If It's The Last Thing I Do
"Danny!" Susan shouts as she runs around the house, looking for her son. "Suse, Suse, Suse. We will find Danny, I promise you." Brian assures her as he grabs her shoulder and she has a terrified look on her face. "No." she argues but Brian shakes his head. "No. Take Kate and go now. Now, while you still have a chance." he tells her. "Not without Danny." she said, firmly.
"We will find him." Brian assures her. "I am not going out there with Mom alone." Kate argues. "She's right. Until we find your son, the safest place for you right now is in the shed." Dean said and Kate looked horrified. "I am not going in there either." she said.
"Yes, you are. It is the best defense. The windows are boarded up. It's got one door. It's our best shot right now. Trust me." Dean said and Kate and Susan share a look then turn to Brian. "Suse. Kate. Go. Go." he tells them and they, reluctantly, leave the house. "All right, you, me and (y/n) will take the outside." Sam said as he points at me, him and Brian then he turns to Dean and Ted. "You two take the house. Let's go." he said and we all split off.
After checking the outside, Sam and I get the family into the shed and we stay in there and wait for Dean and Ted. We waited for them for awhile when Brian speaks up. "Look, why are we just standing here? Let's go in. Let's check the house." he said. "We have to wait for those guys to get back, okay?" I tell him and a second later, there was a knocking sound.
We turn to the door and waited until Dean's voice calls out to us. "Sam, (y/n), it's me." he said and Sam and I run towards the entrance and remove the items we put up against the door.
We open the door and Dean comes in, alone. "Did you get Danny?" Susan asked Dean. "No." Dean replied and I could tell on his face that he was upset. "No? Well, where's Ted?" Susan asked. "He's outside." Dean said.
"Well, why doesn't he come inside?" Susan asked and Dean bites his lips, like he didn't want to reveal what had happened. "Because I had to carry him out. I'm sorry." Dean said and Susan furrows her brow. "You're...what does that mean? What does that mean, you're sorry?" she asked, frantically.
"Are you saying that he's dead?" Brian asked Dean, who doesn't respond. "No. No, he's not saying that he's dead. You're not saying that, are you?" Susan asked, tearfully, and Dean lowers his head. "Dean..." I said, softly, and he sighs and looks back at Brian, Susan and Kate.
"We were in the walls and she attacked." He said and Susan gasps. "Oh my God." she cries. "And I couldn't get to him in time." Dean said and Kate begins to cry. "Uncle Ted is dead?" she asked. "I shouldn't have left him alone. I'm very sorry." Dean said and he goes back outside.
I frown then walk outside, following Dean. He was standing in the yard with his hands in his pockets. I slowly walk up to him and place a hand on his shoulder. He turns his head to me and I could see what happened to Ted bothered him.
"Dean, you did what you could." I tell him and he looks down at the ground, in regret. I raise a hand and place my hand on his cheek and run my thumb over his cheek, he places his hand over mine and kissed the palm of my hand.
Then we hear Susan and Brian talking. "We'll find him, Suse. We will." Brian said. "Where else is there to look? Danny's dead, isn't he?" Susan asked, panicked. "No, Suse." Brian said. "He is. Why not? She killed my brother. Now she killed my son." Susan said, angrily. "No, Danny is alive." Brian argued. "No, no, he isn't." Susan yelled back. "Yes, he is. Do you remember what he said about the girl who lived in the walls? She said he could stay." he said as i remove my hand off of Dean's cheek as we look over at the shed.
"No. No. I just don't understand why this happens to us. I mean, we're good people. We're a good family." Susan said, tearfully. "What happened to Andy happened, okay? I cannot change that. But I will find Danny, I promise you. And when I do, we are gonna be fine. You and me, the kids, we're gonna be fine." Brian said, firmly. There was silence then Susan said, weakly. "Okay."
Brian then walks out of the shed, passed me and Dean, and stares up at the house. "Andy your son?" I asked Brian after Dean and I approach him. "Oldest. He got himself killed in a car accident last year." Brian explained and I frowned. "We're sorry." Dean said and I nod. "It nearly tore Suse and I apart. Still could, I imagine. That's why we moved here. Fresh air, fresh start. Not even my line. Marriage counselor. 'Course, she might be right. After all, what could possibly go wrong in the country?" Brian said, upset, as he shrugs and Dean looks down then back to Brian with a look of a determination.
