A Dark Secret

Dean and I were inside the motel room, he was sitting on a bed and I took residence in a desk chair when Sam opens the door and comes in. "So, I think it's safe to say we can rule out Nessie." Sam said as he shuts the door behind him. "What do you mean?" Dean and I asked in unison as Sam sits next to his brother. "I just drove past the Carlton house. There was an ambulance there. Will Carlton is dead." Sam replied and we look over at him in shock.

"He drowned?" I asked Sam. "Yep. In the sink." Sam replied, nodding. "Holy crap." I muttered in shock. "What the hell? So you're right, this isn't a creature. We're dealing with something else." Dean said. "Yeah, but what?" Sam asked, thinking. "I don't know." Dean said, shrugging. "Water wraith, maybe? Some kind of demon? I mean, something that controls water...water that comes from the same source." I said and Sam has a look of realization.

"The lake." He said. "Yeah." Dean and I said. "Which would explain why it's upping the body count. The lake is draining. It'll be dry in a few months." Sam said and I nodded. "Exactly! Whatever this thing is, whatever it wants, it's running out of time. And if it can get through the pipes, it can get to anyone, almost anywhere." I said and Dean stands up. "This is gonna happen again soon." He said and I nodded again. "And we do know one other thing for sure. We know this has got something to do with Bill Carlton." I said.
"Yeah, it took both his kids." Dean said. "And I've been asking around. Lucas's dad, Chris—Bill Carlton's godson." Sam reveals and Dean and I look over at him. "Let's go pay Mr. Carlton a visit." Dean said to us.

"Mr. Carlton?" I called out to Bill as he sits on the bench which was on the dock. He looks up at us as the boys and I approach him. "We'd like to ask you a few questions, if you don't mind." Sam said to him. "We're from the, the Department—" Dean started to say when Bill interrupts him.

"I don't care who you're with. I've answered enough questions today." Bill said, depressed. "Your son said he saw something in that lake. What about you? You ever see anything out there?" Sam asked but Bill doesn't say anything. "Mr. Carlton, Sophie's drowning and Will's death—we think there might be a connection to you or your family." I said to him as he continues to stare at the lake.

"My children are gone. It's...it's worse than dying. Go away. Please." He tells us. The boys and I exchange a look then head back to the Impala, since I left my bike at the motel. "What do you boys think?" I asked them. "Aw, I think the poor guy's been through hell. I also think he's not telling us something." Dean replies as I lean on the Impala.

"So now what?" Sam asked us as Dean looks towards the house and stands there. "What is it?" Sam asked his brother. "Maybe Bill's not the only one who knows something." Dean said and he pulls out the picture Lucas brought him.

"I'm sorry, but I don't think it's a good idea." Andrea told us. Dean got the idea for us to go to Andrea's house so we could talk to Lucas and maybe get him to tell us more. "I just need to talk to him. Just for a few minutes." Dean begs her.

"He won't say anything. What good's it gonna do?" She asked him. "Andrea, we think more people might get hurt. We think something's happening out there." Sam told her and she looks down then shakes her head.

"My husband, the others, they just drowned. That's all." She said to us, firmly. "If that's what you really believe, then we'll go. But if you think there's even a possibility that something else could be going on here, please let me talk to your son." Dean said to her and she looks between us and sighs.

The four of us approach the doorway to Lucas' bedroom a d sed him coloring again, his toy soldiers standing around him. Dean walks and crouches down by Lucas. "Hey, Lucas. You remember me?" Dean asked him as I noticed that Lucas made two drawings of a red bicycle. "You know, I, uh, I wanted to thank you for that last drawing. But the thing is, I need your help again." Dean said as Lucas was drawing a person in water. Dean opens the house picture and puts it down in front of the young boy.

"How did you know to draw this? Did you know something bad was gonna happen? Maybe you could nod yes or no for me." Dean said but Lucas keeps coloring. "You're scared. It's okay. I understand. See, when I was your age, I saw something real bad happen to my mom, and I was scared, too. I didn't feel like talking, just like you. But see, my mom—I know she wanted me to be brave. I think about that every day. And I do my best to be brave. And maybe, your dad wants you to be brave too." Dean said to him and I kinda give a small smile at this.

