"Your relationship is getting stronger, but you have a lot more work to do" I nodded, the date I took Athena to did its job, not only between the two of us, but also for the chain. And yet, here she is, unconscious again, for over fourteen hours now, while I woke up five hours ago. "I don't understand why she doesn't wake up, she barely left me any energy, she shouldn't be so tired?" I really didn't understand, she should have rested already, according to the coach, she hasn't used her strength for more than ten minutes.
"Athena's power is almost unknown, Junkook, all that Miss Panaria and I have found in the archives is repeated research and conclusions. But apparently her power is extremely difficult to control and the Guardians who possess it, or havn't been able to control it at all, or they succumbed to her power by self-immolation" the witch wasn't telling me anything that Athena and I hadn't already read.
"Coach, is it possible for Athena to have more than one power?" I asked, thinking over the vision she had shown me. "What do you mean?" I told him what she showed me. "I don't know how to explain it, but it was as if one moment I was this king, and the next I was watching them from somewhere on high. But all the time I had the feeling that Athena was the fairy and that something was pulling me to stay in the vision, to see more, to give myself to him and not to leave him" this feeling had not yet left me, I really wanted to return and stay there.
"That sounds more like Mykena's power to me than pyrokinetic. I haven't heard of a Guardian wielding more than one power. But there are records of water guardians using water to visualize their thoughts, for a shield, maybe the five elements don't are just forces" he looked thoughtfully at Athena, as did I. "The five elements are the basis of all the others" we both looked at Miss Parania, who was approaching with a book in her hand.
"Look at this" she handed the book to the trainer and he opened it to the marked page."When the head elder found them, the five sisters had shrunk like a litter of puppies, afraid of being touched, taken away from their mother. I remember it like yesterday, their eyes shone differently from ours, but they looked like us and yet. When he tried to touch and take one of the sisters, a wind came out of nowhere and the elder was blown away. I also remember the fear of the others, the five sisters were nothing our tribe had ever seen."
"What is this?" I asked and Miss Panaria looked at me intently. "The story of the first Guardians" she answered, I had never heard of it, I don't remember it being mentioned in our lessons at all. "Look at the bottom" she prompted and I went back to reading. "On the next page" she prompted us and the coach turned the page.
"Venus was the strongest of all, she was also the smallest. She seemed so unhappy, so few things pleased her, so few of us she allowed near her. The lack of control over her powers frightened her, terrified her, and she had begun to isolated herself from the others, even from her sisters. Until he came along, Mars, the son of the elder, the fourth in line, always underestimated, somehow always isolated from his brothers, the two seemed to share one soul."
"He made her smile, play, their laughter often rang through the village until late, always so ringing, so joyful. They somehow grew together, strengthening the bond between them, what irony, Mars and Venus, the beginning of man and woman , these two children have become a strong inseparable couple."
"Her sisters also found their place, their mates, started families, their children played on par with ours, although just like their mothers, they were different, showing similar potential to their mothers" the coach snorted and flipped a few more pages to the next marked place.
"My father died, but what he started must be finished. I remember the day they appeared, the Sakrates, a warlike race, they were not like us, they wanted to kill, to destroy. The five sisters faced them, wanting to protect the village and our people. Their strength was indescribable, even though I was only twelve years old at the time, I remember how each one of them stood in front, covering our people with their bodies, fighting, their strength repelled the Sakrates, but after the battle two of them were so wounded and exhausted that they died."
"We no longer had the strong light of the one that healed us, nor the one that made the sky weep. Heart and Water had perished, lost forever to us and to the world. Their sisters continued the fight, the daughters of Heart and Water took their places on the battle line. Always at the front, always defending the weak, fighting the defilers."
"I remember how the elder asked Wind, Earth and Fire to train their heirs, how their fathers initially opposed, gave in to the wishes of their wives. Their powers were those who guarded the settlement, our people, we began to call them Guardians, and their husbands Knights ,they were the first.I remember once Venus, the guardian of fire, showed me the past, her flames playing, telling stories from before our people became a tribe, I also remember how Mars, her husband, sat meekly by her side, resting his forehead on her temple, closing eyes, smiling, as if he didn't need to see the pictures to know what they depicted"
"The Sakrats attacked periodically, though our Guardians repelled them each time. Until one day He appeared, bigger, stronger, different from all the others. Venus could barely withstand his power, forming a flaming shield, she took all the damage ,while her shield protected us powerless. The younger Guardians fought on all fronts,Wind and Earth stood apart, one injured,Wind tried to help Earth, while Fire fed the shield, drawing on the last of her strength. Then Mars stood beside her, putting his hand on her shoulder, calm, smiling, as if we were not fighting for our lives."
"The earth was burning, everything was burning, he seemed to be giving her his power and she was using it to fuel the shield around us. Their bodies were burning, but they stood there, in front, together, smiling lovingly at each other, not giving way and step back. Their power was incredible, majestic, subduing. They pushed Him away, but they, like Heart and Wind, abandoned us after the battle."
"But it's been millennia since then!" the trainer shook his head and I looked at Athena. "The first Guardians are just a legend, even if this diary is true, it's not possible that after all this time the power could just be reborn from nowhere and in the same dimensions, right?" the trainer may have been right, but I know what I saw and definitely I'm sure Athena was the one who showed it to me.
If she was a direct descendant of the First, then her power was probably limitless and took many forms, which would explain the vision she had shown me. Was it possible that, through these visions, her predecessor was showing her what her power was, maybe how to deal with it, how to control and direct it? If so, did these Venus and Mars really exist? No one knew for sure how the Guardians came to be, we Knights were quite ordinary, the only thing that distinguished us from other men was our relationship with these women.
"Is it possible to check the genealogy of Athena, could she be a direct descendant of the Firsts?" I asked, speaking my thoughts out loud. "If that's the case, then it's Tyra too, she doesn't have an active physical element." Miss Parania shook her head. "According to the diary, their children didn't have either, they only resembled their mothers' powers, if it's true and Athena is a direct heir to Fire, then maybe we could find archives for her, it's worth a try" yes, that's right coach ,Miss Parania may not listen to me, but she will definitely listen to you!
The two continued to argue, but my thoughts were behind the glass, in the hospital room. Athena didn't look tired like she had in her previous seizures. Perhaps her vision still held her captive? If it was true that she was the heir of this Venus, if she was really as strong as the First Fire Guardian, or at least had close to her powers, was I capable enough to be her knight?
The more I thought, the more I wanted to slap myself. I felt insecure, where was my self-esteem now? My confidence? How could I suddenly be so weak compared to this tiny thing in bed? I was so sure of my powers, of my ability to control her, and look at me now? Her last attempt left me unconscious, she drained my strength like I was a glass of water. Still, she had enough strength to stop and let me live, even though I'm sure she could really hurt me physically if she chose to. Wasn't that exactly what the diary said? Mars felt the power of Venus and was physically injured, dying with her from exhaustion and their wounds?
Was I really her energy or was she the one sharing her powers with me? Why does it sound like the latter to me? What exactly are you capable of, spark, and am I capable of enduring whatever lies ahead until you learn to control your fire? I know I have no choice, but is this what keeps me outside your room? Why does it hurt me and make my heart sink to look at you like this? Am I your Mars, my little spark?
