Just Breathe

Day 14 of Month 6 of Year 3040

When I woke up today, I immediately began to panic. I had forgotten where I was, what I was doing here. I went back to the long days of hard labor where I had to get up as soon as the clock struck 5. I was cold, hungry, and scared, because this wasn't familiar. Were was I? What was I doing here? Did I get taken away, did I fail at my tasks? I had only ever heard rumors of what happened to those who were stolen away in the night. Was it this? A white room with a bed and some furnishings? Did they have a better life? As I began to fully awaken, I realized where I was. I tried to calm my racing heart, and to steady my breathing. I was in the camp... full of people who survived, like me. I was safe here, although I still don't know if I completely believe that. But I do know that I'm safer here than I am out there.
After I calmed myself down some, I tried to stand up. Almost immediately, my legs crumpled beneath me, and I ended up on the floor. I once again struggled to stand, and after some time, I managed to stay standing. I took a couple of slow, cautious steps away from the bed, still swaying on my feet. As I continued to carefully walk around the room, the door opened and a girl came in. I knew I had seen her before, but I couldn't remember where. She looked at me, a wry look on her face.
" 'Ello, Flame," She said, a touch of amusement in her voice, but somewhere, also a deep compassion. "I see you managed to get back on your feet," she continued, before turning to someone standing just outside the door, that I hadn't noticed before. "See, Caeden? I told you she was a fighter."
Caeden walked into the room and looked at me. "Yeah, I get it Cara, you're right once again,"
Cara nodded at his admittance of defeat, her eyes sparkling with barely suppressed amusement. "So, how are you doing?" She asked me, as I tried to walk back to my bed.
I slowly made it over to the bed, and sat down with a quiet sigh of relief. "I'm getting better, I think," I said as Cara looked at me calmly. It was a bit unnerving, I thought, to have this feeling of complete safety, when I knew I wasn't safe. Cara seemed to be perfectly at ease here, and it was odd, to say the least. I didn't expect this. I was expecting only a little, maybe some food, and a warm place to sleep, but instead they gave me a nice room, and everyone so far seemed nice. Was this real? Or was this some sort of trap, getting me comfortable, and then putting me out into the world?

As wary as I was, I couldn't help but trust that I would be safe here, at least until I had recovered some. They could have killed me at any point while I was asleep. They chose to let me live, for a little while at least.

Suddenly, I couldn't breathe. I was scared. Cara had moved closer to me and was explaining things, but I couldn't listen. I felt the heat on my skin rising, and dimly heard Cara say "Caeden, calm her down, now!"

I felt a cool hand hovering just above my skin, and saw flames surrounding it. I tried to stop him, but he kept his hand there, sending waves of water around my skin. I was surrounded by water, but I couldn't do anything except let myself burn and burn...

"Just breathe, Flame. Just breathe," He said, as he controlled my flames for me. I was helpless here, but that was alright. I let myself go.

I'm writing now, hours after that happened... I'm exhausted again, but somehow calmer. I'll write more when I've recovered completely. Goodnight.
