Chapter 5: Cameron

Colors are a very strange thing. You can say colorless, but you can't actually know what colorless looks like. We just know.

Like those colorless knowledge, I knew what it was like to be respected. But now I saw the colorless, I know about being respected truly.

When Luna and Harley comments, 'Good job' my world flipped upside down. The meaning of being trusted carved in my memory making an deeper scratch than before. It wasn't like I was never trusted, mom trusted me to carry the main dish, dad trusted me to wash the car right, Melody trusted me to do a very harsh piggy back ride. The two friends I met only few days ago's 'trust' felt very special.

We traveled up the mountain. Luna's keen eyes wandered everywhere not missing a slight abstract of each rock. Her eyes lurked like a tiger trying to find it's prey, glimmering thinking about it, And it really does look like a tiger with her bloodshot harsh eyes. It was still unbelievable that she was younger than me.

I heard a small rustle from distance turning my head. I saw only the snow that was pure white and some spots of grey of rocks. My friends haven't seem to hear it. I turned my head back where the rustle came but saw nothing, telling myself it was just a mishearing.

"Shouldn't we go hunting Lulu?" Harley stopped panting with white puff of smoke evaporating to the sky. The stubborn seven year old shook her head eyes focusing somewhere else and her mind in a different place.

"No, I need to find the bird." Luna didn't say we. Was it just me or did she have something else in her mind except for childish dream of seeing a mythical bird?

I decided to let Harley do the talking. "But we will starve to death. Let's just gather for half an hour okay?" He said calmly his sunshine smile on, warming the freezing place like a small bonfire. I only nodded like I always did.

I was never popular, or hated, or not popular. It is true that I have sticked with some popular boys but all I did was nodding agreements even though I had a different opinion. My personality was normal, not an outstanding star shining so brightly that the moon loses the beauty competition. I was a small twinkle in the midnight sky, fitting in with the other stars.

But Luna was different. Her blood was royal passed in to her as princess, the only princess in Bellicor. She would become an queen someday, since she does not have any sibling from what I heard. In school she would be popular holding the tittle of princess, a tittle that attracts people like a magnet.

I leaned to Harley's ear and whispered, "Are you sure there is such a thing called Ancient Bird?" I asked glancing at the dangerous princess few times. He responded,

"I can't be sure. But we can not let Lulu down." Harley said nervously. This boy was a clump of good, caring for her no matter what she was. "Anyway," He said. "When is your Trial of Death going to be held? Mine and Lulu's is January 14th."

January 14th. Was this some kind of joke? Did Harley over heard the conversation with the Shadow Hunter? I stared in shock, my eyes clouded with sadness.

"January 14th." I answered bitterly. If what he said was true, than that means at least one of them will die. Possibly kill each other. Harley seemed shock too his eyes getting watery, but was in the edge of crying. I bit my lips. Was this just unlucky or was it purposely done?

"I can't believe it." Harley trembled. "We have to escape this island." He stated. There was silence, chill blew in my spine. Each inhale hurts, not just because of the dry air, there was emotional pain.

"Harley! Cameron!" Luna broke the silence with her hiss. "We're gathering thirty minutes remember? I'll go this way, you guys do whatever to get food." She said stomping at the left side of the mountain. I nodded to Harley and headed where several trees grew. My new friend nodded back and headed the other way.

Although the place was cold, trees still grew standing firmly reaching for the bare sunlight. Snow glimmered by the sun ray sparkling like glitter. The place was silent, dead silent. There was an tree that grew small red berries. I jumped and swiftly climbed the tree picking a berry off the twig. Though I could not identify what it was, I decided to gather them. One by one I picked the small, blueberry sized fruit, my glove covered hand pinching and plucking it out.

It was an peaceful gathering for few minutes, no screaming and screeching of fighting. But I guess I shouldn't have expected a lot from the Island of Destiny.

