27
It's past midnight. Everyone in my view is asleep, and the only sounds in the room are snoring men and the cold wind outside hitting the window. I have been pretending to be asleep for hours. I had to make sure everyone is asleep before I commence my plan. I place my mask on my head so I won't have to carry it, and then slowly, soundlessly, and smoothly, I climb down my bed. The guy under me makes an annoyed noise and turns in his sleep. I get scared, so I quickly climb back up again. When it's back to normal, I climb down again with even less noise and tip-toe my way out of the room.
The whole Berg is quiet like a haunted mansion. I have on purpose went to bed tonight before anyone else so no one can see me my clothes and doubt my intentions. I sneak to the kitchen to grab two apples and a flask of water. After that, I sneak to the planning room- where I was with Four and Tris today- to take out a torch, a gun, and a small knife; and I fit them in my belt and baldric. I see a machete, my dear old weapon, but as I'm not planning on killing any Grievers right now, I keep it in its place.
I place on my jacket then leave the room to find my way out. As opening the main door now would invite everyone out, I've already made my plan and found another way. A good thing about this Berg is that it's quite similar in design to Jorge's Berg that I got to search for a whole day before I was taken into the Cranks Palace. Thus, I know about the automatic, emergency exit near the cabin. Smart. Right?!
When I'm by the door and going to turn its wheel to open, I hear the sound of sobbing. I locate it to be sourced from the cabin. Although every inch of me cries to hurry out of the place before anyone discovers me, I pause and listen.
"You should've seen him today, Neal. He was about to flare at any moment," Dr. Whitman cries. "He had that mad look in his eyes as if he still were a crank. I don't know what I should do with him. He doesn't even bloody understand all that we're trying to do for him!"
"Hey, Sorcha. Will you not worry about it? The boy is almost a man. You can't protect him forever. You've already done everything you can do. What else do you want? That's his fate. You wanna change that?"
"He shouldn't be here, Neal. He shouldn't be here. Also, Four told me today that while they were in the pits, Newt flared over him when he just told him not to go into somewhere likely infested with bloody cranks because he heard some humming. It's all because of his bloody friends, and this is all your fault, by the way! If you had bloody done what I had originally planned, if he hadn't had even the tiniest bloody idea that his bloody friends might be alive, we wouldn't have been here and dealing with this all!"
"But now he knows, and you know that even if I had done your plan, a time would've come when he discovers that his sweet mommy has been lying to him about his friend. By the way, have you even decided when will you be telling him?"
"Telling him what, now, Neal? Do you see he is like telling him anything right now?"
"Telling him that you're his mother and that the little girl who enjoyed calling him 'brother' today is actually his little sister?"
"Not yet. I can't have it now. If I told him now, he would flare in my face and God knows what then."
"Sorcha, don't you think that you are a bit... I don't know. He only needs some time, and he will be your steed."
"You think that I'm exaggerating? Yes. Indeed. I will be exaggerating when he will flare and crank over everyone and God knows what then. I will be exaggerating then. How do you think we will live like this?!"
"He's your son, Sorcha."
"If only his father were here, he would have known how to deal with him."
"So, what are you planning to do now?"
"He shouldn't be here. It's parlous to keep him. I will register the base tomorrow to send a helicopter to take him and Lennie home. I don't even know what Lennie is doing here."
"Alright. Tomorrow, I shall do that myself. Now, wipe your tears and go to your daughter. Sorcha, don't make her sense anything. That girl has gone through enough. You know you're everything she has now with her brother as you say and her sister God knows where. See you in the morning."
I hear her approaching, so I quickly open the door and sneak my way out.