For someone that supposedly doesn't like kids, he's actually not that bad with Lucas.

Lucas drops his crayon and looks up at Dean then hands him a picture. "Thanks, Lucas." Dean said to him and he walks up to us and we start to head out.

We were in the Impala when Sam was holding up the picture, which was of a white church, a yellow house, and a boy with a blue baseball cap and red bicycle in front of a wooden fence. "Andrea said the kid never drew like that till his dad died." Dean said to us as I, sitting in the backseat, lean over Sam's seat and look at the drawing.

"There are cases—going through a traumatic experience could make people more sensitive to premonitions, psychic tendencies." I said. "Whatever's out there, what if Lucas is tapping into it somehow? I mean, it's only a matter of time before somebody else drowns, so if you guys got a better lead, please." Dean pleads and I let out a sigh. "All right, we got another house to find." Sam said.

"The only problem is there's about a thousand yellow two-stories in this county alone." Dean said as Sam and I take another look at the picture then pointed at the church. "See this church? I bet there's less than a thousand of those around here." I said. "Oh, you think you're so smart." Dean sneered, with sarcasm. "Yes, I do." I said, smiling at him and he rolls his eyes at me.

"You know, um...What you said about Mom...You never told me that before." Sam said to Dean, referring what Dean said to Lucas, after a few seconds of silence. "It's no big deal." Dean said then he looks over at Sam, who gives him a concerned look. "Oh God, we're not gonna have to hug or anything, are we?" Dean asked and Sam scoffs and shakes his head.

We approached a white church shaped like the one in int the picture. Dean holds up the picture and looks at it, comparing it to the scene in front of him; there's a yellow house next to the church and a wooden fence near the house. The three of us exchange looks then we look up at the church and cross the street to the house.

"We're sorry to bother you, ma'am--but does a little boy live here, by chance? He might wear a blue ball cap, has a red bicycle." I asked Mrs Sweeney, who was this old lady that was living in the house, after we enter the house. "No ma'am. Not for a very long time. Peter's been gone for thirty-five years now." She said as she sighs. "The police never—I never had any idea what happened. He just disappeared." She said as Sam points out to me and Dean a number of toy soldiers on a table.

"Losing him—you know, it's...it's worse than dying." Mrs Sweeney said and I glanced at the boys, remembering that's exactly what Bill said earlier. "Did he disappear from here? I mean, from this house?" Dean asked her. "He was supposed to ride his bike straight home after school, and he never showed up." She said as I pick up a picture off the mirror. There were two boys in the picture, one of them was Peter with a bicycle. Then I flip it over and read from the back of the picture, my eyes widen in shock. "Peter Sweeney and Billy Carlton, nineteen seventy." I said and I look at the boys in horror.

"Okay, this little boy Peter Sweeney vanishes, and this is all connected to Bill Carlton somehow." I said as we were in the Impala and we were driving back to the Carlton's. "Yeah, Bill sure as hell seems to be hiding something, huh?" Dean said. "And Bill, the people he loves, they're all getting punished." Sam said as I think this over.

"So what if Bill did something to Peter?" I asked the brothers. "What if Bill killed him?" Sam asked us. "Peter's spirit would be furious. It'd want revenge. It's possible." Dean said as he starts to drive a bit faster.

We pull up to the front of the Carlton house then run out and approach the house. "Mr. Carlton?" Dean asked as he knocked on the door. But then we heard an engine roar. The boys and I go around the house to see Bill going out on the lake in his boat. "Hey, check it out." Dean said and we run to the end of the dock, yelling.

"Mr. Carlton! You need to come back!" Dean yells. "Come out of the water! Turn the boat around!" I screamed. "Mr. Carlton!" Sam shouts but Bill ignores us and keeps going. The water rises up and flips his boat over, making Bill and his boat vanish.

Sam, Dean and I walk were walking in the police station with Jake and entered his office when Andrea gets up. "Sam, Dean, (y/n)." Shs said as she stands up, putting a bag and a container on her chair. "I didn't expect to see you here." She said to us.

