Chapter Two: Celebrity Overnight

"O'Hara! Dude, you are so fucking lucky! You're going to fit right in with all the Supers of the Alliance!"

"Well, well, cutie! Welcome to the big leagues! With you by Fernandez and Andrews' sides, all of Dallas will have their eyes on you every moment!"

"You're so blessed to have two Supers as your godbrothers! I was gagging when they revealed themselves last night on TV and you got mentioned! How the hell did you not know after all this time?!!"

Those were some of the quotes from students and teachers as the first week of my senior year (and the end of my world) came to play with me dealing with all the praises and offers for parties and first cracks as club sign-ups all around. And in case you forgot what's going on, here's a quick recap.

1. I have two annoying godbrothers who are the biggest thorns in my sides. They are Drake Andrews and Jorge Fernandez, the co-captains of the swimming and diving team.
2. Every girl (and gay guy) wants to get laid by them. Everyone else wants to be their friends.
3. Every teacher calls them their favorite teachers and they expect me to follow them.
4. Last week, my parents told me that Drake and Jorge were to be by my side and I was to shadow them and be part of their world.
5. I made the biggest mistake in discovering that they are also the same superheroes that I was a fan of since freshman year.
6. As of the day before I started senior year, Mom and Dad told me that I was to consider being their sidekick with both Jorge and Drake revealing themselves to the world at a press conference and them announcing that I was to be their best friend and ally. That instantly made me into a celebrity overnight.

And all I could say is...what the fuck is going on with my goddamned life?!

"I still can't believe that Drake and Jorge are superheroes and that they're your godbrothers," Shandra said as we made our way through the halls of Centennial Grove, more and more students clamoring around to talk to me while I brushed them off. "How the hell did you not know, Skylar?"

"Damned if I know, but last week just proves my point," I remarked as we reached my locker. "It's only Thursday, and I'm already bogged down with invites to house parties by the football team, lunch dates with some of Dallas' high-society members, and all that. It's even worse when I have to do these interviews for all these TV and magazines as well as the newspapers: Extra, the Dallas Morning News, Entertainment Weekly, Entertainment tonight, Wall Street Journal, GQ, Vogue- it's all giving me a migraine! I had to take aspirin to get through today alone!"

"Yikes," Rhea hissed, shaking his head. "You're a brave man for even putting up with this, mate. I'd go bat-shit crazy like a wallaby on pot if I was you."

I sighed heavily before my eyes landed on the newly-arrived Principal Lewis (an athlete of a man) and his wife (the vice-principal, a statuesque brown-haired beauty) approaching me with the two heroic drips following behind them. "Skylar! It's so good to see you," the man said, giving me a wide grin. "Miss Finessey and Miss McNeil, if you two can allow us and the gentlemen to have a chat with Skylar alone."

Shandra crossed her arms. "Anything you can say to him, you can say to us," she said, Rhea nodding in assent as she too crossed her arms and glared at the boys. "We're not going anywhere."

"Let them stay, sir," Jorge said smoothly, shooting my friends a wide grin. "They are his friends, after all."

"All right, then," Mrs. Lewis replied. To me, "Skylar, you being friends with your godbrothers as well as being their ally for them when they're superheroes will soon open a lot of doors for you. And with you being a senior, it's high time that you start living it up and broadening your horizons."

I inhaled deeply. "And why would I do that?" I asked. "I already have the Honors Society as well as the book club to work with, not to mention the invites and interviews that are now coming my way."

"Even so, young man, you're now a celebrity in the eyes of the world," Principal Lewis noted, giving me a pointed stare. "And after talking with your parents, the faculty and staff, as well as the guys here; we managed to come to a decision."

"And that is?"

"This ought to be good," Rhea muttered.

"Starting today, you're to not only join the swimming and diving team but also get into the groove of being the gentlemen's sidekick," the principal told me. "And with the latter, you'll be given passes to join Blue Crush and Green Wave in saving the day from all kinds of villains."

"Wait, you can't be serious," I said in disbelief. "I mean, me being on the swim and dive team is one thing since I know how to swim and all that. But me being a superhero? That's a bit much, don't you think?"

