Ch 1. Minotaurs Are Stupid
I have just started editing this book, so it'll be pretty obvious what has and hasn't been rewritten. Enjoy~
"Hey Astria, wait up."
"Come on we're nearly there! I can smell it, not far now and we'll have him."
I leap from branch to branch in the direction of the town. We've never let a monster hurt civilians and we're certainly not starting now. My hair bounces on my shoulders as I jump through the trees. I smell a sudden change in the atmosphere and stop, looking down through the branches.
"Did you find it?" Vivian inquires as she lands next to me, folding her large black wings against her back.
"Yeah, I can smell it directly below us. Amanda, you go down in stealth mode and find out the reason it stopped. We're so close to human population it wouldn't have stopped to pick daisies when there's a whole town of tasty people to eat just around the corner."
"Yes sir." Amanda salutes me, and then promptly disappears.
Phoebe glides down to the tree I'm in while Dena lands and parks her broomstick against a branch, padlocking it in place just to be sure it doesn't fly off.
"The Minotaur is directly below us, Amanda's just finding out the reason it's stopped and whether we can attack it now." I inform everyone as they clamber through the branches towards me.
"Sounds good to me. You'll be leading the attack I presume?" Dena asks with a raised eyebrow, her heels clicking against the wood of the branch as she walks along it easily.
"With this class of monster you know I'm the only one who's a fair match against it, so there's no point being jealous." I say seriously, recognising her tone of voice immediately.
"I don't know what you're talking about." She says as she folds her arms stubbornly and looks away. She is so jealous. You can see it in her body language and picture perfect face.
"If we're going to attack then now would be the best time." Amanda says as she pokes her head out of the trunk of the tree, "it appears to have gotten itself into quite a pickle," she giggles.
"Alright then, I'll handle this one. If I get taken down you know the drill." I jump off my branch and quietly scrabble down the tree.
When I reach the bottom I slide behind a bush and survey my surroundings. Sure enough, the Minotaur had gotten itself into trouble.
It snorts in annoyance as it tries to dislodge its hoof from between some small intertwining tree roots sticking out of the ground, and it's all I can do to stop myself from laughing as it then proceeds to head butt the ground angrily, only leading to getting its long horns stuck in the roots too.
It take note that it's left its neck wide open, and take this as my chance to attack it unguarded. I vault over the bush I'd been behind and sprint forward before leaping through the air. My body swiftly becomes slimmer and longer as I grow ears and a tail, and my bones are rearranged to form the shape of a beast with four strong legs, not to mention my clothes slip straight off my now furry body. They're gonna need a good wash tonight.
My sharp canines sink into the minotaurs unprotected neck and causes blood to spray everywhere. The previously occupied monster bellows in sudden pain and finally yanks its head free of the ground, nearly uprooting the tree it'd been stuck under.
It flails wildly around desperately trying to shake me off as it continues to bellow up a storm. In response I sink my fangs deeper into its hazel brown hide and don't let go. By now blood is absolutely everywhere and the intoxicatingly sweet smell drives me wild. I try to close my nostrils off so as not to lose control but it's increasingly difficult when you're this close to mouth wateringly fresh meat.
I take one more powerful bite and rip chunks of flesh out of its neck, up until I hear a heart sickening crunch and it finally collapses to the ground, smacking its head on the forest floor. It continues to lie motionless as I clamber off its back and inspect the deep wound with curiosity, its broken neck bones sticking up out of the mess of pink and red flesh at odd angles.
"Not exactly what I'd call a clean kill but it looks like it did the job." I hear Phoebe comment with faint amusement as she glides down, her fiery wings lighting up the dark undergrowth like a beacon.
"I didn't enjoy it much either but it got too close to a populated area." I say as I lick my lips with a long tongue, wiping off the fresh blood.
"Ooh, I so want a pair of fur boots for my wardrobe. Just without the bloody parts." Amanda announces as she floats around the minotaurs carcass, inspecting its soft brown fur with enthusiasm. Her blue ghostly aura shining in the sun and reflecting off little rainbows.
"All of this blood and raw meat's made me hungry." I growl, licking my chops hungrily. Unable to help my wolfly instincts
"You're such a savage sometimes." Says Dena with disapprovement as she jumps down as well, broomstick in hand. "If I had been the one taking lead I would've vanished it to space. Just like that." She clicks her fingers giving me a smug look like the proud witch she is.
"If you keep acting like that I might just sink my fangs into that pretty little face of yours." I say growling at her, and her expression suddenly becomes panicky as she sees my sharp blood red eyes.
"It was just a joke, geez." She adds in hurriedly, shifting a little further away from me and stepping casually behind one of Phoebe's wings for protection.
"Anyway, we'd better take our prize and head home." Says Phoebe cheerfully as she grips a horn tightly on the minotaurs head. She then raises her other hand and lights up her fingertips with a bright red flame, using it to burn the flesh connecting the horn to the minotaur's scalp until it comes off with a sickening squelch of ripping flesh.
"What about ma boots." Amanda moans, bottom lip sticking out as she floats over our heads.
"Oh stop moaning." I snap in annoyance, looking up to see her drift past like a breeze in the wind. Sometimes I wish she would get carried away by the wind the way she complains.
"I'm a ghost, we're all about moaning." She argues defensively, shrugging her shoulders.
"Fiiiine. Dena, can you arrange something?"
"I guess so." Our brunette witch waves her hand effortlessly and in a flash a large section of the minotaurs furry hide has disappeared, leaving the pale pink of its back showing. Then in Dena's hands she holds a pair of fashionable brown fur boots and holds them out to an extremely excitable Amanda.
"Oh my god I love them!" She squeals happily as she hugs them to her chest and then hastily pulls them onto her bare feet, still floating through mid air.
"I don't see why you even need boots. It's not like you walk anyway." I mutter under my breath.
"It's all about the looks honey." She says as she looks me up and down with a raised eyebrow.
Getting the message I stand up on my haunches and wobble over to Vivian, who's already thankfully picked up my clothes off the ground and hands them to me. I balance them on my front paws and teeter over to the closest bush.
Once safely hidden behind the greenery I begin to feel my bones click back into their original places and my long brown hair falls out onto my bare shoulders, my body no longer wrapped in silver fur but instead varnished by smooth pink skin. Hastily grabbing my shirt and shorts I slip them on over my body. Why not underwear you ask? Because in case of an emergency transformation my underwear usually gets ripped to shreds in seconds by my fast changing body, or worse, stays on. You ever seen a wolf wearing pink underwear? It's embarrassing, trust me.
I brush off some leaves from my top and pat down my unruly chestnut hair. Just to make sure my ears have properly dispersed, before stepping out to face my fellow monster hunters and best friends, all waiting expectantly for me.
"Lets head back then." I say with a sharp toothed grin, "Nymph will probably have dinner ready by now. And hopefully the minotaurs body will dissolve before human campers find it." I stride over and grab Amanda by her foot, walking off back to our cabin as she lays back and I pull her through the air, everyone else in tow as they either fly/ glide along behind me like follow the leader. Ya know, sometimes I really envy being flightless.
