doesn't hurt to try
"Bunny! Bunny! Wake up!"
A hand shook my shoulder. My whole body was shaking and my eyes burst open to see a pair of light brown pupils staring worriedly at me. I gasped, rolling onto the side and grabbing my leg to feel the intense pain shooting from my foot to my calf.
Scrunching my face together, Jay made fists with his hands and pounded on my calves.
"Ow!"
"Can you stretch your leg?" he asked, sitting on the floor by my bed. "Your muscles are tense, and you were screaming."
"It's cramp. I didn't even realize I was.... Screaming," I paused, my mind going back to why I was screaming.
I was running away from the goons in high heels that pounded against the ground, wearing a red coat that was no longer in my possession. A man was running after me, his face distorted in fits of anger while he yelled my name repeatedly.
"Hey." Jay snapped his fingers in front of my face. "Hello to Bunny?"
Snapping back to reality, I began my morning routine with an additional painful limp. Heading to the kitchen, Chester said I reminded him of Maxwell.
"Oh yeah, why does he have a limp?" I asked, Chester shrugging to my question as if to say he did not know. "Did he fall down from a tree a something?"
"Something to do with Champion," Chester replied. "No idea. He doesn't talk about it, but Champion does say sometimes that Max has a defected leg because of him. That's why Max doesn't go into the field anymore, he has his own team do it for him."
"God," a snappy voice arrived, Royal entering the kitchen with five layers of clothing on his shoulders.
"Good morning," I greeted. He stared at me.
"Not a good morning, thank you very much. I had nightmares of a naked me through the warehouse, ripped off my dignity," he answered grumpily, adjusting his topcoat.
I'd see Royal go through phases like this for years to come. It was something I found amusing, considering I would go through such phases, too.
I announced that training would go on as per norm, asking Royal if he was hot under those many layers of clothes. He ignored my question.
"I heard you screaming," Royal said, his green eyes looking up and narrowing at me. "Why? Trauma?"
"She had a cramp," Jay answered for me, placing a mug on the table and I glanced at it before sneakily trying to grab it to drain a little bit of the coffee out. "I see whatcha doing!"
"It's not part of your meal plan," I told him, frowning at him.
"I saved you this morning," he pointed out and I thought about it for a split second. "You drink half, I drink half. So, it doesn't go to waste."
"I'm allergic to Robusta beans!" I told him. "I get dizzy, and my head goes round and round, then I need to run for like, three hours!"
He frowned. "Sounds like it's cocaine, not coffee."
After arguing with Jay and finally allowing him to take half a cup but with added milk, the elevator behind us dinged and the doors opened. Everyone gasped and Aro froze, Beebo wheeling out after him.
"What?" he asked.
"What do you mean what?" Andy asked back and I wondered when he popped up. "What are you doing out of the basement?"
Aro's face softened. He shoved his hands into his pockets, walking towards where we stood. "I'm here to get a banana and grace you with my presence."
"Wow, Aro. I'm honoured," Royal muttered, stabbing his hotdog with a fork.
"What do you have up your arse?" Aro asked, grabbing a banana and peeling it. "Is it because you walked around naked yesterday?"
"Aro," Jay's warned, giving him a glare. Aro took in a deep breath, Jay patting Royal lovingly on the head. "You take as much time as you need to process whatever you went through, Royal."
"I'll be in bed under fifteen blankets and no one should even think of bothering me today!" Royal said hotly, shoving the remains of his plate into his mouth before stalking away, his bedroom door slamming behind him.
"One less person to train today," I said under my breath, turning to look at Jay. "You first!"
Jay replied that he knew he'd be first – he was always first. He'd began planning what he'd do after breakfast. He'd run a few laps and then come back in a jiffy to tell me when he was ready. Then we'd play shape charades! Another road of fun, fun, fun shape charades!
I gave him a excited thumbs up before he left, turning around just to see Aro with a banana in his mouth, looking like he wanted to say something.
"Then it's my turn, right?" Andy asked. "Bunny, how about today we run up a cliff? That'd be nice!"
"Where are we going to get a cliff?" I asked and he told me it was my job to figure it out. "Oh! How about an obstacle course? And I time your speed while carrying heavy items?"
Andy frowned, looking down on his biceps. "I don't have muscles."
"Time to train, big boy." I patted his arm.
"If he gets an obstacle course, I get an obstacle course," Chester interrupted. "Do I? Get an obstacle course?"
"How about we have a collaborative obstacle course?" I asked, struggling to think of something for the both of them. "And we brainstorm first?"
A series of exclamation erupted through the kitchen.
"We can make a cliff from blankets!"
"I think I need heavy weights to see if I can move it with my throat."
"Aro isn't going to be very happy about it." Andy turned to Aro who was staring blankly into space, his banana still in his mouth. "Beebo is broke, Aro. His story turned evil and he didn't say 'I love you' before he left the room last night."
Aro choked on the banana, coughing it out when a beeping light emitted by the robot that heard its own name. Beebo wheeled himself into the kitchen.
"I, uh, must have downloaded the wrong story," Aro murmured and I tried to hide a laugh when Beebo spoke.
"Liar," Beebo said. Andy teached down to pat Beebo's head, Aro glaring at the robot before dragging a hand in a zipping motion across his lips. Beebo got the message and wheeled away.
"I fed him a lot of data last night. He's just wonky." Aro's smile was unnatural when a loud ecstatic voice came from outside. We all rushed to the source. Jay was on the grassy field, proudly presenting to us what he just did.
"I did it! I did it! I'm a..." Jay took a deep breath. "A PYRAMID!"
Indeed, Jay Holder was a pyramid.
All sides covered.
"Wooohooooo!" Jay yelled out. We all clapped enthusiastically. "MILESTONE ACHIEVED!"
"Good job, Jay!" I called out, pumping a fist into the air. "How'd you do that?"
"A lotta believin' and prayin'. Momma told me I could be anything I want. I wanted to be a pyramid and now I am a pyramid." He went back to standing, breathing heavily. "I'm tired."
His suit was soaked with sweat, the material turning a dark color. I patted his shoulder.
"Alright. You can put this in the laundry."
"What's Aro doing here and not back in the basement? Do you need more bananas? Did we run out?"
"Way to talk to me like I'm not here, Nana," Aro replied.
"You never stay out this long. Anyway, whateverrrrrr. Can I call off Shape Charades? I'm deciding in my head whether I should watch Bridgerton or House of Gambits as a celebratory reward."
"You can do whatever you want!" I said, unzipping his suit. Jay stepped out of it in his house shorts. Unlike Royal, he was not fazed about being topless. "Go!"
"Off I go!" he cried, disappearing up the stairs.
I felt two pairs of eyes on me, Chester and Andy chorusing on how they wanted to watch Briderton and House of Gambits, too.
"Why should you get what Nana gets?" I asked, frowning.
"We... Fine," Chester said glumly, and my shoulders dropped.
"Fine, fine, fine." I paused. "Today, we shall brainstorm and prep for the obstacle course! Besides, I think an obstacle course would take time. Uh, yes. Aro?"
Aro had his hand in the air, waiting for me to notice him.
"So... when's my turn?" he asked slowly, Chester and Andy's jaw dropped. I held back my surprise.
"You'll be after whatever brainstorm session we have. Unless, of course, you want to join us! It'll be fun!"
"Okay. No to joining. Just... I'll see you when it's my turn."
