Mark's pov
I looked out over the ash covered ground, surrounded by fresh green grass and tall trees. A gentle breeze caused blades of grass to dance slowly and leaves whistled and clapped a soft beat. Birds sung a heart warming songs from high above me as I stared at nothing in particular.

Quiet footsteps approached from behind me and disturbed the peaceful atmosphere. I already knew who the footsteps belonged to and refused to turn and face them, trying to control the anger and hatred that slowly built up inside me.

"Mark," their calm voice came, soft and quiet yet sounding like a siren to me. I didn't respond.

"It wasn't my fault Mark," they said, knowing what was swirling around in my head.

"You shouldn't have let him go then," I said bitterly.

"He wanted to go. We needed those medical supplies anyway and no one else was there," their voice rose in volume and the calmness didn't seem to come through.

"We could have waited. We didn't need them straight away. I could've gone as well," I said, letting my anger show with each word.

"You had brought back three complete strangers that we didn't know if we could trust or not. If you had gone then the base could have been attacked from the inside," the voice almost shouted, a deep breath calming them down. "You were needed here."

"There was enough people here! I could have gone to protect him!" I shouted, standing up and facing the person who I'd been speaking with. A long silence dragged out as a strong gust of wind ruffled our hair and the leaves shook in fear.

"Felix is infected," Russ said blankly.

"W-what? No, he's immune," I said in disbelief.

"He was. But his body has been infected too much. He's slowly turning; slower than everyone else but surely turning. He has a day until he turns. Cry not even make it because he's so weak. You're not the only one loosing someone close," Russ said, tears slowly running down his face.

"I didn't know..," I said, trailing off as guilt built up inside me.

"No," Russ said, confusing me. "You didn't know because you were too busy blaming everyone else about Jack that you didn't look to see what was right in front of you."

Russ' words echoed around my head. The wind hand completely stopped now, the birds falling silent as the world around me seemed to die. The smell of ash flew all around me from the stuff I'd burnt, not wanting it around as a memory.

"I know you're upset about Jack, I understand that but stop taking it out on everyone else. We've all suffered loss. You were there for Jack when he didn't want you and that's when he needed you the most, not when he got infected. You know what he told me once?" Russ spoke softly, creating a calm aroma around him while mine remained dark and lonely.

"What?" I asked, my voice shaking.

"That he didn't care how or when he died, as long as he wasn't one of them and as long as you were by his side when he went. Then he would be happy," Russ said, making tears fall down my face.

"He didn't care about dieing. He didn't care about all the monsters around him or the danger. He cared about being with you. He cared about you. I heard his last words and heard the truth in them. He loved and wanted you to push through this. He wanted you to survive. This isn't surviving," Russ said.

I looked down in shame as Russ walked away, heading back towards the entrance. I watched as the grass moved around my feet as the wind picked up again, the blades dance slow and sad now and the leaves only softly singing words I didn't understand. I looked up at the overturned soil and at the flowers that rested on top.

I slowly walked over and looked at the long chain that lay across the grave; at all the items strung upon it. A small dog paw from Russ. A gold cookie from Red. Several different gemstones that represented luck and peace from some of the others. But what stood out the most to me was the red and green heart shaped pendant I'd left.

I smiled, silently appolagising to Jack for betraying his words. He'd told me not to mourn on him and I did. The worst part was that I blamed everyone else for something that couldn't have been helped. We really did need those supplies.

A gunshot inside the walls made me jump and become alert. I took one last glance at Jack's grave before racing to the entrance gate. I already knew where the gunshot had come from and ran straight to the familiar building I'd visited so often.

I burst through the door and was met with a whole lot of chaos and commotion. Red was in tears and Russ was trying to calm her down so she wouldn't do any damage to her or the baby. Scott and Snake were standing in the doorway to Cry's room.

I ran forward and managed to push inside and gasp at the sight. Cry was hunched over with Felix's lifeless body in his arms, tears falling down his red face. Felix's skin was a pale green and dark coloured blood spilled out of his mouth. Redish green scratches covered his neck as blood slowly seeped out of each one.

"What happened?!" Scott asked for me, making Cry look up. His crystal blue eyes were full of heartbreak at fear.

"He.. h-he turned," Cry spluttered out through sobs. Everyone gasped and I turned back to look at Russ.

"I thought you said he had a day?" I asked, scared and confused.

"I thought he did too. He didn't seem that far gone this morning," Russ defended, Red slowly seeming to calm down.

"I'm s-sorry F-Felix. I didn't m-mean to. I-I was scared. I-I didn't kn-now it w-was y-you," Cry sobbed out. Ken rushed in past me and tried to comfort his friend but tears were also running down his face as we looked at the last person we'd thought would turn. How did everything go so wrong so fast?