"I'm getting your son back. If it's the last godforsaken thing I do." Dean said and Brian turns to him. "Why do you care so much?" Brian asked and I look over at Dean and I think I had some idea why he was determined to save this boy.
But before Dean could give an answer, Sam comes out. "Dean. (Y/n)." He calls out and we look over and see him holding up a book "We gotta talk." he said and we go over to him.
We head into the house and I point out the book in his hand. "What is that?" I asked him. "Rebecca's diary. I just finished reading it." Sam said. "And?" Dean asked. "That girl back there? Pretty sure she was Rebecca's daughter." Sam said and I shake my head at this.
"Rebecca had a kid?" I asked, confused. "It's all she talks about. Being pregnant, being ashamed of being pregnant." Sam said. "Jeez, rent Juno and get over it." I grumbled.
"Wait, why kill herself after the baby?" Dean asked Sam. "Maybe because her dad called her a dirty little whore and said he was gonna lock the baby up." Sam explained. "Why would he say that?" Dean asked and Sam says nothing and gives us a look as if to say Think about it.
Dean and I think and then I realized what Sam was meaning and I felt my stomach churn, Dean seemed to have come the same conclusion. "Oh, gross." he said, disgusted. "I suddenly feel sick." I said as I place a hand over my stomach. "Yeah." Sam said in a similar disgusted voice.
"So the daddy was the babydaddy too?" Dean asked. "Dude was a monster, Dean." Sam said and I shake my head, disgusted. "Wow, a story ripped from an Austrian headline. Humans, man." Dean said.
"So she's been locked up her whole life?" I asked Sam. "You guys saw her eyes. Has she ever seen light? She's barely human." Sam said. "Okay, so, what, then, she's been caged up like an animal and she busts out and ganks dear old Dad? Slash Granddad?" Dean asked and I try not to gag. "I guess." Sam said. "Well, can't say I blame her." I said and Dean nods.
"I'm sure her life was hell, guys. It doesn't mean she gets a free pass for murder." Sam said then Dean glares at Sam. "Like you know what hell's like." He growls and Sam's taken aback then I look over at Dean. "Dean, he didn't..." I try to defend Sam but Dean shakes his head. "Forget it." he said and there was a moment of silence between us then Sam speaks up.
"So where do we find her?" Sam asked. "Kid's gotta eat, right?" Dean said after thinking on it. "What?" Sam and I asked. "He kept her hidden, locked up, but he had to feed her, didn't he?" Dean said. "I guess." Sam said. "I think I know where." Dean said.
Later the boys bust a hole in the kitchen wall, letting light into the shaft. "Could've kept her hidden here for years. Kept her fed, nobody would ever know." Sam said as Brian, who came to help us, flinches away from the open shaft. "Danny! Danny!" He shouts while Dean shines a light down the shaft.
"Watch out, I'm going down." Dean said. "No. That's my son." Brian argued. "I know it is, but I said that I would get him. I will. Let me." Dean said and Brian stares at him then nods. Dean looks down and up the shaft and scoots through the hole, then starts to climb down the side.
"Hey, you got curtains? We need rope." Sam said and Brian goes looking while I hold the light on Dean.
*3rd Person POV*
Dean hits the bottom of the shaft and looks around. There's a rosary on the floor with a large wooden cross.
Meanwhile, Susan and Kate were still in the shed and Susan was hugging her daughter as she cries. "It's okay. Shh. It's okay." Susan whispers then one of the boarded-up windows bursts in, making the girls scream
Back in the basement, Dean finds one of his guns, picks it up and checks it. "Bitch is a klepto." he mutters and he finds another gun and checks it too. "Come on. Danny. Danny." Dean yells and he hears the sound of someone trying to scream but it was muffled.
"Danny?" Dean calls out and he finds a hole in the brick wall. He shines the light through and sees Danny, bound and gagged. He grabs a butcher knife from nearby and cuts Danny's bonds. The boy then scrambles through the hole.
