Chapter 4

She stepped out of the room into the hallway, one hand on her hip.

"Hey! What do you think you two are doing here?"

They turned, glaring in the her direction, her silhouette just visible beyond the candle light.

"What do you mean 'what are we doing here'? This is our territory, ya old crone!" One of them said in a very gangster like voice, trying to sound tough, despite their regale attire.

"I'm sorry, could you say that again?" The white haired girl asked, glowering. Anger  and irritation gurgling up from the back of her throat.

"He said this is vampire territory, old man. You deaf?" The other shouted across the echoing hallway, mocking her with the loud noise. "Besides, that are you doing here? This isn't any place for a human to be, especially not an old man like you!"

The insults rang loudly through the halls, bouncing off the walls reaching the ears of anyone inside the temple. The boy's ignorant comments made those in hiding gape in horror, knowing full well what was about to occur.

The the ground cracked beneath her feet wall exploded beside her as Janey pulled up her sleeve, he fist shaking in anger. "For your information, I'm not a human and just because my hair is white does not mean I'm an old man. I'm a girl!" The air was suddenly very warm, static in the air making the hair on their necks stand on end as they saw the crackle of electricity around the figure before them.

Rushing forward before either of them could make a sound, she slammed into one of them flinging him into the wall causing a shattered-center-crater to form in the wall from where he made contact. She grabbed the other one with the candle by the collar, lifting him off the ground despite being a lot shorter than him.

"You got that, kid?" She growled, glaring down on him, contradicting the height difference by lifting herself off the ground, flying.

"Y-yes, ma'am." He stuttered, his teeth chattering from her performance of strength and mystery.

"Well, good." She said cheerfully, her scowl flipping into a smile as she dropped him on the ground making him land on his bum. The candle fell to the floor, flickering before burning out.

Letting herself drop to the floor, she crouched down to his level hugging her knees with her slightly transparent black and blue wings glowing faintly behind her in the dark. Picking him up by scruff of the neck like a kitten, she lifted him up, turned him around, and set him back down again. Pushing him in the back, encouraging him to move forward.

With a smile hiding her eyes, she said, "I suggest you get going before I change my mind." Her eyes opened, red beams staring down on the boy.

Quickly he scrambled away, his companion tumbling not far behind him, occasionally glancing back in fear as Janey stood up, her hands placed triumphantly on her hips.

"Well, that's over" Smiling, she spun around and marched back into the study, completely ignoring the crater in the wall as she swung around the door frame into the room. "What?" She asked in response to her friend's awe struck faces as she swayed a bit recovering from the twirl.

"I don't ever want to be on your bad side again."

"Uh huh." Yoshinoia said numbly in agreement.

"Come on, I wasn't that bad." Janey said, walking over to one of the untouched tables. "I mean, I would have done worse." She replied optimistically, leaving her comrades shivering in fear.

Nearly two hours later, as Po-po set down the last crate he could look into, sneezing in the process, Yoshinoia pulled himself up, leaning backwards in an effort to stretch his aching back, and Janey scanned over the room one last time.

"Well, it looks like it's not here." She muttered, sighing softly under her breath.

"Hey, Sparky, what were you guys looking for anyway?"

She glanced at her young friend, sighing. "Well, we were looking for certain information on interdimensional space travel but it looks like someone beat us to it." Scratching the back of her head then sighing once more.

"But this place hasn't been raided in ages." He protested, pointing to their inch thick footprints they left in the dust lining the floor.

"Well, like I said, this place is old. Some one could have easily taken it centuries before we came here." Shrugging, she waded through the piles of dusty research scattered across the floor.

"So what will we do now?" Po-po asked, exiting the room beside his friends.

"I guess I'll just have to find another way." She sighed, passing the crumbling wall she had damaged.

After nearly an hour of navigating the temples twisting halls, the evening sunlight was harsh, making them scowl and shade their eyes.

Po-po beamed. "Yay! Sunlight!" Stretching himself out like a tree.

"Wow, I completely lost track of time." Yoshinoia said in astonishment, looking directly into the sun. "I thought it was way later."

"You and me both, man." Janey replied.

"Yeah, I gue - Hey! Po-po!" Yoshinoia spun around, as if he's just remembered something of extreme importance and needed to tell Po-po right away, but when he turned the boy was nowhere to be seen. "Oh god. Janey, Po-po's gone."

"Wait, that?!" She spun around, flustered and confused. "Where did he go!? He was just here!"

A large bang and glass shattering scream resounded through the forest canopy.

"There!" She pointed south.

"How can you tell?" Yoshi said as the cries echoed through the air, coming from all directions.

