean a lot to me too, Newt. You're like a brother to me."

Newt returns the soft smile. "And youre like a sister to me." He glances down at his right arm, sighing a bit. He lifts up up the sleeve of his jacket, revealing a nasty bite mark which made Celia gasp. "No sense of trying to hide this from you anymore."

'How did you even get bitten?" Celia frowned.

"After we escaped WICKED, we were in the desert and found an abandoned mall that happened to have a lot of cranks in there." Newt sighs heavily. "And on our way out, I got bit. I don't know how much time I have left, Celia." He looks at her worriedly. "I don't want to turn into a Crank."

"I don't want you to either. None of us do." Celia said, feeling tears prick her eyes. "We'll find a way to cure you, Newt. I promise. We won't give up on you or Minho."

While Newt pulled down the sleeve of his jacket fo cover the bite, they sat in comfortable silence for a few moments, staring out at the buildings in the compound. Celia scooted closer to him and leaned her head on Newt's shoulder, and he put his arm around her shoulders, leaning his head on hers. They may have been stuck in a maze, but they had each other. And for now, that was enough.
