3. The Surface

She watched curiously at the two creatures standing just above the water on some sort of solid sand, they were loud and looked almost the same compared to the other creatures where there was no clear resemblance to another. They had spoken aloud and though the words were clear to her it was still rather muddled, after all, she had only practiced words underwater.

"Yui! Wait up! The teacher said we shouldn't be this close to the pier!"
The creature that had hair flowing in the air like the color of sand in the sun raced up to the familiar looking one with a mark across their shoulder to the collarbone, who was one shark fin from falling into the water.

"Don't be ridiculous Kai, there's no one better than us!"
"In a swimming pool, we've never swum in the sea before and we don't know how deep it goes or what lives in there! There could be sharks!"

The one with the mark, Yui, groaned before looking into the sea and she could've sworn he was staring at her, not that he was of course. He looked back at the one with sandy hair and his lips pulled up into a grin before he jumped into the sea, it was interesting to see the water splash into the air and the other one, Kai, jump in after a moment.

She ducked her head below the surface to watch the creatures swim, they kicked their weird appendages to propel themselves around the water. They must not have had gills because when Yui went swimming deeper he was pulled back to the surface, what she couldn't stop thinking was what they were to each other.
They looked very similar but she didn't understand what that meant since she had never seen another one of herself if she had she would've known. Even though it had taken her a year to explore the cold waters she made sure to be thorough.

Secretly she had hoped to find another creature that even resembled her, or even just another to talk to.

Her head popped up again to watch the creatures as they splashed about seeming to make loud noises before Yui dived back into the water, she followed trying to keep her distance but watched as he went even deeper before. Kai didn't seem to follow though, so she did.
It was a few minutes when she noticed he seemed to grow slower in his movements, bubbles rising bit by bit from his mouth until his legs stopped. Kai must've noticed it was taking too long because he shot down into the depths, reaching for Yui.

He wouldn't have made it, he was slower than the other one. So she swam towards them removing any thought of keeping afar from the creatures, if they couldn't breathe underwater it was unlikely that they would be any real danger to her or the Oceans.
She watched as when she grabbed both their arms which were unusually rough under the water and kicked her tail stronger than ever before, bringing them up into the air they usually breathe and onto the sand. It took a few seconds but Kai coughed lightly and when he saw her his eyes grew to the size of oysters, shaking his head before reaching over and slamming his hands onto Yui's chest.

It took a moment but he coughed up water and Kai wrapped his arms around him, she released a sigh that caught both their attention.
There was complete silence as the two looked her up all the way down to her glittering teal tail, when the one with the mark, Yui, spoke his voice louder than a whale song.

"Holy...Bro am I really seeing...a mermaid?"
"We both are."

Mermaid.
It sounded nice to her ear, she wondered if that was what she was and if so how did they know that and she didn't?

Just as Kai was about to open his mouth to speak the sound of nearby creatures made them try to hide her tail quickly, her eyebrow raising slightly before Yui motioned and spoke at the same time, slowly so she understood.
"Not safe here, go over there."

He pointed to the furthest pier, hoping the mermaid understood but since she didn't say a word, and just looked at them for a moment before jumping into the water and disappearing like foam.
When she was gone the brothers looked at each other, both sitting in disbelief before getting up and running side by side, talking in between breaths towards the end of the pier.

"It can't be a real mermaid can it?"
"I dunno man, it had a tail and looked like a girl."
"But mermaids aren't-"
Yui glared at his brother, shaking his head.
"Don't even go there, we haven't explored the ocean enough to know and we just saw one! Clearly, they are real."

At least they hoped so, a mermaid would be better than having some form of brain damage.
They slowed when they reached the end of the longest pier into the ocean, glancing around for the teal-tailed mermaid when suddenly a small splash caught their attention.

"She is real..."

Kai whispered when she peeked up from the surface, her golden eyes poking through the snowy-soaked hair.
Yui leaned down to the edge and offered his hand, smiling at her.

"Hi, I'm Yui."