"Not at all, amigo," Jorge said as he stepped forward. "And besides, this can be good for you to be part of the Hero Alliance. Speaking of which, all the heroes have been asking for you and insisted that you get a leg up on being a hero."

I shook my head. "That's not my cup of tea," I began.

"It's not up for discussion, young man," Vice-Principal Lewis said, her tone brooking no argument. "You've been very ornery to Mr. Fernandez and Mr. Andrews for three years in school, and it's time that you play nice with them. Any refusal could land you in hot water and risk your future in attending college in jeopardy."

The lion, the witch, and the nerve of this bitch! "Is that a threat?" I asked hotly.

"No, but you might want to consider your ways. You're obstinate, abrasive, loud, stubborn, and narrow-minded when it comes to us and our friends," Drake, who had remained quiet until now, commented as he joined Jorge at his side. "It's time to shake things up, bro. Time to get a superhero edition of an extreme makeover."

"You guys," Rhea began.

"Miss McNeil, this does not involve you or Miss Finnessey," Principal Lewis interrupted. "You ladies had your fun with Skylar for the longest. Now it's time for Jorge and Drake to spend time with him."

I couldn't believe it.

These folks were dead-ass serious about all of this. "Can't I have some time to think about this?" I pleaded.

"No, son," Mr. Lewis said as he brandished out a document that was on a clipboard. "This is a little contract that the boys and I alongside your parents and the school superintendent made. This states that you'll take part of the whole she-bang: being popular, being the sidekick of Blue Crush and Green Wave, and all. Failure to sign it will result in immediate consequences which could lead to an expulsion at the end of this month if you continue to act ornery. And be mindful that you have until the end of the day to make your final decision. Sign it now, and your life will take on more blessings. But say no...and you'll be a pariah before you can yawn."

"This is for your own good," I heard Mom say as she and Dad came to join the others. "Skylar, you can open a lot of doors if you join the boys. But you can also become everyone's problem to be eliminated if you refuse. Not even your father and myself can guarantee your future if you say no. Give this a chance."

The cheek, the nerve, the gall, the audacity, and the gumption! These people have me on a string. I knew that they meant every word. To not sign could seal my fate and doom me into nothingness. But if I did sign...who knows what can happen.

"We'll be by your side no matter what you choose," Shandra said confidently, patting my back.

"You gotta do what you gotta do," Rhea added. "Shandi and I will ride or die with you 'til the end."

Folks, it's good to have friends by your side who can help you through thick and thin. Can't say the same about my parents since they're on the bandwagon. All the same, my decision was made. I grabbed a pen and began signing the contract.

Jorge and Drake smiled widely. "Good choice," the latter said. "After your tryouts for the swimming and diving team, you'll head to the base and meet the others as we get you pumped and powered up."

"You're going to have the time of your life," Dad promised me. "Satisfaction guaranteed."

The group of heroes and adults left me and my friends to our thoughts. "What now, Sky?" Rhea asked.

I exhaled a deep breath. "Fasten your seatbelts, ladies," I said tiredly. "Senior year is going to be wild."

"O'Hara!"

I whirled around to see a beautiful black-haired young woman dressed as if she was Elena Gilbert from Vampire Diaries, from her black knee-length skirt and cream tights to her violet blouse and ankle boots. And despite her beauty, she did not look happy to see me. She was Greenlee Sammons, one of the cheerleaders who claimed to be Jorge and Drake's girlfriend. "What is it, Sammons? Now's not a good time," I said.

"I just want to say that you need to stay away from my boyfriends," she said, ber voice thick with contempt. "You may be their new sidekick and shit, but they are mine! Only mine!"

We watched her walk away. "What just happened?" I asked, eyes lit in confusion.

"I have a feeling that you just made an enemy out of one my fellow cheerleaders," Shandra sighed. "And whether you meant to or not, Skylar, you're going to deal with her more than you can expect."

What is my life right now?

Total words as of today (cumulative word-count after chapter one): 3478 words.

Looks like things are going to heat up for Skylar as he's caught himself a femme-fatale in one Greenlee Sammons from the cheer squad. And unfortunately for him, he'll go toe-to-toe with her in the chapters to come.

But coming up next, it's time to visit the base of the New Alliance of Heroes as Skylar gets his powers, gains muscle, and gets his first superhero suit! Don't miss out!
