Chapter 7 | Radiating Heat

Today was the day! Combat training, and everyone was excited to see her quirk in action. Of course they wouldn't be able to see her at her best. She had spoken to Nezu before the training, he had made it clear she could only use up to 70% of her true strength. After all, she was much more experienced than the rest of them.

Nonetheless she was going to have fun with this, to battle these bright young students and see who had the most potential would be exhilarating. She hoped she would fight one of the more powerful students.

Soon enough the girls surrounded her, chatting about the homework that was assigned today and even how her costume looked like and her quirk. They made their way to the locker room and changed into their own respective costumes.

She was the last one out, actually, she hadn't even started changing until the last girl was out of the room. After all, there was always a few scars that no one should see. She changed quickly and headed out to the field with the rest of her classmates.

The girl's immediately turned around to see her costume. It had a red and dark blue/grey color scheme. She had a dark blue sleeveless cloak with a diamond shapped opening in the back to show her skin and gloves lined with brass to pack a punch, a fiery pattern adorning them. Her combat boots held the same pattern and contained small pores on the bottom and her red visor covered her eyes and nose.

"Hey guys." She said with a smile as she waved hello. Slowly students threw compliments her way about her costume and the training began to take way.

"Alright listen up! We're doing some combat training today." Aizawa-sensei said as the class cheered. "Come up here and pick your opponent." He said as he held out a box with a hole at the top.

"You will be drawing who you are to complete combat with!" All Might said with a proud smile beside him. "Now cmon, who's first!?"

Everyone was ready to jump up to the opportunity, they all were more than ready to show off their talents. One by one everyone picked an opponent, finally it was her turn. (Y/N) stepped up to the drawing box and nervously pulled a name out.

Her eyes widened and she looked up at Aizawa and then back at the card. "Are you sure this is a good idea?" She whispered to him, nervous sweat forming on her forehead.

He simply shrugged, a smirk slightly showing as All Might sent her his commiserations. "(Y/N) Vs. Bakugo!" Aizawa said as everyone stopped their conversations to look at the two students.

Each of them held different expressions, the ones that stood out the most were the ones who seemed to be praying for her safe return from the battle and the others were wishing her good luck. Midoriya stepped up to her and put a hand on her shoulder with a dead look in his eyes, before patting her back and returning to his friend group.

It couldn't possibly be that bad fighting him.... right?

Bakugo stepped up with a sinister grin, "Looks like you'll be showing you quirk to me anyways!" He said with a shit-eating grin.

"Alright that's enough!" Aizawa said as he gestured for them to follow him. "Let's go, we don't have time to waste."

Soon enough they were at an arena similar to the sports festival, each pair had stepped up to the plate and proved their valor through glorious battle against their peers. As time passed it had been Kirishima against Iida, the two of them exchanged blows, but in the end, because of Iida's recent upgrade, Kirishima was unable to keep up with the speedster, even with his new ultimate move.

(Y/N) looked at her cousin with a certain fondness and reassurance that made the both of them light the room with future potential. She knew that he wouldn't let one loss get him down, not after he came so far. Not long after it was her turn to step up to the arena with her opponent, Bakugo Kastuki.

She had watched the sports festival, she had known that his explosions were more than powerful and was most likely able to blow her clear out of the stadium if he had the chance. She remained resilient and focused on the goal ahead of her. She wanted to beat him, she needed to beat him, but only with 60% of her strength. So she shut out the rest of the crowd and took a deep breath, her theme song playing in her head as she looked Bakugo in the eyes.

Even with half his face hidden behind the mask, she couldn't deny the teen, he was attractive on some level, but she's punched faces prettier than his, this wouldn't be a problem. They both held proud smiles as they walked onto the stage, their hero costumes shone in the sun beating down on them. Before Aizawa called start, she was already using her quirk. She subtly gathered the heat around them and stored them in her body for later use, after all, there was only so much heat that the pores on her body could release.

"Ready, Start!" Aizawa said as both of them lunged forward.

She figured that Bakugo was a clever child, he would find out her weakness and how her quirk worked soon, she needed to strike faster than his brain could process the information.

