1982 - Los Angeles

Dean Winchester, 23, enrolled into the University of California in Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting, finds himself bored to death while being sort of stuck in his dorm room.

He smiles at the dart board stuck behind the room door, challenging himself to beat his own record score. He stands up and stretches his arms before picking up the darts that sit in his ACDC mug, gifted to him by his brother Sam on his 19th birthday.

He places his feet shoulder-length apart and bends forward slightly, raising his arm up and aiming at the room door. He shuts his left eye and sticks his tongue out a bit. He hits the first one close to the centre, but Dean isn't satisfied with it.

He picks the next dart and aims at the centre. He moves his arm back and forth, trying to get the best position. Dean swings his arm back and-

The room door opens slowly causing Dean to get distracted for a moment, and throwing the dart to the far side.

A guy stands there, appalled by the dart missing him by a hair and sticking out of the door's side frame. "Oops," Dean mumbles and the guy looks at him with surprise.

"Sorry about that, I wasn't expecting anyone to enter," Dean says and places the rest of the darts on the table, to avoid anymore mishaps.

The guy enters slowly, senses turned up a level to make sure he's prepared for anything unexpected.

"I'm Dean by the way," Dean introduces and smiles. The visitor smiles forcefully and nods, "I'm uh... C-Cas."

Dean tilts his head, puzzled, "Cas?" The guy nods quickly, "It's short for... C-Castiel." Dean smirked and looked to the floor, "Castiel... That's a nice name. It's different."

Castiel smiles softly, "Thank you Dean. Your name is also pleasant." Cas walks over to the empty side of the room, where an untouched bed stays. He places his bags on top and takes his jacket off, putting it over the desk chair's back rest.

"Uh, I need to ask... why are you here?" Dean questions, watching Castiel's every move. Cas turns around with an eyebrow raised, "I'm your roommate. See it says here. Room 7 on the 6th floor, 67."

Castiel walks over to Dean and shows him papers with all the names of students and their dorm rooms. Next to Castiel's name is another, Dean Winchester.

"Ah, well," Dean nods, "Welcome roomie. We shall enjoy the year!" He puts his hand out and Castiel shakes it, though being hesitant at first.

It's the first time Dean notices Castiel's eyes. Behind the thick-framed black square glasses, he has the most beautiful pools of blue eyes that he has ever seen. People say that Dean's eyes are beyond this world but he thinks that he has just found the new achievement holder.

"Um Dean, are you alright?" Castiel asks, clearly uncomfortable. Dean snatches his hand from Castiel's, eyes drifting to his lips for a split second.

"Oh sorry, uh," Dean grows nervous, "Y-You look similar to someone I know." He winces discreetly at his lie but Cas doesn't notice. All he does is smile.

"So, what are you studying over here?" Dean asks as he throws a piece of gum into his mouth. He asks his roommate if he wants but Cas refuses.

Castiel sits cross legged on his bed, placing his finger on the page he is currently reading as a bookmark. 'Journey To The Centre Of The Earth'; he loves the plot and characters of the classic, and is reading it for the third time.

"Oh I've enrolled into 'Physics and Astronomy'," Castiel replies and Dean smirks, impressed, "I love space and everything within it. I've loved it since my dad and I used to lay down and watch the stars all night long when I was a younger."

Dean smiles, "That's nice." Castiel places his crumpled paper bookmark in the novel and places it next to him on the bed. He doesn't want to let go of this conversation for some reason.

"What are you doing?" Castiel grabs his pillow and places it in his lap, hands over it. It's a habit that he's gained over the years, he's unaware of why. It's a sign that tells others that he's interested and comfortable.

Before speaking, Dean inserts a a cassette into his player, much to Castiel's curiosity. Dean clicks the play button and sits back straight.

He adjusts the volume as he says, "I thought it was a bit quiet. Uh, my course isn't anything fancy but I plan to go into acting so I'm doing 'Theatre'."

Castiel raised his eyebrows, fascinated at Dean's choice. "That's actually really cool! I uh, I think you'd make a good actor..." Castiel stutters slightly, regretting how awkward he's made the conversation.

Dean smirks slightly, for some reason liking the fact that his roommate complimented him.

Dean continues to ask Castiel questions about himself and his life, the curiosity surprising Dean. "I'm not that interesting Dean... I'm pretty sure you've got a more eventful past," Castiel says as he gestures to all the knick-knacks and poster surrounding Dean's side of the room.

"Well... I doubt that. I'm pretty sure you're as interesting as you look Cas," Dean smiles softly and Castiel loves how he uses his nickname to address him.

Castiel is about to speak but Dean puts his arms forward, freezing, as his ears perk to here his cassette player. "Oh yes! I love this song!" Dean grins widely and starts to sing along.

"And be a simple kind of man. Oh, be something you love and understand. Baby be a simple kind of man. Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can!"

Dean sings along while Castiel sits quietly, feeling slightly awkward. "Come on sing along!" Dean says but Cas shrugs. "I don't know this song," He says and Dean looks at him with shock. He turns the volume down a bit then looks back at his roommate.

"Lynyrd Skynyrd... Simple Man? No bells ringing?" Dean questions and Castiel shakes his head. Dean frowns, "Okay you really need to listen to music. You will be a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan by the end of the year." Dean smiles and Cas nods.

"Y-You have a nice voice," Cas says and Dean raises his eyebrows. "Thanks but my brother would probably argue with you. He gives me stares whenever I sing," Dean says and looks to the floor.

