Long distances

Modern AU
~~~~~
The ring of Skype jingled through y/ns ears as she anticipated seeing the lovely smile of her "it's complicated".
The morning sunlight pounded in gently through the window adjacent from her computer desk.
She smiled as his face illuminated the screen.
He sprouted a happy face and gave her an excited hello.
Y/n couldn't help but smile back as she replied to his cheerful greeting.
She had always wondered what made him so happy all the time.
His story wasn't a good one but it never seemed to hinder his day to day.
He would always smile and compliment her when she logged onto her morning call.
Every weekend they'd both get up at the same time and call each other as they ate breakfast.
It seemed to be a little bit of a contest on who could call first.
Louis likes to mention the time she actually jumped out of bed and logged on before she even brushed her hair or anything.
Y/n sat down at the desk with her bowl of cereal and laughed at Louis who was still half asleep.
"You know you have to be awake to hear what I'm saying right?" She laughed as she pulled a face of awe.
Her heart pounded in adoration seeing her lover like that.
"I know, I know. I was just up late last night."
"Please don't tell me you were playing baseball on the wii all night, again."
"Well then I guess I'll just have to shut up."
"Louis!!"
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I was up three and I couldn't quit."
"Louis!" She groaned as she pinched the bridge of her nose.
"I know. It's bad. I really should stop. I just can't."
"Okay. Nevermind that. Tell me what's been going on this week for you."
Y/n dipped her spoon into her cereal and shoveled it into her mouth as Louis went on about his week.
After y/n was done with breakfast Louis made his and listened to y/ns tellings of her week.
"Well it sounds like your week was good!" Louis cheered as he placed his plate in the sink.
"Yeah. It was good."
There was silence between the two.
Y/n looked down and tried to muster up the courage to ask Louis her burning question.
"Hey lou." She started lightly.
"Yeah beauty?"
"What would you do if you got the chance to see me in person?"
"Well, I would probably cry. Probably! And then I'd hold you. And feel really good."
"What if you actually got the chance to? Like seriously." Y/n said in a smooth but stern voice.
"I just told you. Why?"
"Because I'm gonna be taking a flight in a couple days to see you."
Louis's face shifted into a serious but shocked expression.
One that y/n rarely sees.
Her anxiety heightened and she started to freak
"Unless you don't want me to come. I can just replace the ticket."
"NO!! No! Don't do that! I want to see you! Like... really bad."
Y/n started to worry less and a little smile tugged at the ends of her mouth
"You'd like that?"
"Yes!" Louis laughed.
"Cool. Well it's gonna happen."
"I'm so happy right now." Louis said in a soft loving voice.
He knitted his brows in awe as he noticed a blush creeping up on y/ns face.
"I'm happy too." Y/n replied in the same tone.
"Like... I'm actually gonna see you. For realsies!!"
She laughed as tears brimmed her eyes in excitement.
"For realsies." She replied as she nodded her head.
Louis put his hand up to the screen and y/n copied his action.
They didn't know it, but their hands would be touching if they were next to each other
"Then I'll actually be able to touch you. For real this time."
A silent tear fell from y/ns eye and she sniffled.
"That will be the best day of my life." She shook her head as she thought in wonder.
"Okay. Enough of this mushy gushy stuff. You know it gets to me." Louis laughed as he cleared his throat.
"Okay okay. Sorry. I can't help it!"
"Anyway. So how's home life?"
Y/n and Louis talked eventfully for the rest of the morning before they were disturbed by the events of reality.
Louis and y/n both took their moments of relapsed realization that they would soon be hand in hand.
Y/n couldn't wait and Louis was about to jump out of his skin.
They both were unsure of how -or if- it would be different, but they knew they were ready.
Y/n eventually had to say goodbye so she could start her day.
Louis never liked hanging up.
It was too much for him.
He hated saying goodbye and he hated seeing her go.
He hated that he had to stop seeing her and he hated the fact that her face disappeared into a screen of black and blue.
Soon, very soon, -he noted- he'd see her in real life.
And then for a few days, he wouldn't have to see the blue screen and he wouldn't have to say goodbye.
For just a few days, for a few mere moments, they won't be a long distance away.
