eight

I left work late on the day Liam came home from tour. It was a rainy Thursday in Manchester and the sky looked far more dull than it normally did. Clouds filled the sky leaving small cracks for sun to seep through, making the peaks of buildings glow as rain hammered down alongside them.

Exiting the office block I walked along the street, taking a left down the side of the canal, following the pathway deeper into the city.

I usually met Liam by a cafe just before the skyline started to build in central Manchester, and today was no different. We had arranged, on the one of three phone calls I'd gotten from him over the past month, to meet in the usual place.

As I walked towards the cafe, I noticed that Liam wasn't there. Walking towards me was a familiar face, but not the one I was looking for.

However, I wasn't too disappointed.

"Brit, fancy seeing you here."

Damon smiled, pulling me in for a hug and kissing my cheek.

"How are you? And what are you doing here?" I asked, almost laughing at the fact he was so far north of his home.

"I'm up here using a studio with the boys, we're recording some new stuff, should come and have a listen one day when you're free, be up here for the next few weeks I should think."

Damon and I spoke for the next ten minutes. Talking to him made me wish I'd made more of an effort to see him, he was great company and when I was with him, he was so engaging that I forgot about everything else for the time being.

Well, not quite everything.

"I've just been working really, my brother and his-"

"Alright darlin,"

Hearing his voice in the near distance, I spun on my heels and saw Liam walking towards me, a denim jacket and sunglasses complementing his features on that particular day.

Only, his initial grin and outstretched arms soon vanished as he came closer, his eyes fixing on Damon.

Conversation dropped, silence filling the air only to be masked by the rush of water from the canal beside the three of us, the sound of bicycle tyres racing past, causing a small breeze.

Liam placed an arm on my shoulder, pausing for a moment before looking at Damon and saying, "Didn't know yous two knew one another."

Damon, the man that always had a smile on his face, no longer looked like himself as his grin dropped, his arms folded at his chest and his eyes narrowed.

"I didn't know you two knew each other, either."

"Yeah she's the missus innit'."

Damon just nodded slowly.

"I'll be off now, I have some stuff to mix back at the studio. Nice catching up with you, Brit."

As quickly as he appeared, Damon had turned and left.

Though I, admittedly knowing him briefly, could tell that he was not himself. Damon was not a man that was intimidated, and although Liam was incredibly intimidating to anybody else, I knew that he wouldn't have an effect on Damon.

Not like this.

"Wait!"

I moved away from Liam, leaving him stood by himself as I caught up with Damon.

Tapping him on the shoulder he turned and looked at me, his eyes white and face pale. Looking at me, he licked his lips.

"What's wrong? That wasn't you, Damon."

He shook his head, looking up at the sky before back at me.

I was incredibly confused. I pondered the reasoning behind the clear dispute between the two of them, deeming it musical more than anything. Only, I couldn't have been more wrong.

Almost simultaneously, both men spoke.

"Brit I'm sorry-"

"He's cheating. I passed him half an hour ago, he was sat in a bar with a girl, I saw them kiss. You shouldn't have had to hear it from me, Brit. I'm sorry."

"Fucking hell why did you do that you prick." Liam said, shoving Damon in the chest, making him stumble backwards slightly.

For a second, I saw Damon clench is fist, only to drop it, relaxing his shoulders and biting his tongue, all whilst I tried to digest what he had told me.

"Well you weren't going to tell her were you. You're a disgrace, Gallagher."

"Watch your fuckin' mouth son or you'll be face first into the canal if you don't-"

"Stop it! The both of you." They both paused, turning to look at me.

"Liam? Is this true?"

I would've been crying, if I had any tears left, but I didn't.

"Of course it's not, he's chatting bollo-"

"Liam."

Looking him dead in his pale blue eyes, I saw the glaze over them fade away, leaving him melting under my stare, disappearing along with any hope I had that Damon was mistaken.

"I was drunk, and-"

"No, Liam, you're not drunk. And that's not an excuse anymore, it never was. I'm, I'm..."

I so badly wanted to tell him I was done, that I wanted nothing to do with him ever again, but when he looked at me I felt something stopping me, almost like he had so much control over me that he could stop me from hurting him.

And perhaps that would've been the case, had Damon not stepped around us, forcing me to change my gaze from Liam to him, seeing the sympathy fall over his face and the expression telling me to take some pride in myself for once.

"I'm done, Liam. We're done."