"HEEEELP!" A high pitched scream echoed across the silent forest. There was loud stomping foot step coming closer and closer to me. I made my eyes skinny trying to see what was the commotion. I saw a black haired girl, who was heading this way to my tree. With a giant big blob of white following her way.

Panicked, I climbed the tall tree glancing to the monster few times. I quickly reached the top, frightened out of my death. The black haired girl tried to climb a tree close by, but her shaking hands slipped from the branch falling in front of the white monster—a yeti.

The yeti was white and big, it's fur was not snow white like the snow flakes, glossy and dirty. The yeti's nose was big and large puffing big smoke from his nose and mouth. It clenched it's mouth baring teeth making deep low growls that shook me and the girl with fright. The yeti's brown face was scary like a monster you would imagine in a nightmare, while the Asian looking girl looked stared in horror with shaking feet and teeth.

"Please, let me go! I'll do anything to not get eaten!" The human pleaded helplessly hopeless, and the yeti probably does not understand a single thing she was saying. I stared at the monster and the girl my eyes filled with fear. The yeti grunted in a response trying to snatch up the girl. She dodged barely, than drew her sword facing the yeti. It was none of my business; this was how a child of Bllicor known weak dies.

I remembered the first day here, dragon attack. Instead of being burned into ashes, I was saved by someone younger, someone braver and skilled, Luna. She had skills unlike me, but she risked her own guts to save me. Although she is cold and scary, her heart is a survivor who would never leave any life to die. And Harley, whom I met saved by zombies. He had an full smile across his face, but I knew he was scared. I stared at my sword. My hand reached for it. My vocal cords began to vibrate rapidly. My legs pushed from the branch.

I landed on the yeti and sliced my sword across his left hand index finger cutting an nasty cut. The yeti shrieked, and my hands grasping on his thick fur. I sliced the sword in the same spot I done. The index finger of the yeti was chopped off making the monster angry than ever. He threw me off with a might yowl. Snow was a great place to land, but the monster's power was so strong that I hit a tree far from the yeti. Pain stabbed as I yowled. Hot trickling lava of pain ran in my spine. I gasped for air sarcastically, trying to stand again.

The yeti ran towards me giving an monstrous roar it's fist headed to my head. I gave an quick weak blink than closed my eyes, preparing for what was coming ahead.

"Ugh!" An familiar voice grunted. I opened my eyes with caution seeing her, Luna. She battled the yeti fiercely on it's head. Before the yeti can take her off, she stabbed her sword in the yeti's nose hole. It cried in pain, than stumbled on the snow.

Harley came his sword drawn a bit too late to save the day. He saw the dead yeti that had an sword sticking out of it's nose. After wrinkling his eye brows by disguise, he padded forward to me his eyes worried.

"Are you okay Cam?" Harley asked holding my shoulders firmly shaking it a little. I gave an weak smile than pointed to the Asian girl.

"Can you see if she is okay?" I asked. The worried guy hesitated but nodded padding to the frightened girl. She was still shaking, her eyes puffed with tears that was still falling to the snow. Harley gently said something to her and the girl nodded relaxing a bit.

"Good job, I was mistaken about you." Luna smiled, a smile that was for me. Her gaze softened like a gentle princess that sticks out her index finger where bluebirds land and butterflies land on their hair. Not a sunshine smile, a moonlight smile. Gentle, calm, and tender.

"Glad you noticed." I smiled back. "And you and Harley pushed me to do this." Luna wisely responded with words that will never come out from a eight year old.

"Your bravery might have changed a destiny." She said. I stared at the yeti. Would I have left the girl to die if I had not met them? It was frightening to think that way, me abandoning a life to die. I also had an thought of the sword stuck in the nose.

"Are you going to take it out?" I pointed to the sword that was probably covered in yeti boogers. Luna sighed and answered,

"What can I do? My knife won't get me the protection we need." She took it out, and sure enough, it was covered with white boogers. Luna only held the part where it was not stuck inside the nose hold disguise. I shivered than pinched my nose .

