Chapter one
I lay in a middle of a vast field with grass that seemed to reach to the stars. The strands of gold tickled my face as if it were real grass and the moon glowed as if it were really the moon. It was silent out, nothing but the wind breaking through my ears as I closed my eyes.
It was peaceful here, no distractions to get me off my mind, no annoying people, no worries. It was perfect, just perfect.
"Player WinglessJay277, other players would like to join your game. Accept or decline?" An automated voice rang out around me, making the virtual reality glitch slightly.
"Decline access." I mumbled, keeping my eyes closed. I didn't want anyone ruining this for me.
"Player WinglessJay277, more players want to join your game. Would you like to decline again?" It rang out again, making me groan.
"Turn off all access lines, please." I said, opening my eyes.
"Affirmative." There was a slight beep after the voice and no more interruption came from the sky.
I smiled and shifted some, closing my eyes as I raced off into my own thought.
It seemed like hours before I was snapped out of my thoughts again but it was only a few minutes.
"You should have let us in Meg!" A automated man's voice rang out over the silent meadow and I sat up abruptly, looking around as if to try and see the source of the voice.
I looked up at the sky, dark clouds now started to swirl around and cover the dark blue blanket with a depressing and spooky grey color. Lightning flashed overhead and rain started to pour down on me. Thunder crashed through the sky, sending vibrations through the ground and up my spin making me shiver. The cold droplets came quicker and quicker till they felt like I was being slapped by a thousand tiny hands all over my body.
I jumped to my feet, blinking the salty water out of my eyes. I looked around at my world, it was shadowy and dark like a scene from a nightmare. What made it worse is that I could spot the glimmers of golden pelts coming towards me each time the Lightning lit the air on fire. My heart rate increased steadily as I backed away from the creatures. Now I could see the glint of their eyes and the black tips of their ears.
Lions! My head screamed as I recognized the big cats stalking me. Wait, they are stalking me! I'm their prey, I'm going to die!
My mind started to race through possible scenarios of my own death, God, why did my mind make me think of my own death! At that moment my thoughts weren't on that it was a virtual reality state and these animals weren't real, no my mind went on instinct mode!
My heart drummed loudly in my ears, blocking out the sound of the rainfall. Run, run now Megan! I screamed to legs that seemed to have frozen in place. I let out a scream and pushed my legs to start running the opposite direction from the hunting beasts that were only yards away now.
I broke into a full on sprint as I slipped and slid on the muddy surface. My black tennis shoes now an ugly brown from the slimy substance that now covered the ground. My hazel eyes were wide in terror as I tried to pick up speed. I could hear the lioness's feet slapping the ground as they raced after me, I could feel their hot, stinky breath on my heels, I could smell the scent that radiated off their pelts.
Their eyes burned into my back as I let out another scream and ran even faster. "Help me!" I bellowed out into the nothingness that surrounded me.
I pushed towards the tree line, aiming to shoot up a tree to escape these predators. As I set my left foot on the ground it sank into the mud, going up to my heels in icky slush. My other foot soon ended in the same fate as my left. I ran straight into a bloody bog! I tugged at my legs frantically to pull them free only to find that each time I did that I sank deeper and deeper into the mud. Soon it was up to my waist and I couldn't move an inch.
I looked behind me and my breath hitched in my throat, a lion stood only feet away. It was in a hunting crouch, eyes glued in my. They were wide with hunger and thrill, gold eyes rushing with such emotions it almost seemed... Real. To real, way to real!
It shook its hind quarters as it prepared for the leap, it looked like a cat playing with a stuffed toy mouse that you would wind up the tail and it would roll around like a real mouse. But right here, right now, I now knew what that toy mouse felt like. Knowing death was just one claw swipe away.
It paused and there came a deafening silence before it pounced, paws outstretched with claws unsheathed and ready to deliver the kill blow.
I took a sharp intake of breath before letting out the loudest scream I could muster. My throat quickly grew raw as I felt teeth and claws sink into my neck and shoulders, more claws scrapped deep into my stomach. I screamed and screamed and reached quickly to pull something off my face.
I could feel cold metal under my fingers and I quickly threw the mask off of me, I heard it clatter onto a hard surface. I was still screaming, I could still sorta feel the lioness's claws and teeth in me. Hot wet tears leaked down my face as I choked out a soft sob.
I opened my eyes and glared at the people around me. I could hear their laughter ringing clear in my ears now even through my fast heart rate.
"You jerks! What the heck did you do that for?" I sniffed profusely, wiping quickly at my blotchy cheeks.
A boy, about fifteen years old stumbled over to me. His arms were wrapped around his stomach as he laughed his lungs out.
"Awe, does poor baby boo need a dipper change!" He cackled.
"Shut up, Fredrick Delenio! This isn't funny!" I snapped, face turning as red as a cherry. God, did I really just embarrass myself in front of my own friends?