"So now you're on a first-name basis. What are you doing here?" Jake asked, suspiciously. "I brought you dinner." Andrea said as she gestures to the container. "I'm sorry, sweetheart, I don't really have the time." Jake said to her, exhausted.

"I heard about Bill Carlton. Is it true? Is something going on with the lake?" She asked, with worry. "Right now we don't know what the truth is. But I think it might be better if you and Lucas went on home." Jake said when Lucas looks up and whines, looking stricken; he jumps up and grabs Dean's arm. "Lucas, hey, what is it?" Dean asked the boy as he looks up at him, fear etched all over his face. "Lucas." I said, softly, as I kneel down to him.

"Lucas." Andrea said but Lucas continues to shake Dean's arm and whines. "Lucas, it's okay. It's okay. Hey, Lucas, it's okay. It's okay." Dean assures the young boy as Andrea pulls Lucas away from Dean and leads him outside. Lucas doesn't look away from Dean while I stand back up. I feel like something's gonna happen. He looks beyond terrified. I thought as Jake throws down his jacket and goes into his office.

"Okay, just so I'm clear, you see...something attack Bill's boat, sending Bill—who is a very good swimmer, by the way—into the drink, and you never see him again?" Jake asked us, suspiciously. Dean glances at Sam and I before he turns to Jake. "Yeah, that about sums it up." He said. "And I'm supposed to believe this, even though I've already sonar-swept that entire lake? And what you're describing is impossible. And you're not really Wildlife Service." Jake said and we look at him, surprised.

"That's right, I checked. Department's never heard of you three." Jake said as he glares at us. "See, now, we can explain that." I said but Jake raises his hand at us. "Enough. Please. The only reason you're breathing free air is one of Bill's neighbors saw him steering out that boat just before you did. So, we have a couple of options here. I can arrest you for impersonating government officials and hold you as material witnesses to Bill Carlton's disappearance. Or, we can chalk this all up to a bad day, you get into your car, you put this town in your rearview mirror, and you don't ever darken my doorstep again." Jake informs us. "Door number two sounds good." Sam and and I nodded. "Yeah, I second that." I said. "That's the one I'd pick." Jake said and the boys and I leave the station.

Dean and Sam were in the Impala, waiting at a traffic light, I was on bike right behind them. Suddenly the light turns green but the Impala doesn't move. I drive up to the passenger side and I can see Sam talking to Dean. I lean over and knocked on the window, Sam turns then rolls down the window.

"What's the hold up?" I asked them. Sam shrugs when Dean started to turn right instead of left. "Uh, the interstate's the other way." I shouted through the window as I follow them. "I know." Dean said. "But Dean, this job, I think it's over." Sam said. "Yeah, plus I don't want to go to jail." I said. "I'm not so sure." Dean said as he continues to drive and I keep up with them so I can talk to them.

"If Bill murdered Peter Sweeney and Peter's spirit got its revenge, case closed. The spirit should be at rest." I said to Dean. "All right, so what if we take off and this thing isn't done? You know, what if we've missed something? What if more people get hurt?" Dean asked. "But why would you think that?" Sam asked him. "Because Lucas was really scared." Dean replied and Sam and I look at him in shock

"That's what this is about?" Sam asked Dean. "I just don't want to leave this town until I know the kid's okay." Dean said and I glanced at him. "Who are you? And what have you done with Dean Winchester?" I asked. He glances at me then back to the road. "Shut up." He said and we start to make our way back into town.

"Are you sure about this? It's pretty late, man." Sam said to Dean, once we arrived back at Andrea's house. Dean ignores him as he goes and rings the doorbell. At that moment, Lucas opens the door, and he looked beyond terrified. "Lucas?" Dean said before Lucas takes off. "Lucas!" Dean yells as we follow him.

Water was pouring out from down the stairs and then down the  hall and under a door Lucas started pounding on. Dean pushes him over to me and Sam and kicks in the door, and see that the bathtub was filled with water as it overflows. I could just make out Andrea's back sticking out of the surface.

