chapter fifteen

Bryce had left Eugene with the walker they had caught and headed up to the room he shared with Cas and found the boy lying on his bed asleep. He laughed, remembering Cas' reaction to the luxury mattress on their first night in their room. He had been surprised and immediately began jumping up and down on it like a child.

"Cas! Wake up!" Bryce shook his shoulder, Cas woke up with a jolt, clutching his gun in one hand.

"What?" Cas looked startled. "Are the fences down?"

"No, but if you sleep now you won't sleep at night. I mean you don't anyway, but-" Bryce stopped.

"I hear them. I always hear them, no matter where I am." Cas sighed. "It's worse at night."

"What exactly do you hear?" Bryce asked as he sat down beside the boy.

"The screams of my family telling me to run as they're being ripped apart." Cas replied. "I shouldn't have run, I should have..."

"Cas you were a kid, heck you still are." Cas rolled his eyes at this comment.

"Wow cause you're so much older than me." Cas smiled weakly, it was more emotion than he had shown in a long time.

"I'm an adult and you're not." Bryce replied. "Where did you go yesterday?"

"What are you? The police?" Cas snorted. "I went out."

"You're not supposed to leave." Bryce pointed out.

"Bryce get off my case, go live your life." Cas told him, Bryce sighed, he wasn't good at making new friends.

"I'm worried about you, sometimes it seems like you've lost you're humanity, other times you seem scared." Bryce told him. Cas was his only friend. He didn't do people and he hated losing the people he had.

"I'm fine. We're just different is all." Cas shrugged. "It's just how it is."

"Cas you're my only friend, I don't know how to talk to others properly." Bryce confessed.

"You should meet Hattie, she's real cool."

"Hattie?" Bryce frowned.

"We met yesterday." Cas explained. "She's new."

"And you're suddenly very easy to talk to?" Bryce frowned, Cas was spiky around new people, like a conker, or a hedgehog.

"She talked to me first." He answered. Then he grinned. "You should come with us next time."

"Where exactly?" Bryce wasn't sure what was going on to be honest.

"Outside." Cas replied. "Beyond the wall."

"Are you crazy? You could die!" Bryce said.

Cas shrugged. "We could all die at any moment, I don't think that's really the issue here." He got up, "besides, I don't like walls."

"What do you mean?"

"I don't like walls where I can't get out. Where I'm trapped." He explained. "I know there's plenty to do in here, but I don't like the walls."

"I get it, you like your freedom, but you need to tell someone if you're going to go out, just in case anything happens." Bryce told him. "And I'm definitely coming with you next time."

"You should." Cas patted his back. "Do you know what time it is?"

"About four? I'm not sure." Bryce replied. "Why?"

"Daryl wanted to talk to me." He answered, "better go find him. Reckon Carol will know where he is?"

"Probably, yeah." Bryce nodded.

"Brill, I'll see you later." With that he left, leaving Bryce in intense confusion.

Walking downstairs, Bryce found himself face to face with Rick. He wasn't sure what to make of this, Rick scared him. "Do you know why Eugene had locked himself in the garage?"

"Um... no." Bryce replied, trying his best to lie for the man he had helped.

"You're a terrible liar Bryce." Rick said. "Someone said they saw him with a dead walker, I need to know what's going on, it could be dangerous."

"I... I don't know." He said, Rick shook his head.

"Come on, don't mess with me, I've heard you helped him, I just want to make sure you're both safe." Rick was convincing and Bryce knew he couldn't lie anymore.

"I helped him find a walker and kill it so he could study it." He confessed. Rick smiled and patted his shoulder.

"Thanks."

With that Rick left, leaving Bryce alone again, he was beginning to get used to it. He had wanted this so much, but he was so lonely and it hurt. He was beginning to miss the road.

Instead, he went to find Cas, because at least he would have a friend, and as he found the boy, sat on the porch with Daryl, talking about hunting techniques, or rather Daryl was telling Cas how to skin an animal. Deana was Walking across the yard towards them, and as Bryce reached them, so did she. She did not look impressed. "Caspian I need to talk to you in my office." She commanded, Cas' eyes met hers at once, it was a steely look he had not often shown.

"Go to hell."

"I won't ask you again." She said, he did not move, Bryce tapped him on the shoulder, he looked up at him.

"Come on." He said, Cas sighed.

"I don't like her."

"Come on, you said you'd make an effort." Bryce coaxed. Cas sighed and stood up, Bryce going with him. "I'm going with him."

"Fine." Deana led them back to her office and looked at Cas critically.

Bryce sat off to the side, watching the icy look Deana was giving the boy.

"What?" Cas asked. He was making somewhat of an effort. Although, he had yet to use the shower, and both Carol and Bryce had tried convincing him, he was still wary about it.

"Where's Edmund?" Deana asked, getting straight to the point, Cas didn't react, as though he had been warned about it.

"Who?" Bryce hadn't expected Cas to answer that way.

"Don't be stupid Caspian, where's your brother?" She asked sharply.

"I don't know. I haven't seen him for five years." Cas replied. "Why?"

"I'm concerned what you'd be willing to risk to find him." She answered. "Your knowledge of what's out there is astounding, and we need you here, to protect this place. Rick asked you to stay with your group for a reason. I'm asking the same."

"You're asking me to stop looking for my brother?" Cas frowned, glancing at Bryce, who frowned back.

"I'm asking you to be a part of this." Deana said. "We were sad when Edmund left, I got so wound up in the hope that we'd be able to find him that I took it out on you."

"What about my brother?" Cas asked.

"We will look for him, but together." She replied. "Now do you want to know what job I have for you? I have one for Bryce as well."

"What exactly do you want?" Cas asked.

"I want a perimeter patrol, and that's what I want the two of you and Harriet to do." She replied. "I've already spoken to her. Do you accept."

"Okay." Cas agreed, but I want my weapons on me, always."

"One gun inside the walls." Deana bargained.

Cas nodded. "Deal."

"I'll do it, but I'm not great at taking walkers down." Bryce said.

"There's nothing gained if there is nothing learned." Deana told him, smiling.

"What exactly do you think will happen to this place?" Cas asked.

"Don't start." Bryce sighed, Deana smiled, taking him by surprise.

"This is our survival." She replied.

"With more than half your people unable to defend themselves? Right."
