Surrender

A tear slid off my cheek.

He slipped his arm over my shoulder as I sipped coffee from my plain white mug. I looked at the night sky, the stars shining down at us. My eyes longed to see her again, I wanted to be in my mother's loving arms, but I wasn't.

Instead, I was with Mason, my boyfriend. He had been there for me a month ago when she died. The Japanese had bombed her area. We were next, no one was safe.

"We have each other," Mason reassured me. "Nothing can go wrong, we just need to stick together."

I nodded my head and deeply sighed. The clock chimed and I looked at it. Through the light of the moon, ten at night could be read. I quickly wiped my tears away.

Mason closed the bedroom window and I placed both our mugs on the tiny wooden table besides our bed.

It wasn't till later on that night, we were woken up with people banging on our door.

"The nearby neighborhood has been attacked, we have to scram!" Our neighbor said. I glanced at Mason with fear. He tried to keep his face straight, but in his eyes, he was panicking.

We quickly took our jackets - which had been hanging by our door - needing at least warmth for the survival that we had to go through. Our neighbors hurried slightly in front of us, holding two of their kids in their arms, and we followed.

Around us were people knocking hard on other's doors, some people just ran for their live, it was chaotic. Mason and I had our hands in each other's, many tried cutting through in order to go faster, but we didn't let go.

Kamikaze planes flew over us, some, without warning, crashed onto the houses that surrounded us. Dead bodies were now lying on the ground, it got more crowded, people started screaming.

Some had died, some had just fainted, a few emergency out of their either stable or burnt down house with injuries.

My heart started to beat even faster, as if it were about to explode like the planes when they crashed. My palms had gotten sweaty.

It was as if everything was happening in slow motion. Planes crashed behind us, Mason pulled me through the crowd, pieces of wood flew everywhere and a fire had started.

After loads of walking, we hurriedly passed our neighborhood and entered onto a dock. There was a huge crowd waiting there already, and a hundred of us had newly joined.

Everyone was was being separated. Men to the left, women and children to the right.

I looked at Mason, my eyes already blurred with tears. "You said we'd be together," I whispered in panic.  Mason held both my hands in his.

"It's going to be alright, okay?" He said trying to reassure me. I nodded, letting my tear freely slip down my cheek.

"Hey - hey, hey," Mason gently wiped a tear away. "If I don't make it, you can carry on with your life, open up that bakery you've always dreamed of."

"Why can't we just stay and go into hiding?" I asked. Mason raised his eyebrows. "Live here again, where Japan is currently attacking and no one knows for how long? We don't know how strong shelter we'd need to have to live till all this is over, and even after that we'd need enough money because our house is probably destroyed, but where would we get a job when this city is damaged?"

Mason had a point, there was no denying it. A plane crashed nearby us and the pilot flew out, landing harshly on the ground. His face was covered in blood. Mason pulled my head to face him. I looked at his sea blue eyes. I could imagine him drowning in the sea.

"You'll be fine, I believe in you." He placed a kiss on my forehead before letting me go and walking towards the mens' line.

I sighed and went to the opposite line. Children were screaming as fearful mothers tried to calm them down.

Four people arrived and joined us. As we got closer to the boats, I could see that the mens' boat were a bit unstable, small and wrecked unlike ours.

I crossed my fingers hoping that nothing would happen to Mason. Our neighbor - who had woken us up - was with me as well. She was trembling and whispering reassuring words to her two kids.

We were allowed to get on the boat. Many shoved me towards it, them wanting to get into the boat and flee as quickly as possible.

I managed to get a spot in the middle of the boat, right at the edge. The pilots of the planes above us noticed that we were getting away and were now aiming to crash into the sea.

Mother nature was disturbed by this and before we knew it, there was a storm. Our boat got unstable, we bumped into each other as we rocked sideways. "We're loosing control of the boat!" Someone yelled.

I gritted my teeth and shivered as I felt the splatter of rain hit my face. I attempted to cover my face, keeping my eye on the men's boat. My eyes searched around for Mason in particular. Instead, I found myself looking at the mouth movements of them talking.

I wasn't able to catch on with what they were saying, but their panicked expressions gave it away. One of the men pointed at something and they all froze. I bit my bottom lip in attempt to stop trembling.

"What do you think is wrong?" The person who sat besides me ask. "I don't know," I whispered,"I just hope they're going to be fine."

Some of the men turned to us and started shouting at us - which we could barely hear. It was not long after when we could see their boat starting to sink. By this time, everyone's attention was caught.

Tears started forming in my eyes and my crossed finger tightened. I just sat there helplessly hoping that a miracle would happen.

Their boat was almost gone. "No!" I sobbed, trying to jump into the water to save Mason, but the lady besides me pulled me back. What I feared was that Mason didn't know how to swim, and each second the waves raised.

I cried till there were no tears left, I screamed till my voice was hoarse. The boat was long gone, yet I didn't give up.

Darkness. My eyes shot open as I came to my senses.

I licked my dry lips which tasted salty. I sat up and looked around.

It was a tent that I had been put in, my body laying on long plastic. My head ached as the memories came flowing in. Fire. Sea. Boat. Hole. Mason.

I swiftly stood up and got out of the tent. My bare feet sank a bit the soft sand.

I looked at my surroundings. There were a lot of small tents in them, and then a huge one in the middle of all of them, a caravan with a red plus sign had been parked there as well.

All I cared about was Mason. I tried to get my balance as I walked and looked inside of the tents hoping he had survived the sinking of the boat.

After no luck, I began to search near the water incase he had washed to shore. It started to get dark at each minute, yet he's body was no where to be seen.

I had to face the truth. Mason had left.

Mason wasn't there to place his reassuring arm around my shoulder.

A tear slid off my cheek.
