Chapter 3
Leaves trembling in the breeze making the forest seam alive. The undergrowth swaying as if dancing to a melody.
As the sun traveled down, the two wolves traveled as far away from Night Pack as they could.
They stopped to make camp in a shallow dugout in the roots of a pine tree. Sapphire went to hunt and she left Eclipse to find moss.
Eclipse traveled silently in the opposite of Sapphire to find moss. Birds, saying their 'goodbye' to the day, sand their songs with joy.
A big bolder-sized rock came onto view. Through the middle was a large crack with a tall pine grown through it. A large wad of moss was growing in in the crack near the base. Eclipse gathered what she could and returned to camp.
Shuffling made her freeze. Eclipse looked over to her left. There was a large bushy plant between two small birch trees.
She dropped her moss wad and spoke, "hello? Whose there?"
The only response was a tiny waver of leaves Eclipse stepped closer and sniffed. Wolf!
"hello?" She repeated.
The bush shuddered and a small white wolf with grey markings ran out and away from her in fear.
"It's ok! I won't hurt you!" But the wolf didn't seem to notice and kept running.
Eclipse picked up her moss ball and continued toward the camp.
"Were have you been?" Sapphire jumped up when she saw her and complained, "I was so worried!"
It was near dark when Eclipse returned, "My leg was sore. I had to slow down,"
Sapphire took the moss away from her and started to make bedding. When she was done she said, "Rest your leg."
Eclipse didn't protest. She padded over to the nearest bedding and laid down.
Sapphire gave her a small rabbit and kept one for herself and sat down, tearing into the flesh.
Eclipse sunk her teeth into the belly. Feeling the flash travel to her stomach, Eclipse felt revived. She realized how hungry she was, and ate faster.
When it was gone, her full belly making her feel warm, she snuggled up and watched the sky darken to night.
"Why were you alone?" Sapphire asked.
Eclipse looked at her, "Why are you alone," She avoided the question.
Sapphire took a deep breath, "My parents were killed by Night Pack. They were protecting my brother and I," She paused and looked into the undergrowth, "My brother was convinced that the only way to survive, was to join Night Pack. I didn't think he would, but one night I woke up and he was gone," Sapphire looked back to Eclipse, " That's when i found you the first time. I was looking for him and found you."
She laid her head down and said, "That's why I didn't kill him."
Eclipse looked at her with sympathy, "When I was small, I was an only pup, and we were passing through. After we left the territory they jumped us. I ran away and hid..." She looked out into the distance like it was replaying far away.
"Well, we aren't alone anymore," Sapphire snapped her out of her trance.
Eclipse laid down her head and closed her eyes, "No, I guess were not."
Eclipse was mad, at Night Pack, for killing her family, killing her friend's parents and brain-washing her brother.
'If some loners banded together, we might get rid of Night Pack,' She thought.
"Are you ok?" Sapphire asked, as they walked toward the rising sun.
"Do you think we could do it?" Eclipse asked, still lost in her thoughts, "Do you think we could overthrow Night Pack?"
Sapphire shook her head, "No. No i don't think we could do it."
Eclipse was momentary discouraged, rustling made them both stop. Out of the bushes came the white wolf with grey markings she saw the day before.
"I'm Birch and I would be happy to help you get rid of Night Pack."