Harley came back supporting the girl. He slightly went around Luna disguised by the sword and the stench. "She's okay. Why don't you introduce yourself?" He asked kindly his sunshine smile full, blowing away the freezing cold. The Asian girl nodded relaxing her shoulders that was tensed with fright.

"I'm, I'm Skylar. Um, I came to the Island of Destiny yesterday. And, thank you so much for saving me." Skylar dipped her head deep, eyes still clouded with fear. Perhaps she is remembering about the vicious monster. It was a memory that she will never forget, like me when I was helpless against the dragon.

I walked up to her. "It's okay, I was helpless too at my first day." I said, smiling, a smile that was close to Harley's smile when he told me it was okay. Warm, not big and powerful like his sunshine smile, but warm.

Skylar was about the same height as me. She looked at my gaze than relaxed more, her fear slowly fading away.

"Do you want to come with us?" I asked without thinking. I took pity on myself. Luna, Harley, and I was chosen for the trial in the same day. What if Skylar was chosen and we have to fight each other to death?

Luna did not shout, nor growl, nor spat what in horrible idea it is. She remained silent cleaning the yeti nose waste with snow, digging the sword in and out of the frozen water. Her eyes were unreadable that made me swallow deep in the blue eyes.

"May I?" Skylar asked back, her black eyes glittering with hope. She had big round eyes like a puppy and straight black short hair that was calmed cleanly.

I gave an silent nod to Harley, than glanced at Luna whom she grunted. "Yes, come with us, travel, and let us hope we will survive." I said warmly holding out my hand for a handshake. Instead of giving a good firm handshake, Skylar jumped on me than wrapped her arms around hugging tight. She smelled like fresh blossoms even though she could not possibly have a perfume. Her thick laired coat brushed to mine.

Skylar finally let go of me, she did not look embarrassed; I did. I was blushing so hard that it doesn't feel cold anymore. I glanced at Skylar, she smiled warmly like gazing to a hero. I blushed even more red.

Luna grunted instead of growling. "Giving her too much hopes is not going to help us live. Tell her what I told you, and I mean everything." She said with her sharp blue eyes glaring. I wondered if I will ever see her moonlight smile again.

"Skylar, do not freak out." I sighed staring to her innocent black puppy eyes. I took a deep breath and explained the knowledge that Luna and Harley gave me; Trials of Death, Shadow Hunters, the number of survivors to be eliminated, and King Enzo's unusual teaching invitation. Skylar listened closely, her eyes wise, her mouth asking knowledgeable questions, and her finger tapping on her chin. She was smart, not just the type of girl who flirts around with popular boys.

The Asian girl asked when I was done explaining everything. "Can you tell me your names?" I forgot to introduce myself even though she did. I quickly explained,

"I'm Cameron, you can call me Cam. That's Harley and this girl is Luna, Princess Luna." The princess twitched her eye brow at me giving unreadable signs. Skylar looked puzzled staring at Luna.

"But I thought Princess Luna was seven or something." She asked studying her with her curious pair of eyes. This time Luna answered herself.

"I am. Eight, though. Call me just Luna." She said her eyes remaining sharp. She drew out her knife and started polishing it.

"Luna," I filled Skylar in. "Went here earlier to prove herself to King Enzo." Skylar seemed to understand, King Enzo was like that. Bragging, cares for himself, power hungery, and wants to show off his things, even his own daughter.

"Well!" Harley suddenly said making every one jump. "Let's get going to find the Ancient Bird. Cam, explain to Skylar please." He instructed leading us including Luna. I shrugged to Skylar than explained about the Ancient Bird on the way.Suprisingly, Luna did not say one word.

Our new character Skylar! Yay! And to Luna; what do you guys think of Luna's silence and her desire to find the bird? Just childishness or a special meaning?
