Chapter VII

We stood on a hill top over looking Chicago. James looked through a pair of binoculars, letting out a grunt. "The cities overrun with those bastards." He said.

He offered me the binoculars and I peered through them, seeing thousands of the undead wandering through the streets, no clear path in sight. Shit.

I handed them back before walking over to the car, leaning against the hood.

"What're you thinking?" Mackenzie asked.

I let out a sigh. "I'm thinking it's a suicide mission."

"I second that." Brock said, walking up to us, James and Samantha close behind.

"There's no way in hell we can make it through all of them." Samantha added.

"We have to try. This could be our only chance to stop this thing once and for all." Mackenzie said.

I looked from Mackenzie to the rest of the group, then over to Laila. "What do you think?"

Laila looked up at me. "If I can really solve all this, then I wanna try."

James turned to the rest of the group. "I agree with the girl. I'm not going to ask any of you to lay down your lives for them, but I'm going in."

Brock stood tall. "You know I'm in, LT."

Samantha shrugged. "I got nothing else better to do."

"Let's put an end to this." I added.

"Uh, hold up, don't I get a say in this?" Arthur asked, suddenly joining the group.

"Sure, you can come with us or stay here on your own." James said.

Arthur folded his arms over his chest. "Fine, whatever."

So, it was decided. We were going in...

The sounds of the undead filled my ears as we approached the city, the Humvee in front of us.

Fear started to build in my gut and I took Mackenzie's hand in mine. "Whatever happens... I'm happy I met you guys."

She gave me hand a squeeze and Laila rested her hand on my shoulder.

I gave them a nod before grabbing the shotgun, the first row of undead only a few feet in front of us now. "Keep your heads down."

The Humvee blew through them, sending blood and body parts flying in every direction.

I cut the wheel, swerving around a big group.

The skyscrapers loomed over us as we entered the city, dodging burned out cars and building debris.

"Stay on our ass." I heard James' voice through the walkie talkie he gave me.

I stayed close to the Humvee, a rain of body parts flying over the car.

Mackenzie took Laila's hand. "We're gonna be ok."

Suddenly, the Humvee came to a halt, I hit the brakes, but our car still clipped the back of them.

"Shit, there's to many of them." James said through the walkie talkie.

I looked out the windshield, seeing hordes of the undead surround our vehicles. "We have to keep moving, they're surrounding us." I said through the walkie talkie.

Decomposed hands bounced off the windows, hungry growls ringing through our ears.

I opened a little hatch on my window and stuck the barrel of the shotgun through it. "Cover your ears." Then, I pulled the trigger, blowing apart the first bastards head.

I pumped the shotgun and fired again, the sounds of gunfire coming from the Humvee now, rows of undead collapsing to the pavement.

Then, the Humvee took off. I threw the Monte Carlo in gear and slammed on the gas, staying as close to their vehicle as I could.

"We have to get off the streets. There's to many of them." I said through the walkie talkie.

"I see a parking garage, four o'clock." James replied.

I looked to the right, seeing the entrance. "I'm following you."

The Hunvee made a quick right, blasting through a burned out car blocking the driveway. I pulled up behind them as they got out, Samantha and Brock quickly pulling the gate down to block the entrance.

I stepped out, approaching James. He stood in front of the Humvee, smoke billowing out of the hood. "How's it looking?"

"The radiators shot, it's not going anywhere anymore." He replied.

"Great, now we're sitting ducks." Arthur said.

"That gate isn't gonna hold forever." Samantha said.

"We need a distraction." Brock added.

Mackenzie patted the roof of the Monte Carlo. "This thing's pretty loud, someone could drive it the opposite way, lead some of the horde away from us."

"That's a death sentence. Who's gonna volunteer for that?" Arthur asked.

As the group looked amongst itself, I felt my hand start to raise. "I'll do it."

Mackenzie looked over at me. "What?"

I looked into her eyes. "I said, I'll do it."

   "Are you sure?" James asked.

I gave him a stern nod.

Mackenzie stepped in front of m then. "Iris, please. I can't do this without you."

I cupped her cheek, flashing her a little smile. "The lab is only a couple blocks from here. I'll lead those bastards far enough away so you guys can make it. Then, I'll swing around and regroup with you. Piece of cake."

She placed her hand over mine, smiling a little back. "Piece of cake." A single tear ran down her cheek.

I leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to her lips. "I love you, Doc... Stay safe out there."

She sniffled, a few more tears leaking out. "I love you to..."

I looked deep into her eyes, pulling my dog tags off and handing them to her. "I'll be back for these..."

She clutched them in her hand. "They'll be right here, waiting."

After one last smile and kiss, I turned my attention to Laila. "Alright, kid, it's all on your shoulders now. Don't let us down, ok?"

She smiled, a couple tears of her own leaking out. "No pressure, right?"

I chuckled, pulling her into a quick hug. "Good luck."

Then, I turned to the rest of the group. "You guys have any explosives?"

Samantha opened the trunk of the Humvee, pulling out a few blocks of C4 and a couple detonators. "Right here."

I took them, setting them on the hood of the Monte Carlo. "I'm gonna need a big ass gun to."

Brock stepped forward, handing me his. "Standard issue M4, not much. But, the grenade launcher should offer plenty of bang."

I checked the gun before nodding to him.

James stood in front of me then. "Good luck, soldier."

"Just get these people to the lab." I replied.

He gave me a salute, which I returned.

Then, after giving everyone one last look, I loaded up the car and started it up.

Brock and Samantha pulled open the gate and I gave the car of few revs before taking off into the horde...
