Chapter fourteen
Bryce entered the kitchen of one of the houses to find Cas and Carol in the kitchen, she was examining his back, whilst he kept the baby company.
"We made cookies if you want one." Carol said, before frowning at Cas. "You have shards of glass in there, I can take them out." Cas just nodded, feeding Judith carefully.
Bryce took one and sat down beside her, watching her cut open the old scar frowning. "Can you hold that open?" Bryce nodded and pressed his fingers to Cas's back, applying pressure to hold the cut open. Carol began to pull the shards of glass out of the cut. "How'd you get this one?"
"I dunno, last thing I remember my momma was shouting at me and then I woke up covered in glass, outside in the front lawn." Cas replied he didn't seem too bothered about it.
"Why was your mom yelling at you?" Bryce asked, blood pooling onto his hand.
"I got suspended." Cas replied, wincing.
"I'm almost done." Carol told him.
"Where did the glass come from?" Bryce asked gently. Cas shrugged.
"Um... The window was broken I think." He frowned. "Why?"
"Cas did your mom push you through the window?" Bryce asked.
"I deserved it Bryce." Cas replied. Bryce shook his head.
"Cas why did you get suspended?" He questioned gently.
"They were bullying my brother. I couldn't let them hurt him." Cas replied, shaking his head. "I didn't care that they beat me, he was safe."
"All done." Carol told him, she couldn't stitch it up, so she bandaged it instead. The she moved into the next one. The remnants of cuts littered Cas' back, and it made Bryce uneasy. He didn't like how Cas acted as though it was normal. He took a bite of his cookie and was suddenly speechless.
"Carol this is amazing!" He exclaimed. She laughed.
"It was Cas' recipe." She replied, examining a jagged scar with a frown. "One this old should have healed."
"It got infected." Cas replied. "Went all... You know."
"Did no one help you?" Bryce asked.
"My brother, but he didn't actually know anything about this sort of thing." Cas replied, "I thought they'd be fine by now."
"The rest are okay, but take it easy, you need to heal." She told him. "Now will you told me where you got the recipe?"
Cas laughed. "I told you, I read it somewhere."
"And you remembered it?" Bryce frowned. Cas nodded.
"Sometimes I remember useless things like that." He replied, then he frowned. "Forget most other things though." He added cheerily.
"Like what?" Bryce asked curiously. Cas shrugged, rubbing a small cut on his thumb.
"What my family looks like." He replied, "Sometimes what I look like."
"What you look like?" Bryce laughed, although he had a suspicion that he meant something slightly different by the comment. He had a suspicion Cas meant remembering who he was.
"I mean this face isn't really memorable." Cas laughed, shaking his head.
"Depends who you ask." Carol rubbed the boys back. "Go on, Deana still wants to see you."
Cas sighed and left, Carol watching him with a small smile. "He reminds me of my Sophia sometimes, so scared but trying so hard not to show it."
"Scared?" Bryce asked, feeling as though he spent all his time asking questions, Carol just nodded.
"I'm making Casserole, want to help?" She asked, Bryce shook his head and left the house, almost walking into Carl as he made his way onto the street.
"Bryce is Cas okay?" The younger boy asked, causing the older to frown.
"I think so why?"
"I just saw him climbing the fence." Carl replied, Bryce was ready to run toward the gate, when Carl stopped him. "He's not alone."
"What?" Bryce froze, Cas was only beginning to be comfortable around there group? Who on earth could he be with?
"That girl who came yesterday, he went with her." Carl replied. Bryce sighed, he didn't like this.
"Jesus Christ he's such an idiot."
"Bryce you're not his keeper, you don't have to follow his every move." Carl pointed out, Bryce shrugged.
"We're friends . Besides for all the shownhe puts on, he has no idea about people, the moment he lets hid guard down he could be manipulated so easily. I'm trying to help him be a bit more... normal I guess." Bryce explained to Carl, who shook his head.
"Cas is pretty cool, I was just asking because he looked like he was crying." Carl said. "He doesn't need help, he needs a family."
"Everyone hates him." Bryce pointed out, Carl sighed.
"Not as much as he thinks." The younger boy said. "You're his friend, and he wants to find his brother. So you should help him. Besides, we need him, he knows things about the walkers that no one else does."
"What are you saying?"
"Go have fun, he can handle himself." With that Carl patted his shoulder and walked on.
Bruce sighed, Carl was right, he needed to stop being so protective over his friend. He needed to worry about himself as well. He jumped as someone appeared behind him, it was Eugene.
"Bryce I need your help." He said, Bryce frowned.
"With what?"
"I need to go outside." Bryce sighed, of course it wouldn't be easy. Of course Eugene would want that.
"I don't think I'm the best person to help you." Bryce replied.
"You're the only person who can." Eugene said, Bryce sighed.
"Fine, fine." He shook his head, Eugene passed him a knife and a gun that he had obviously taken from the armoury and they headed to the gate, slipping out and into the woods.
"What exactly do you need?" Bryce asked.
"A body." Eugene answered. "I want to research these things."
"You want to study a walker!" Bryce couldn't believe it, he couldn't catch a break today.
"That is what I said yes." Eugene nodded, he was so sure of himself and so lacking in confidence at the same time.
"Great." Bryce sighed. As if on cue, a walker stumbled towards them, he took out his gun and shot. He missed by an inch. It got kept on going. He shot again, and got closer, hitting it in the chest, it was almost on top of him, he pulled out his knife and gave it one last try. It hit the ground with his knife embedded in its skull. He stared at it in intense surprise.
"I- I did it." He muttered, staring at the body. "I did it."
"Help me bring it in." Eugene instructed, Bryce sighed, but did so, this was going to be hard to explain.