Lucas grabs Dean, so I run into the bathroom and stick my arms in the tub, trying to pull Andrea out. She was pulled back under, but Sam comes and helps me and we keep pulling until she is all the way out. She starts coughing up water.

Dawn was breaking as we were sitting in the living room. Andrea was dry and wearing comfortable clothing, she was still pretty shaken from what happened earlier. "Can you tell me?" I asked her. "No." She said as Dean looks through notebooks on bookshelves. "It doesn't make any sense." Andrea said then she starts to cry. "I'm going crazy." She said as she puts her face in her hands.

"No, you're not. Tell us what happened. Everything." Sam said to her, soothingly. She looks between me and Sam then let's out a heavy sigh. "I heard...I thought I heard...there was this voice." She replied  "What did it say?" I asked her. "It said...it said come play with me." She sobs. "What's happening?" She asked when Dean puts this book down in front of her, then flips it open to a picture of some kids.

"Do you recognize the kids in these pictures?" He asked her and she looks up at him, confused. "What? Um, um, no. I mean, except that's my dad right there. He must have been about twelve in these pictures." She said as she moves her finger over to another picture of Jake as a child; he is standing next to Peter. Dean looks at me and Sam, all three of us realizing what's going on. "Chris Barr's drowning. The connection wasn't to Bill Carlton. It must have been to the sheriff." Dean said to us. "Bill and the sheriff—they were both involved with Peter." I said.

"What about Chris? My dad—what are you talking about?" Andrea asked when Dean looks sideways. "Lucas?" He calls out but Lucas was staring out the window. "Lucas, what is it?" Dean asked him. Then Lucas opens the door and walks outside, all of us follow him. "Lucas, honey?" Andrea calls out but we continue to follow.
Lucas stops and looks at the ground, then at Dean. Dean turns to Andrea and said. "You and Lucas get back to the house and stay there, okay?" Andrea pulls Lucas back to the house while the boys and I fetch some shovels from the Impala. Then we start digging.

After while, Sam's shovel clanks against something then we dig with our hands for a bit and pull out a red bicycle. "Peter's bike." I whispered in shock.

"Who are you?" A voice asked. The boys and I turns around and see Jake standing there, pointing a gun at us. "Put the gun down, Jake." Sam ordered as we drop the shovels. "How did you know that was there?" Jake asked us. "What happened? You and Bill killed Peter, drowned him in the lake and then buried the bike?" Dean asked him and Jake looks at him, angrily. "You can't bury the truth, Jake. Nothing stays buried." I said, firmly. "I don't know what the hell you're talking about." Jake growled.

"You and Bill killed Peter Sweeney thirty-five years ago. That's what the hell we're talking about." Dean said as Andrea runs up. "Dad!" She screams. "And now you got one seriously pissed-off spirit." I told Jake. "It's gonna take Andrea, Lucas, everyone you love. It's gonna drown them. And it's gonna drag their bodies God knows where, so you can feel the same pain Peter's mom felt. And then, after that, it's gonna take you, and it's not gonna stop until it does." Sam said. "Yeah, and how do you know that?" Jake asked, angrily.

"Because that's exactly what it did to Bill Carlton." I said. "Listen to yourselves, all three of you. You're insane." Jake said. "I don't really give a rat's ass what you think of us. But if we're gonna bring down this spirit, we need to find the remains, salt them, and burn them into dust. Now tell me you buried Peter somewhere. Tell me you didn't just let him go in the lake." Dean said to Jake, who still had a gun pointed at us.

"Dad, is any of this true?" Andrea asked him. "No. Don't listen to them. They're liars and they're dangerous." Jake said, never taking his eyes off of us. "Something tried to drown me. Chris died on that lake. Dad, look at me." Andrea exclaims and Jake turns to her. "Tell me you—you didn't kill anyone." She demanded but he looks away and her jaw drops. "Oh my God." She whispers, disparagingly.