"Because, that's where the highest concentration of sound is." She replied hastily, already running, Yoshinoia following closely in pursuit of his younger cousin.

As they speed through the forest, the roars and screams grew louder.

"Somebody help me!"

"Seriously, that kid can be so useless sometimes." Janey muttered under her breath, bearing a somewhat disgusted look on her face as she hopped from branch to branch.

"Come on, J. Give him a break, he's been captured." Yoshinoia said sympathetically.

"Yeah, but you and I both know very well that he can fight back." She retorted, glaring in the direction of the sound.

"Yooooooooooooooou... have a point." He said, surrendering with a sigh. "Welp, we better go get 'em."

Entering a clearing, they spotted a giant lizard like creature bearing a strong resemblance to Godzilla mixed with a chameleon holding Po-po in its scaly fist.

"Oh my god! This is awesome! I thought Godmeleons were extinct!" Janey exclaimed, her face lighting up with delight.

They stared in awe as the monster turned it's chameleon-esk head to roar at the little dragon in its clutches.

"Ahh! Help me! It's breath stinks!" Po-po winned, squirming in it's claws.

Yoshi stopped, shouting up to Po-po, "Well, fight back."

"Don't you think I've tried that already!?" He squirmed to nag at his comrade. "My breath attack doesn't work and my claws can't get through it's skin. Ugh." He winned, flopping over like a wet noodle to feign sadness and defeat.

"Well, of course your breath weapon doesn't work, you're not fully developed yet!" Janey shouted to him as she ran up the side of a tree, flipping off and stabbing the Godmeleon in the back between its pointy spines. "Yeah, your claws can't penetrate its skin because you're in your human form!" She laughed, dragging her sword down the creature's spine as gravity pulled her down before jumping off.

The Godmeleon spun around hissing with anger, it's moving in a wave like pattern as a warning, almost like a rattle snake.

"Psstch. Ha ha ha!"

"Hey! What's so funny!?" Po-po cried, unsuccessfully trying to pry himself out of his captor's claws.

"I -pss- I don't know, maybe the way it sounds like someone peeing? Aha ha ha!" She doubled over grabbing her stomach. "Oh my god! I'm dying!" She looked up and wiped the tears out of her eyes. "OK, I think I'm good now." She straightened up, slashing her black sword through the air. "This is gonna be fun." She said, smiling menacingly. She whipped up a fireball with her free hand, crouching down to touch the ground with it, sending a line of fire straight at the monster. "Hee yah!" She rushed forward, twirling around the beast slashing at its ankles, almost dancing with her sword as blood splurged out of it's back and dripped off it's legs as it swayed about. The Godmeleon hissed, dropping Po-po and running away.

"Here, you need a hand?" Yoshi extended a gloved hand to his friend, helping him up.

"Man, she really is scary." Po-po said, looking at Janey as she beamed in the direction of the escaped Godmeleon who's left a path of flattened trees in it's wake, splattered with lizard blood.

"Agreed."

They watched her bend down and pick up something off the forest floor. It was a fallen plate of the wounded Godmeleon.

"Hey, Guys! I've got a souvenir!" She shouted excitedly, waving the bloodied plate through the air making the two cringe.

"Must you always strive to find souvenirs, sister?" Yoshinoia asked, his eyebrows twitching.

"Yes, I must." She beamed, holding the plate out in front of her like it was some awesome carnival prize she had just won, or more accurately, like a little kid showing someone their favorite toy. "Well, I guess I'll just save this for later." She slung a leather backpack around to her front off her back, opening the buckle strap and sticking the scale in the bag.

Po-po and Yoshinoia made sickened faces.

"I think I'm gonna barf." Yoshinoia muttered.

"Remind me never to go in there again." Po-po replied cringing.

"Okey dokey, all good." Janey said, patting her bag, now back on her back. "So where are we going now?" She asked cheerfully.

Suddenly a blue and purple lined hole opened up behind her sucking all three of them in.

"Oh, Shoot! It's another dimensional portal!" Yoshi cried as they were sucked through the spiraling rainbow of a tunnel.

"Seriously, where do these things keep coming from!? And where are we going?" Janey asked, recalling all the other places they had traveled through dimensional holes, most of them not verry plesant.

"And I hope we don't end up fifty feet above ground like you guys said before." Janey and Yoshinoia swiveled their heads towards Po-po as he said this.

"Dude, don't say that! You're going to jinx us!" They said simultaneously.

All of the sudden they found themselves out in the open sky surrounded by clouds and falling from fifty feet in the air.

"See? You jinxed us!" Janey shouted, her hair suddenly waist long and black.

"Sorry!" Po-po shouted back as the wind ripped their voices away.
