How did this happen?
"Just keep calm," Meixong instructed, their voice firm with reassurance. The wind brushed past them, causing both of them to sway as Meixong kept a firm grip on the girl's harness. "I got you."
Just a few moments earlier, they watched as the first—a counselor—rappelled down the cliff with ease. Then another, and another, nothing should have gone wrong. But it was the way an old lady's hands shook as she tightened one of the camper's harness. It didn't look nearly as tight as it should've been.
One thing led to another, ropes fraying much like Meixong's patience, before they spring to action themself.
Meixong carefully craned their neck towards the sky, the branch they had attached themself to holding strong. Gods, they were too old to be doing reckless things like this. Really? A thin, flimsy wire from a device they didn't even know the name of? It wasn't their best plan, admittingly, but the other ropes were already down the cliff.
"Hey, do you know how to tie a good knot?" Meixong asked almost candidly, ignoring their numbing fingers.
The camper gave them an odd expression. "...Yes?"
"Good. Use the other rope in my pocket and tie it around yourself, then tie the other end to me."
The camper pulled an even odder face. "That's a dog leash."
Meixong prayed to the gods for patience. "Kid, we're hundreds of feet in the air. Do we really need to discuss technicalities?"
Remembering her plight, the camper glanced warily at the ground before reaching up and grabbing at the leash.
"Try not to thrash around so much, please." Meixong really didn't know how much longer they could hold on, circulation quickly being cut off from their fingers and legs, the cords biting into their skin. "Tie it thrice."
Meixong kept their breathing even as the camper did as she was told. Spots began forming around the edges of their vision as the pain became unbearable. The camper was only part way through the second round of knots before Meixong's grip began to slip.
"Wait! I'm not done tying—"
"Listen carefully," Meixong gritted through their teeth. "I'm going to swing you towards the rock, and you are going to grab hold of them."
"But I can't—"
"You will."
Meixong swung their arm as far as they could, the camper shrieking and grabbing their arm in terror. They could feel the branch and cord shifting by the sudden movement. Not far enough that time. They swung again, gaining momentum.
The branch cracked above them.
"Grab the rocks! Now!"
The camper's arms flung out in front of her, too scared to disobey the only command she could hear through her terrified mind. The first didn't hold firm, scrapping her palm as it slipped by, but the second did. She held on for her life.
Meixong fared better from above, finding a good foothold. A good thing, too. The jagged rocks felt like razors on their rubbed-raw hands.
"Investigator!"
Meixong didn't need to look up to know who it was, but they did anyway if only to send Vikki a grateful smile.
"You found more equipment?" Mexiong asked as Vikki lowered herself to them, all decked out in proper gear and an even sturdier rope.
"Yes, Noss and I ran back to grab more supplies. Thank goodness you're both alright!" Vikki quickly attached a rope around them in a makeshift harness, but she froze when she saw Meixong's bloodied hands. "That...doesn't look good. We need to get you down—"
"Get the girl first. I'll live."
Vikki gave them a grim nod, but before she could begin lowering herself to the camper, a shadow came hurling down towards them. The first item glided just beyond them, something fabric.
"What was that—" Meixong swore vehemently as something else hit them in the head, a white streak continuing to unroll and fall to the ground passed them all.
"...Were those trousers and toilet paper?" the camper exclaimed below.
Meixong turned to Vikki. "What are the laws of murder in this world?"
"Strict. It's not favorable to do so."
"Damn."
