Locked Up (Part 1)

"Guard 1154" An officer barked out, as he handed reports to each guard. A yellow piece of paper, thin and cheap, but has the power to decide which prisoner you will be assigned to for the rest of the year. The objective, don't let them escape. Seems easy, but these guards are being assigned the dangerous of the dangerous, the ruthless and cold-hearted with tales that are hushed up.
Upon hearing their number, a blonde head perked up among the others with a big smile, already in contrast from the rest of the crowd who wore weary expressions.

"Here! S-sir!" She quickly added in with respect as she marched up to him, holding her hands behind her back and standing straight.

"Good luck" the officer softly spoke, his eyes full of concern and sadness as he handed her the paper. Except, hers wasn't a boring shade of yellow. Hers was red, like fire, like blood, the color of war. Stiffly, she walked back to her position as thoughts and possibilities whirled in her head, others casting her with sad eyes.

"What the hell does that mean?" Her fellow guard, James, whispered out of the corner of his mouth gesturing to her red paper as he held his ordinary yellow sheet in his hand.

"I dunno" she replied, staring vacantly ahead.

.....................

Several guards have looked at the name written in small hard-to-find  letters in random places on the paper. Some gave obnoxious shrugs, claiming their prisoner was a 'piece of cake'. These were usually the guys who failed immediately.

Others merely read the name, stuffing it in their pocket while they continued on with their day. A few here and there were a bit shaken by their prisoner. The room filled with chattering uniformed men and women who were currently comparing their prisoners.

But one, sat in the corner of the room panicking and reading the name over and over.

"It's not that bad, Kara" James tried comforting her, wincing as she whirled around with wide eyes.

"Not- what?! It's Lena Luthor!" She shrieked waving the paper, causing everybody to turn and face her. In seconds everyone crowded around her, giving her pats on the back and final hugs as if she was never going to come back.

"Attention guards" Everybody fell silent, awaiting the following announcement.
"When we call you by your number, please report to your cell. Today we begin the first day of your mission"

Kara slid against the wall to the floor, covering her face as she groaned.

"Kara, I'm up. Good luck" he gave her a quick pat before reporting to his cell.

"Wait, no, don't leave me!" Then before she could even get out another word, she heard it.

"Guard 1154" Everybody turned to look at her, shouting things that were supposed to motivate her as she gave the man her red slip with shaking hands.

"Last time I saw this was when Lex Luthor was here" the officer muttered as he stamped it. Then, with wide eyes he realized it was Lena Luthor.
"Don't make the same mistake. You cannot let Lena escape as her brother had"

"Y-yes, sir" Kara managed to croak out as she stuffed the slip in her pocket, straightening her back and wearing a determined expression as she began to walk down the corridors to Lena's cell.

As she walked, she saw a few guards already standing beside their assigned cell, some gave her a nod and sympathetic smile as she passed. Quickly, she returned the nod, hurrying her pace.

Then she slowed down to a walk as she found the cell awaiting for her. It was separated from the others, where the others had cells right next door, but Lena was isolated. Her cell number glowing red while the others were a pasty yellow.

Taking a deep breath, she took her stance beside her cell with her hands behind her back, facing front.

An alarm went off.

Somebody has already failed.

......................

"Kara, he's heading your way, over" James shouted as he skidded down a corridor, having lost him.

"Copy that" she replied, moving silently with her gun in hand. It's moments like these where she is able to remain calm. 'For once' Alex would usually remark as Kara would talk about this at family gatherings, Alex her loyal and fiercely loving sister with a soon-to-be-wed girlfriend.

A slight noise from behind her, pulled her from her thoughts as she whirled around tasing the man in front of her. With a thud he fell, a twitching body lay at Kara's feet. Taking deep breaths, she refused to look at the body as she waited for the rest of the team to return him to his cell.

............................

Weeks have passed, Kara sat on her comfy couch, laughing as they sat about telling stories from these weeks. It's been a while for the group of friends since Kara's new assignment cutting in. Today being one of her first days off, James on the other hand has had a handful compared to Kara seeing that his prisoner wasn't as dangerous. Though he seems dangerous looking.

"I don't even know where he's from, he's got these eyes that keep changing colors and can shift his look depending on his mood. One day I find an angel the next I find the devil himself" The group chuckled at this as James laughed a bit himself, before turning to Kara and asking,

"So, how's the Luthor?"

"You got assigned Lena Luthor!" Maggie and Alex gaped, along with Winn since he held the job of monitoring the cameras while Maggie figured out where criminals who ran off (if they do) and Alex catches them. Of course with a huge organized team who occupy the same jobs in order to enforce this.

"Yes.." Kara muttered sinking into the couch.

"How is she?" Maggie asked curiously

"I heard she's a good one, if you know what I- ow!" Winn was cut off by a quick hit on the head from Alex who gave him a steely look.

"I actually don't know" she shrugged. Her cell was the only cell that had a layer of darkness that blocked the view of Lena Luthor from the curious guard. Though she was curious, she knew there was a button that she guiltily looked at that she was sure would allow her to look at Lena, but fear stopped her.

"Well that's a loss" Winn muttered under his breath. It was true, even though Lena is a criminal, many have remarked of her killer looks.

Maybe, that's what drove Kara to finally push the button. It was a late shift, Kara required to work around the clock, only allowed short breaks in between as Winn promised to watch the cameras before she was sent back out of fear of failing and letting Lena loose. The blue electric button taunting her, her mind slightly clouded by sleepiness as she took a look around seeing the empty corridors and pushed the button.