Fire had burst out the bottom of her feet and was channeled out through the wholes on her combat boots. The blonde shot forward at a similar pace and they were hurdled towards each other. As soon as he tried to blow her with one of his explosions, her quirk went into action. With many years of training, she gathered the heat from his explosions by reflex and just as quickly shot a blast of fire at him from her palm.

They both jumped back, (Y/N) caressed the bruise forming on her cheek from the impact of the explosion and Bakugo held his shoulder where he had been burned. Luckily she turned the heat down enough to only mildly sear him. She didn't want t burn anyone to a crisp after all. Although, she had taken the heat from his attack, explosions were more than just heat, they were atoms moving at a rate that was enough to combust. Therefore, she didn't come out unscathed.

Bakugo held a serious but absolutely pissed expression, but (Y/N) didn't falter. The determination in her eyes shone brightly and she smiled. Adrenaline rushed through her veins before they attacked each other once again. In this fight, neither of them would come out completely unscathed, and that was the best part.

They clashed over and over, heat being thrown around both of them as they worked to defeat each other in combat. Because of their quirks, the battle seemed never ending, each of them relied on heat but produced it at the same time. The only difference was that one was more drained by their own attacks than the other.

The tendons in Bakugo's forearms had began to cramp up and he couldn't risk producing another large explosion unless it would completely defeat her. What he didn't know was her weakness or the drawback of her quirk. It was almost the same as Todoroki's no clear vantage point unless observed with detail. Even then, she seemed nearly unfazed by his attacks. She gained bruises and scratches but as far as he could tell, she wasn't scorched anywhere. She had a fire quirk, how it worked was a mystery to him.

As of now, he had his own burns to worry about as well. He had a heat based quirk, he was already used to mass amounts of it, but she had managed to make the burns sear against his skin, and she had projectile attacks that were easier to control than his own AP Shot. He let a growl escape his lips, as the two circled around each other in an attempt to catch their breaths.

(Y/N) wasn't trying, but just because she wasn't trying doesn't mean she wasn't tired. She was going back and forth between taking heat in and pouring it out. Underneath her brass lined gloves, blood trickled down her knuckles. She needed to end this battle quickly or the blood that was released from her pores would show through the fireproof cloth.

Cheers could be heard from all around her but they were drowned out by the both of them and their attacks. "DIE DAMN IT NERD!" Bakugo said as he lunged forwards and readied for a large attack. "HOWITZER IMPACT!" He yelled as he was shot forward by his own explosions.

Before he could even finish his attack he lost sight of her figure. He stumbled over himself and stopped half way as he skidded to a stop. He looked a round the arena before he heard a power move call out. Looking up, he saw (Y/N) with bright wings of fire protruding from her back. The diamond shape of her bare skin was producing large amounts of fire that kept her jetting through the air.

An unreadable expression was on her face as she stared down at Bakugo. His face twisted in anger and frustration before his attention was caught by a power move being called out.

"Pile Driver!" (Y/N) said with a clear, projecting voice as she rose on arm above her head and her flames moved in circles above her head. Gradually they built up to a drill shape and as she gestured for her newly formed weapon to descend down towards him, his face twisted up into one of horror.

As the move came crashing down he blasted himself out of the way from the full impact of the move. The drill came down and made quick contact with the arena. The concrete flew into different directions as he was blown out of the arena from the impact of the controlled fire.

As he skidded across the grass, smoking from the intense heat, (Y/N) gently landed on the destroyed arena. Her expression was still neutral and as she stared at him, with effort he looked up to see her head held high and watching as he struggled to stand.

His mind filled with anger as his hands cracked and popped with his frustration. But slowly (Y/N) lowered her head and her visor retreated back to its base, the ear protectors. Her eyes said as much as they could without offending him. She held no pity, no regret, but they were filled with acknowledgment and respect for the boy in front of her. He put up a good fight and tried his hardest to win. It was as their eyes met that the anger from his loss slowly transformed into something else, something that made him turn away and slowly limp towards the exit.

What hit him hardest, what made him realize that he didn't stand a chance- was that she didn't even break a sweat through the entire battle. She was scratched up, bruised, and her hand was beginning to bleed through her gloves. But there was no sign of weakness, of effort, of anything more than a regal sense of duty and respect for her opponent.
