Chapter 19: Housewarming

As Kara’s powers returned the months rolled by quickly.  She and Barry spent New Year’s with family at Joe’s house and then their first Valentine’s Day together since he had been pulled into the Speed Force before they got the chance the previous year.  Alura had discovered that the black dust was indeed a remnant from Krypton and set out to learn if there was any more of it on Earth while also working with Alex to create a formula that could combat the effects it had on Kryptonians.  The threat of the Worldkillers was still unsubstantiated even though Clark had informed Barry and Kara everything he had learned from Zod while disseminating with claims that it all came from the Book of Rao.

In the weeks preceding their moving day, Barry and Kara had packed up their belongings at both his and her apartment and moved them to Joe’s house where they were temporarily staying.  Kara was at Cat Co. working on a story when Cat called her into her office.  Kara knew something was up with her boss as when she stepped in; Cat was tapping her pen on her desk while staring blankly at her computer screen.

“You wanted to see me, Ms. Grant?”

Kara’s words snapped Cat out  of her focus, and although she was slightly startled she quickly regained her composure.

“Yes…Kara; sit down.  I have something I’ve been meaning to discuss with you.”

Kara was instantly worried at the tone in her boss’ voice.  She had never heard Cat Grant sound this nervous or shaken before.  Something told her that whatever Cat was going to say, had ramifications that affected Cat Co., but Kara as well.

“Ms. Grant…are you okay?”

“I’m fine Kara.  Do you remember what I told you the day I asked you what you wanted to do with your life?  Where you wanted to go with Cat Co.?”

“Yes Ms. Grant, you told me to dive in.  You showed me my application and the word reporter written on it.  You said you knew then that this was what I was meant to do.”

“I knew you were listening.  Good.  Well I’ve decided to take my own advice.”

“I’m not sure I understand.”

“You will in a moment.  But first, I know you’re moving to Central City to be with your husband and I wanted to give you a choice.  Despite the two hour driving distance between Central and National, I know you still want to report for Cat Co.”

“I do.”

“With that in mind, you can retain your job here and e-mail your articles in from home or…”

“Or?”

“I’ve purchased Central City Picture News.  It…”

Concern ran through Kara’s mind at Cat’s announcement and she worried for all the people who worked for C.C.P.N., including Iris.  She knew Cat wouldn’t shut the paper down, but there was the possibility that she’d hire a new staff.  Cat immediately caught on to Kara’s feelings and spoke to assuage them.

“No one is going to get fired; Kara.  And C.C.P.N. or the Citizen as I’m thinking of renaming it is still going to operate as it always has, but with the backing of Cat Co.  Your other option is to join the staff there.”

“In what capacity?”

“As a reporter, assistant to the Editor in Chief, the P.R. Director.  Whichever you wish.  He and I have already discussed bringing you on to the staff.  And your articles will be published in Central’s paper and Cat Co. Magazine.”

“Ms. Grant…I…”

“You deserve this Kara.  C.C.P.N. was in danger of folding and I value a good news agency when I see one.”

“But what about you Ms. Grant?  You said you’ve decided to take your own advice.  What does that mean?”

“I’m moving on from Cat Co.  I’m taking a leave of absence and leaving Olsen in charge.  We both need to dive.”

Throughout the rest of the day, Kara’s mind was on the offer Cat just presented her with.  The commute from her and Barry’s new apartment in Central City was not insurmountable for Supergirl but working for C.C.P.N. or the Citizen if it was going to be renamed presented her with an opportunity to work closer to her new home.  In the end, she already knew what her decision was going to be and she couldn’t wait to tell Barry as soon as she sees him.  But this also isn’t the only change she’s about to discover as she returns to her apartment to complete her packing.

Alex, Winn, M’Gann, J’onn and Alura were already at the apartment when Kara arrived after work.  James was going to come and help but he had a late meeting with Cat to discuss his new position at Cat Co.  He wasn’t needed as everything Kara was taking was packed and ready to go.  All that was left was her furniture, and though she’d be taking her desk and nightstand, she had for months considered renting a storage unit or selling the bed, couch and dining set.  Fortunately J’onn had come up with a solution that benefitted both her and M’Gann.

“Your last few days living in National are up now, Kara.  How does it feel?”

