Super Fly- Chapter 6

He watched as Misty and her brother disappeared into the crowd as Misty obviously had to walk her brother over to the grade school.

Terrance punched his arm. "Ow! What was that for?"

"For calling me an idiot."

"Well, you were being an idiot. What she ever do to you?"

"Some friend you are?" Terrance said and stormed off.

Jacob waited with anticipation for Misty to enter their Math class. She wasn't late so she wasn't in a hurry like before but as she came down the aisle, she was staring at him with wide-eyed wonder and didn't see the strap that was about to cause her to fall.

She stumbled forward but was suddenly caught by two strong arms that set her right again. "You okay?"

"Yeah. You've got some amazing reflexes."

"Nah. I'm just used to pretty girls falling for me," he jested and she rolled her eyes at him.

"Well, thank you ... again."

"Anytime."

Misty had no idea what was going on today... but suddenly she had hope, it was going to be a good day. When she got her test paper and realized she had studied the wrong chapter... she just smiled inwardly. Nope, not even this is going to ruin today for her.

Misty had made it to lunch her favorite part of the day, knowing it was now half over. She walked past the student council table and they were selling candy grams for Valentine's Day. She had seen Jacob sitting there and she shook her head.

"Care to share with the rest of the class," Jenny teased.

"What?"

"You were shaking your head."

"Oh, that... what do you know about Jacob?"

"Super Fly? He is gorgeous and way out of our league. Why?"

"No, you're right..."

"Right about what? Wait... you LIKE him!"

Misty's blush was confirmation enough.

"Oh, you are so going over there?" Jenny said, taking Misty by the arm and leading her over to the table.

"But you just said he's out of my league," Misty tried reasoning.

"It can't hurt to have a conversation. Here's a dollar. They only cost .25 cents, so you can buy four."

"One problem. I don't know 4 people to buy them for."

"So get one for me and your brother and then celebrate with a brownie telling me all the details of your conversation over lunch. I'll save you a spot in line."

"Sounds like a plan," Misty said laughing.

She was so nervous as she waited in line to talk to him. She got to the table and held out her dollar saying, "I'd like to buy..." but three girls came up and bumped her aside.

"Hey there, Super Fly. I hope you didn't forget about us."

"Of course I didn't girls but she was here first," he said locking eyes with Misty, who felt like she'd melt into a pile of goo; all the while enduring the death glares from the trio.

"That's okay. I got her," said a teacher's aide who sat down and pulled out the cookie tin that held the cash.

Misty was so disappointed. Jacob smiled at her and then helped the girls in front of him.

The teacher's aide asked, "How many would you like?"

It only took Misty a half-second to decide.

"Thanks for ditching me in line," Jenny admonished, "Lucky for you I love you, so I got you a brownie anyway."

"Huh?" Misty said, "Oh, sorry. I didn't have enough money to get a brownie."

"Why wouldn't you have enough money....NO...you didn't... You DID! You got him a candy gram."

Misty bit her lip wondering if she just made the biggest mistake of her life.

The rest of the day went relatively smooth. It wasn't until she got to her locker at the end of the day, did she swear. "Really Terrance? Have you no life?"

Terrance, whose locker was a few down from hers, laughed hysterically. "Bye, Loser. Good luck catching your ride home," he said, giving her another mock salute only this time he made his hand into the letter L when he did it.

Misty looked at her watch and groaned at the time. He had colored her dial numbers in with permanent marker so it was nearly impossible to read and therefore impossible to open. She pounded her fist against the locker and regretted her lapse in sanity the moment she had done so. "Damn, that smarts."

"Well, if you're going to pick a fight with your locker. You had to know your locker was going to win."

"Hey there, Super Fly," Misty said without thinking and then looked away embarrassed.

"I know. Dumbest nickname ever, right?"

Misty shrugged while giving him a shy glance. "I don't know...it... kinda suits you?"

Jacob flashed her a million-watt smile. "Hey, sorry we didn't get to talk in the cafeteria today at the candy gram table?"

"Ah, I was just getting a couple for some friends of mine."

"Boyfriends?" he asked, as he bent down to take a look at her lock.

"You're funny, Jacob. A girl like me doesn't have boyfriends."

He pulled a piece a paper from his pocket and popped her lock open in seconds. "I can't see why not."

"I know I should be disturbed by how easily you did that, but right now I'm just too grateful," Misty said putting her things away and grabbing her homework.

He noticed she ignored his statement just like she did his compliment in Math class.

"I was pranked a lot of Freshman year. If you really want to make it hard for someone to open their locker you do this." He popped open Terrance's lock flipped it backward and locked it again. "Just for an example, of course."

Misty giggled and he loved the sound. "Of course," she said.

"Shall we?" he said gesturing to the door.

"We shall?" she said, "Right after I get my brother..."

Okay, so they weren't headed for a make-out session but it was a start.
