Train for the Game
Dear Diary,
I'm nine weeks pregnant now and I'm SO tired. All I want to do is nap literally all the time. Honestly, I could nap all day if I really wanted to. I don't ever really miss church, but if I didn't have super secret special bodyguard training afterwards, I totally would. I guess there's some kind of remote thing I can use to contact Ella that's not hooked up to wifi and can't be hacked into.
My family really likes the new doorbell and camera system, especially Grammy. She likes to watch them all day on her phone. She even got to yell at some Jehova's witnesses yesterday from the comfort of her recliner. I think it was the best day of her life. She's so silly.
It's hard to just play along with everything and not tell my family what's really going on, about the mafia and everything. I think Luna is onto me though. I'm the worst liar, even when it's for a good reason, like a Christmas present or a surprise party!
Well, I really don't feel like getting up, but I need to get to church.

I put the lock on my diary and threw it back into my desk drawer, then drove off to church. Leo and I got to sit together again today, which was always a nice treat. Lucian gave a sermon on the woman at the well, how all of us aren't perfect but still deserving of love and forgiveness. He announced that forgiveness would be the theme for the next month. It seemed like something he was working on himself. I knew that deep down, he was really, really mad at Leo and I.
Once the service was done, Willa and Toby, the couple who sat a few rows in front of us, came over to chat and handed us a burlap bag.
"I know it's a little early, but we wanted to help any way we could. I know they're all really girly, but I'm sure with four there will be at least one girl," Willa said. "Carmella outgrew these a long time ago."
"There's some neutral gray and white stuff in there too," Toby said.
"Wow! Thank you guys so much. You are both my new favorite people!" I said.
"Yeah, this is a really nice gesture," Leo said.
"And if you're looking for a place to have the baby shower, we have lots of room in our barn event space," Willa said, handing me the business card for Harvest Hill Ranch, where her family lived. "I'm sure I can get my parents to give you guys a nice discount."
"Oh wow! That's super! They're gonna come so early, so we probably have to start planning the baby shower soon!" I said, looking at Leo, who was turning white. "I'm already nine weeks, and I'll be in the hospital before I'm thirty weeks, so we should have the baby shower in two months or so."
"T-two months?" Leo said.
"Well if you decide you want to go ahead with it, just text me and we'll figure something out," Willa said.
"Oh, for sure!" I said, seeing Ella go past me and walk downstairs. "Well thanks again for the clothes! You guys are the best. We'll see you around."
We met in Lucian's office to do the super secret bodyguard training. Lucian was at his computer working. Leo was playing the role of the an assailant, and Ella was teaching me everything.
"These here are your call buttons. Even girl with small brain can use," Ella said, handing me a keychain.
"The right word is 'easy,' if you didn't know it. You can just say 'easy to use,'" I said, smiling and trying to be the best helper I could be.
"Yes, I know what easy means," Ella said. I frowned. "You have three colors. You have red. You have green. You have yellow."
"Yup," I said.
"Green means no more threat. Red is you need me now. Yellow is you are on alert, like you see someone following you."
"Okay."
So we practiced a few times with Leo pretending to follow me and pressing the yellow button. She showed me the way that she would get close to me and block anything. Then we practiced with the red button. The red button was pretty interesting.
Ella practiced someone pretending to hold a gun up to me and lure me out of the area I was in. Even though it was practice, it was still a little scary because what she was using definitely looked like a real gun. But as someone named the Dark Angel, I guess it makes sense for her to have one.
Then she demonstrated a "takedown" technique on Leo, where she jumped on him and brought him to the ground in the blink of an eye.
"Now you see this, I've got him where I want him," Ella said, still holding Leo on the ground, her legs wrapped around his stomach. "From here I break his neck, and he will go bye bye."
"But it won't come to that, though...right?" I asked.
"We cannot say for sure. This is all practice just in case. You never know with the Cavelli family," Lucian said from his desk. "It is better to be prepared and for something to not happen, than to not be prepared and have something happen."
After we were done training for the day, Leo and I went out to our favorite diner for lunch. Ella was sitting at the bar a few feet away, watching the TV and looking at her phone. It was our first practice of having her out with us.
It felt pretty uncomfortable to just have a conversation with Leo, knowing she was probably listening. We just tried to talk about school while I ate two plates of pancakes, hash browns, bacon, scrambled eggs, and toast that I was definitely going to throw up later.
But no matter what, I was staying positive. Leo and I were going to be just fine, and so were these four amazing babies. When I got back home, I sat in the driveway and texted Willa so we could learn about rates. With a barn venue, I thought of the perfect theme for our baby shower. This was going to be so fun!