"Your dad's upstairs. Come on. Watch your head, watch your head." Dean said as he guides Danny back. "Hurry, he's coming back." Danny said and Dean stops and turns to Danny. "He?" he asked, confused. "Her brother." Danny said then they heard a. inarticulate yell. A boy then tackles Dean, who drops the light, and they began to struggle while Danny watches.
Back at the shed, Susan holds a rake as they watch the open window nervously. A knife comes through the wall right behind them and they scream. "Oh my God!" she shouts, fearfully.
Sam drops one end of a rope of knotted curtains down the shaft and Danny appears at the bottom. "Danny!" Sam shouts while Dean and the boy continue to fight, making Dean lose a gun.
Danny then ties the rope around him, quickly. "Okay!" Danny shouts and Sam turns to Brian and (y/n). "Pull." he said and they all hoist Danny up the shaft. "Come on, buddy. Come on, buddy. Don't look back, Danny. Just come on, come." Brian said as they continue to pull the rope.
"Mom." Kate cries as they look around until a box against the wall moves catches their eyes. Susan shoves Kate behind her and tries to hold the wall with the rake under the bottom. "Mom!" Kate screams.
Finally, Danny was out of the shaft and Brian hugs his son. "Come on. You okay? It's okay." He said as he hugs his son. "Get him out of here. You gotta go." Sam said and Brian and Danny leave while (y/n) shines a light down the shaft. "Dean?" she calls out.
The Boy stabs at Dean, who holds him off with the light, then grabs his gun and shoots, the boy falls over dead. (Y/n) comes in through the hole and sees the sight before her.
The Girl breaks down the wall, which caught Susan and the rake underneath. The Girl holds up a knife, ready to stab, but is yanked out by the ankle. "Mom! Come on, Mom!" Kate shout as the girl screams outside then there was a sound of someone stabbing someone.
Then seconds later, there was a pounding on the door, which made the girls scream. "Suse!" Brian calls out and the girls rush to the door and Susan opens it. Brian stood there, outside, holding a bloody knife.
Kate cries while Susan holds Danny. Sam, Dean and (y/n) come out the front door and see the girl's body.
The next day, Dean jacks down the Impala after replacing the tires. Sam and (y/n) pull out their duffel's out of the repacked trunk and throw them in the back of the car. Brian and Susan walk over.
"Thanks for the head start." Dean tells them. "Why doesn't it surprise me you guys don't like the police?" Brian asked, smirking. "It's sort of a mutual-appreciation thing, really." Sam said and Brian shakes Dean's hand. "Well, thank you." he said and he shakes Sam's and (y/n)'s hands. "Thank you." Susan said.
"You okay?" (Y/n) asked her. "No, we're the opposite of okay, but we're together." she said and Brian takes Susan's hand. "Thanks." she said and Dean and (y/n) nod.
*(y/n)'s POV*
We come up to an overpass and then get out of the car. Sam comes out to mine and Dean's side with burgers and hands one to each of us. I unwrap mine and took a bite while Dean unwraps his, looks at it, and wraps it back up.
"You okay?" Sam asked him as I swallow my bite of the burger. "You know, I felt for those sons of bitches back there. Lifelong torture turns you into something like that." Dean said. "You were in hell, Dean. Look, maybe you did what you did there, but you're not them. They were barely human." I said to him.
"Yeah, you're right. I wasn't like them. I was worse. They were animals, guys, defending territory. Me? I did it for the sheer pleasure." Dean admits and Sam and I look at him. "What?" we said in unison.
"I enjoyed it, guys. They took me off the rack, and I tortured souls, and I liked it. All those years, all that pain. Finally getting to deal some out yourself. I didn't care who they put in front of me. Because that pain I felt, it just slipped away. No matter how many people I save, I can't change that. I can't fill this hole. Not ever." Dean said and I frown at this, not sure what to say.
What Dean did in Hell, I can't blame him. I know I don't know what it's like down there but I can't blame Dean for what he did. He might've thought it would change my thoughts on him, making me think of him as a monster, or make me turn away but after everything we've been through, I can't turn my back on him. All I feel is sympathy and pity for him.
I don't see a monster.
I see a damaged man that has been through literal hell.