“Strange…exciting…so many emotions Alex.  So much of my life has been here and now…Barry and I are really starting our lives together when we move into the new loft.  I’m still not sure what to do with the last of my furniture yet.  I have a few days left on the lease to decide.”

“I think I can help with that decision Kara.”

“How J’onn?  What are you thinking?”

“In the months since M’Gann arrived she and I started looking for a place for her to live.  At first I thought she’d move in with me, perhaps temporarily.  But it wouldn’t be ideal and she can’t spend her life at the D.E.O. so while you were at work we went and spoke to your landlord.  He mentioned that this apartment will be available in a month.”

“And…?”

“If all goes as planned; M’Gann will be moving in here.  I’ll be covering the rent until she finds a job and having some furniture already in place will be beneficial.”

Kara was ecstatic that her now former apartment would potentially already have a new tenant and that it was going to be one of her new friends.  But most importantly it meant that J’onn and M’Gann wouldn’t have to be separated as they continue to build on their familial bond.   As soon as the last few days in her National City apartment ended, Joe offered to let her store the rest of her belongings in one of his spare rooms.  Barry had spent several days setting the apartment up how he and Kara had discussed while she closed out her life in National with a mission for the D.E.O.  The day they officially moved in the couple each had a surprise for the other.

“Well Kara…ready to see our new place?”

“More than ready; Barry.  You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for this.”

“Oh I think I can imagine it.  Allow me…”

Barry unlocked the door, pushing it open so Kara could get her first glimpse into how it had been set up and as she took her first step, he maneuvered in front of her at a fraction of his speed.

“Barry, what are you doing?  I want to see…”

“And you will…but you can’t deny me one last tradition that I haven’t yet performed as your husband.”

“What tradition?”

“Carrying my wife across the threshold of our apartment.”

Kara rolled her eyes while smiling at Barry with his need to follow certain Earth wedding traditions.  She didn’t say anything but she found it adorable.  She also remembered Lois telling her once that Clark had done the same thing when they had moved in together.

“Then you better get to it, Mr. Allen.  But for the record…you’re still a dork.”

Barry could only chuckle as he scooped Kara up bridal style with one arm supporting her legs and another around her waist as she leaned her head on his shoulder.  Having gotten used to carrying Kara at super speed, he took a few awkward steps inside before kicking the door shut with his foot then making his own joke.

“At least I’m still your dork.  So…take a look around.  Tell me what you think?”

Kara was back on her feet as Barry moved to stand by their couch.  He had so much he wanted to say but let Kara take it all in.  The living room had their wedding photo framed on the wall above a small section that would serve as their shared office.  Both of their desks were pushed together facing each other.  Everything was set up just how they had agreed and Kara felt her heart skip a beat as her feelings threatened to explode.

“Kara?”

“This is perfect Barry.  A perfect mix of the both of us.  You clearly didn’t use your powers to do all of this.”

“Nope…Cisco, Harry, Joe and I worked for days on getting this just right.  This is just the living areas though, go check out the bedroom.”

Kara was downright giddy to see what their bedroom looked like as she ran towards it.  Inside were more photos of them from the engagement party, their first date, and on her nightstand, a hand drawn sketch she hadn’t seen before.  Sitting down on the bed, she slowly picked up the frame as her eyes got misty and Barry sat down next to her.  The sketch was from Christmas Eve.

“When…when did you draw this?”

“While you were sleeping after I proposed.  You looked so beautiful in that moment I couldn’t help but capture it on paper.  Your navy blue dress, perfectly matching your blue eyes…”

“Barry…”

Kara couldn’t find the words to describe how much this meant to her.  Barry had caught her emotions perfectly as she remembered the tears and her hands clasped over her mouth as he opened the ring box.  Feeling all those emotions again she threw her arms around his neck and planted a passionate kiss on his lips with the framed sketch between them.  While the couple was looking forward to their future, it was the housewarming party a few days later where they got their first taste of things beginning to change and not all of the changes were for the better.

The guests for the party included Cisco and Gypsy, his new girlfriend from Earth-19, Caitlin, Jesse Wells, Wally, Dick and Barbara, John and Lyla, and Oliver with Felicity arriving late.  While the atmosphere was jovial for the most part, everyone could sense the tension brewing between Oliver and Felicity.  While Kara and the girls convened in the dining room, Barry and the rest of the guys were in the living room with a round of beers.

“All right Oliver, spill it.”