To her surprise, the criminal sat against a white wall, calmly reading a book. The room was bland, with all white walls. Contrast to other cells, Lena's had a collection of books. Finally, as Kara held her breath the Luthor glanced up her jade eyes meeting Kara's electric eyes.

Kara opened her mouth then closed it, realizing she didn't know what to say. Winn was right, she's gorgeous. Her looks killer, quite literally. She had dark hair that fell elegantly on her shoulders, her legs crossed out in front of her with all her features focused on the book in front of her.

"Is there a problem?" The sudden sound of a voice startled her. Realizing it was Lena's made it worse.

"N-no" Kara stuttered out "No" she repeated more firmly, straightening her posture.

"Then why are you staring?" A slight smirk appeared on her face as she fully looked up from her book at Kara's startled expression.

"I'm curious"

"Of what?" Lena asked softly, in such a tone that Kara wasn't expecting. A voice that lured her in, convincing her to lower to a sitting position facing Lena opposite of the cell.

"Of the infamous Lena Luthor, of course" she smiled a little, though it disappeared as Lena did not smile back but continued to read.
"I-Uh.. I love that book" Kara commented awkwardly, gesturing to the book in her hands.

"I find it typically dull" Lena muttered, continuing to read it.

"No,no, it's really good" Lena, now interested, puts the book down in her lap and looks at Kara.

"And why is that?"

By dawn, Kara has finished retelling the entirety of the book to a fully awake Lena while Kara's eyes began to droop.

"I suggest you go to sleep" Lena remarked seeing the state of the guard.

"No, I can't I'm-" Kara yawned, stretching.

"Scared that I'll escape?" Silence followed. Kara slowly got up, guiltily looking down at her feet. She didn't understand why she felt guilty. Lena was a criminal. It wasn't as if she looked hurt, or maybe she just wished to keep it hidden as she returned to her book.

"Goodnight, Ms. Luthor" Kara muttered pressing the button.

Lena didn't sleep.

...............................

Kara pressed the button once again. Sometimes she'll find her asleep, sometimes she'll be wide awake reading a book. It was like routine for the two by now. Nobody knew of the interactions that occurred between the two. Though Winn was director of the cameras, he usually was asleep at that time.

Tonight, Lena was awake. They were once again having another conversation. At first all their conversations were focused on books, then as they began to get comfortable they drifted to other subjects. Some deep conversations, some light-hearted, sometimes Lena would read some of her favorite excerpts from the book she's currently reading to Kara.

"How come I find you awake and sometimes your asleep?" Kara questioned. Kara has lots of questions of a lot of things, something Lena has realized with only a few visits.

"Well, in case you haven't noticed, I can't really tell when it's day or night" Lena gestured to the cell with a hint of amusement in her voice, but Kara didn't find it funny at all.

"Lena, how long have you been in this cell?"

"Since I was a teenager" Lena merely shrugged off Kara's big worried eyes that followed her as she reached over for a new book.

"You can ask" Lena interrupted. It was a question everybody asks when they hear of Lena Luthor.

"It's fine you don't have to-"

"No. I want you to know" Lena replied, looking Kara in the eyes.

"Fine, so, why are you here. Why for so long? No offense, but you don't seem like a criminal type" Kara let out all in one breath.

"Thanks, I really try not to seem like a 'criminal type'" Kara blushed, murmuring a sorry, though Lena only smiled as she continued.
"I was born into this cell. Well, not literally. As you know, Lex Luthor, my older brother is one of the most famous criminals known for escaping this very cell. So, once they discovered I was his sister, I took his place."

"Why?" Kara asked with ferocity. Why would they put someone innocent in place of someone who is guilty.

"I don't know, Kara. I don't need to know and I honestly don't care. This is my life now, and it's his fault" Lena's smile has disappeared by now, a cold look set into her features as she retreated back to the comforts of her books.
"Goodnight Kara"

Kara only pushed the button, quickly running down to where she found Winn facedown on his desk with computer screens surrounding him.

"Wake up" Kara shook him awake, quickly he sat up.

"Please don't fire me" he whimpered out, smiling goofily as he realized it was only Kara.

"I need you to find me anything and everything on Lena Luthor"

...........................

"Kara, what happened?"

"Nothing, I just-"

"Oh my god did she threaten you or.. or-" Winn sat down beside her with two cups of coffee in hand.

"No, no it's just. Winn, I don't think she's bad. She's innocent, and she's-"

"I saw you two lovebirds. Talking to each other almost every night, you checking up on her when she's sleeping." Winn smirked, Kara objected to his absurd-sounding claims, nevertheless her face turning to a light pink shade. Thankfully, the room was dark.

.......

"Okay, I found a video of when Lena was taken away" Kara pushed her chair over beside Winn, watching intently as he played the video.

Two bulky men and a thin man with a tight suit behind them, approached Lena's door. Forcibly knocking on the door. After a pause, a teenage Lena opened the door with a big smile that quickly faded away as her eyes flickered between the two men.

"What's going on?" A girl wrapped her arms around Lena's waist, resting her chin on her shoulder.

(Kara looked down into her lap, Winn gave her a curious glance)

"Lena Luthor, correct?" The thin man spoke, glancing up from his clipboard.

"Yeah"

"We'd like to speak to you in private, please step out" Reluctantly, Lena obeyed, closing the door behind her giving the girl an assuring smile.

In moments, Lena was bound in cuffs, thrashing and screaming in the arms of the bulky men who dragged her to the ominous dark car. She was quickly gagged, and taken away.

The video ends.

"She has no choice" Kara whispered, her eyes filled with determination.

"Kara.."

"Continue searching."

.................

Will work on part 2 as soon as I can. Hope you enjoyed part 1! Sorry if this was too long for you.