"Billy and I were at the lake. Peter was the smallest one. We always bullied him, but this time, it got rough. We were holding his head under the water. We didn't mean to. But we held him under too long and he drowned. We let the body go, and it sank." Jake admitted and Dean and glanced at each other as Jake turns to Andrea, who looks horrified. "Oh, Andrea, we were kids. We were so scared. It was a mistake. But, Andrea, to say that I have anything to do with these drownings, with Chris, because of some ghost? It's not rational." He said to her.

"All right, listen to me, all of you. We need to get you away from this lake, as far as we can, right now." Dean said as Andrea turns her head and gasped. We look over and see Lucas going down to the lake. "Lucas!" Jake yells and we all run up to the dock while Lucas was leaning over the side.

"Lucas!" Dean shouts as we run. "Lucas! Baby, stay where you are!" Andrea said but Lucas was pulled into the water. The boys and I keep running to the end of the dock then we dive in. "Oh my God!" Andrea screams and she takes off her jacket to jump in.

"Andrea, stay there!" Sam said to her. "No! Lucas!" She screams. "We'll get him! Just stay on the dock!" I said and we dived under the water. For about a minute, I kept looking but I couldn't find Lucas the I resurfaced and see that Sam and Dean had as well. "(Y/n)? Sam?" Dean calls out but Sam shakes his head. "No luck here, either." I said.

"Lucas, where are you?" Andrea calls out and we dive back in to look but nothing. Once we resurface again, Jake had made his way into the water. "Peter. Lucas—he's, he's just a little boy. Please, it's not his fault, it's mine. Please take me." Jake pleaded and we looked over at him. "Jake, no!" Dean shouts when we see a boy that looked like Peter, resurfaced. "Just let it be over!" Jake pleads before he was dragged down. "Daddy! Daddy! No!" Andrea screams and the boys and I dive back down into the water.

I swam around and deeper into the water when I noticed something. I get closer and see that it was indeed, Lucas. And it seemed Dean saw him at the same time as he swims over and both of us grab Lucas and swim back up to the surface.

The boys and I walk out of the motel as Dean opens the car door and Sam and I toss a duffel in. I look over at Dean and noticed that he looked upset and I give him a small frown. "Look, we're not gonna save everybody." I said to him as I placed a hand on his shoulder. "I know." Dean mutters and I patted his shoulder. The two of us stared at each other when a voice calls out to us.

"Sam, Dean, (y/n)."

We look over and see Andrea walking up to us with Lucas. "Hey." Dean said once I remove my hand off of his shoulder. "We're glad we caught you. We just, um, we made you lunch for the road." Andrea said gesturing to Lucas, who's carrying a tray of sandwiches. "Lucas insisted on making the sandwiches himself." Andrea said, smiling.

"Can I give it to them now?" Lucas asked and I smiled. I'm glad the kid's talking again. "Of course." Andrea said as she smiles and kisses his head. "Come on, Lucas, let's load this into the car." Dean said and he and Lucas began to load up the car while Sam and I turn to Andrea.

"How you holding up?" Sam asked her. "It's just gonna take a long time to sort through everything, you know?" She replied. "Andrea, I'm sorry." I said. "Yeah, me too." Sam said but Andrea shakes her head. "You saved my son. I can't ask for more than that. Dad loved me. He loved Lucas. No matter what he did, I just have to hold on to that." She said to us.

I nodded at her as I see Dean putting the sandwiches in the car. "All right, if you're gonna be talking now, this is a very important phrase, so I want you to repeat it one more time." Dean said to Lucas. "Zeppelin rules!" Lucas exclaims and I shake my head and smile at this as Dean said. "That's right. Up high."

He holds his hand up for a high-five. Lucas obliges, grinning. "You take care of your mom, okay?" He said to Lucas. "All right." Lucas said and Andrea comes up and kisses Dean, and I start to feel that familiar feeling in my chest again.

I bite my lips, like that might hold back the feeling, once Andrea breaks the kiss and looks up at Dean. "Thank you." Dean stands there for a minute, looks at me for a second, then scratches his head and goes around the car. "Sam, (y/n), move your asses. We're gonna run out of daylight before we hit the road." Dean said as he gets in the car, then Sam. Dean starts the engine as I get on my bike and start the engine on that.

We smiled and waved at Andrea and Lucas then we headed off.