“You think I’m hiding something Barry?”

“You’re always hiding something Oliver.  It’s second nature to you.  But we all hide something to protect the ones we love.  So…what’s going on between you and Felicity?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Oliver…”

“Leave it alone Barry!”

Oliver got up from the couch with his beer and walked out onto the balcony.  His outburst was expected as the room fell silent.  Even Kara held her question for Felicity as she was about to ask what was going on.  Barry looked over to Diggle who in turn just shook his head; neither he nor Lyla knew what had happened.  Sighing, Barry got up and followed Oliver to the balcony, hoping to apologize.  When he stepped outside, his friend was leaning over the balcony railing, beer still in hand but only a third of it gone.

“You sure know how to choose a place to live Barry.  The view you’ve got here is incredible.”

“Didn’t choose it for the view; Oliver.  I chose it for Kara.  It’s concealed just enough for her to come and go as Supergirl without our neighbors getting suspicious.”

“I guess I can see that.  So how do you do it?”

“Do what?”

“You and Kara make this look so easy.  Being in a relationship, supporting each other through the good and the bad.”

“I wish I could say that it is easy, Oliver.  A year ago I was technically dead for six months.  I think about all the powers Kara has and I’m still just a man.  As human as you and Digg are compared to her.”

“Come on Barry, we both know that’s not true.  To be honest, I envy your abilities sometimes.  But…”

“What?”

“Felicity and I…we’re…she’s…”

“Pregnant?”

“No.  We called it off.  I’m not even sure she’s going to stay with the team after what I did.”

“What did you do?”

“I got injured on a mission recently.  While I was lying in that hospital bed, and having my injuries described as a car accident to the press…”

“So they wouldn’t connect Mayor Oliver Queen to the Green Arrow.”

“…yeah…I proposed to Felicity.  She…didn’t take it well.”

“She said no.  I think I can understand why.  I never told Kara this, but I thought she’d say no when I proposed.  Our lives are in constant danger Oliver.  Our loved ones can be used and hurt just to get to us.  You know that better than anyone.”

“So do you.”

“Right, the point is that Felicity loves you.  I just don’t think she was ready for that.  Give her time.  Things will work out.”

“I hope you’re right.”

Oliver apologized for his actions before storming out of the apartment.  He hadn’t meant to go off like that, but he didn’t want to air his problems for everyone to hear at what was meant to be a happy occasion.  When the friends stepped back inside the party was winding down.  Oliver, John, Lyla and Felicity had to catch a flight back to Star City in the morning.  Likewise Dick and Barbara had to head back to Bludhaven and Burnside.  As the guests departed, Barry and Kara were left alone cleaning up before retaking their place on the couch, with her leaning her head against his shoulder.

“So…did you have fun with the guys Barry?”

“It was interesting to say the least.”

“Oliver told you, didn’t he?”

“About proposing to Felicity and her saying no?  Yeah.”

“She told me as well.  It hurt her to say no.  But I can understand why she did it.”

“They’ll get through this.  They’re both strong people, if not a little stubborn.”

Kara nervously chuckled even though she knew Barry was right.  With the night drawing to a close, they made their way to their bedroom.  All was not well as Barry slept peacefully though Kara would have her first nightmare in months and it centered on the black clad figure she had seen walking away the last time.  Her eyes quickly sprang open as this time she got her first view of the woman’s face.  It was her own, and as she didn’t want to wake Barry, she slipped out of their bed and into the living room.  The first news reports of the day were just beginning when she turned on the television.

Kara didn’t expect what she saw as the cameras cut to a patch of sand in the Nevada desert with a message burned into the ground.  The next moment her phone started ringing with Clark on the other end.

“It’s a calling card; Clark.”

“I know, Kara.  Bring us the children of El.  One guess who the message came from.”

“The Worldkillers.”

“They’re here, and this is going to be a war.  We’re going to need all the help we can get.”

“Somehow I think we’ll have it, even if it puts our loved ones in danger.”

“You’re worried about Barry?”

“Wouldn’t you be; if it was Lois?”

Clark answered with an affirmative as he hung up the phone.  They both had to be prepared for the impending battle.  But she didn’t tell Clark about her nightmare and put on a brave face as Barry joined her in the living room.

“Bring us the children on El?”

“The Worldkillers are on Earth, Barry.  A conflict is coming, we have to face it.”