"Where is your brother?" Castiel enquires and pushes his glasses up his nose. "He's with my dad, they had some... work to complete," Dean answers, "My dad dropped me off here a bit early, I had time to set up." He looks back at the wall and admires the posters.

Castiel gets up, deciding to empty his bags out as well. Dean walks over to his cassette player and keeps switching songs till he finds one he likes. He nods his head to the music.

"I'm hot blooded, check it and see. I got a fever of a hundred and three. Come on baby, do you do more than dance? I'm hot blooded, I'm hot blooded!"

Dean continues to sing, dancing a bit. Castiel smiles softly when he glances back.

"I've heard this one," Castiel furrows his eyebrows and Dean sighs with relief. "Thank God you know Hot Blooded," Dean says and stands beside him, "You need any help?"

Castiel nods, giving Dean one of his duffel bags and asks him to place any books on the table while putting everything else on the bed.

"So, what type of music do you like?" Dean asks as he opens the bag. Castiel rubs his hands, "Uh, I'm not a music person. I like books and s-stuff."

Dean looks through the bag of items then spots something zipped up in the bag's inner pockets. "Look what we have here!" Dean says as he takes out three cassettes, "And you say you don't like music."

Castiel tries to take it from Dean but all he does is smirk and run to the cassette player. "Let's see what you like," Dean reads the label and furrows his eyebrows, " 'From Gabe'?"

"Gabriel, he's my brother. He gave it to me before I came here," Castiel explained, nervous, "Please don't play it." Dean grins mischeviously, cupping his ear, "Sorry what? I didn't hear you."

He inserts the cassette into the player and presses the play button. After a few moments it plays a song. Dean raises his eyebrows and smiles softly. Castiel is in the worst possible state, nervous to the core.

He'll think I'm a loser. He loves rock and now he's going to listen to my music?! Castiel thinks.

"Oh nice! Billie Jean!" Dean says excitedly, "I love M.J." Castiel relaxes a bit as Dean sings along. Cas wasn't that relaxed to go back to his work, he feared what song would play next. Dean jumps to the next song, his expressions softening.

"Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better.
Hey Jude, don't be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better"

"I-I love The Beatles," Dean says and smiled as he scratches his head, "You know... Cas, You don't have to be embarrassed about the music you like. It's your preference and I love whatever I've heard till now. I like your taste in music."

It's enough to relax Castiel completely, "Thank you Dean. It's just that-I was afraid that you like rock music and I... I like clam ones more."

Dean raises an eyebrow, "Oh Cas come on, you don't have to be scared of me! I'd never judge you about anything." Castiel nods then turns back to empty his bags out while Dean continues to listen to his roommates music.

There is silence for a few moment's but then Castiel looks up with a look of horror.

Oh no. Not that song, Castiel thinks.

He jumps towards Dean and attempts to stop the music but Dean is much stronger than him... Castiel didn't consider that.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Dean inquires, blocking Cas off. "Don't hear this song please!" Cas fears for his life as he begs.

The guys fall silent, Dean staring at his cassette player as if he could see the song. He begins to hum the tune, a smile appearing on his lips.

"But I can't help falling in love with you."

Dean sings the Elvis Presley song lyric, not realising how close Cas was to him. He places his finger on the middle of Castiel's glasses and pushes them up his nose. Castiel stares, frozen at the gesture.

"I love this song Cas. Classic and one of my favourites," Dean says softly, "I told you... I don't judge people. I won't ever judge y-you." Castiel takes a deep breath before standing up straight.

"I'm sorry, It's just... You're so cool and you'd think I'm a loser. I don't have many friends, I always screw things up and I just-"

"Shh don't say anything else," Dean says, "I like you Cas. I like how you're quiet and more of a listener than a talker. I like how you care about others but... don't worry about your image so much. If people don't like you then it's their loss."

Cas stood there, surprised and speechless at his roommates words. "You're not a loser and don't ever think that. If people have told you that then well, they're the losers. I like the way you are and I think we'll have a lovely year together," Dean smiles and puts his hand out.

"Friends?" He says and Castiel stirs himself slightly, shaking Dean's hand and smiling. "Friends."

"Take my hand. Take my whole life too. For I can't help falling in love with you. For I can't help falling in love with you."

Dean sings and Castiel decides to join in, laughing after he finishes. "Wow. You sing really nicely," Dean raises an eyebrow and smirks. Castiel looks embarrassed and chuckled nervously. He walks back to his bed and continued to empty his bags.

Dean rummages through his cassette tapes and picks out one, reading the label and smiling. "Hey Cas?" He says and Cas turns around. Dean sticks his hand out, holding the tape.

"Here. I want you to have this," Dean tells and Castiel takes the tape, reading the label.

" 'Dean's top thirteen Zepp tracks..." He says aloud and Dean smiles smugly.

"Thank you but, what's this for?" Castiel questions and Dean looks to his feet. "Just something to remember me with, a gift for a new friend," Dean replies and Cas smiles.

"Don't worry, I won't ever forget you Dean," Castiel says, "Thank you. It's very thoughtful of you. I think I need to gift you something as well."

"Oh don't stress about it," Dean says and winks at Castiel. The young, glasses wearing university student feels as if everything will work out.

I've already made a friend... It's going to be a good year, He smiles at the thought, finally ending the emptying of his bags.

"But I can't help falling in love with you."

The lyrics, embedded into his head, always remind him of Dean... and of the day they met.
