11. The Darkhold

♕♕♕

"I DON'T SEE A reason as to why they would lie about this?" Lily exclaimed angrily as she paced around Marcus's bed. Rosalie stood at his side, arms crossed as she watched her mother.

"They didn't even come to see me," Marcus explained, confused. "Why else would they come here for?"

Rosalie shook her head. "I...I don't know," She ran a frustrated hand through her tangled hair. "Mom, do you know what they took?" She looked at her mother, who wasn't paying attention. Lily looked around the room, eyes narrowed as she searched for something. "Uh, mom? Everything alright?"

She didn't answer. Marcus quirked a brow. "Lily. What's going on?"

Before she could say anything, Alexei burst into the room, followed by Director Herald, Yelena, and Irina. "Did they take it?" Herald walked straight to Lily.

"I think so," She answered gravely. She shook her head. "How did they know it was even here? No one but us knew."

"What was in here, mom?" Rosalie crossed her arms.

Lily and Herald turned to her, eyes both slightly wide. They glanced between each other. "Something we promised Nick Fury to keep safe."

"What!?" Both Marcus and Rosalie exclaimed.

"Nick Fury? As in the old head of SHIELD? That Nick Fury?" Rosalie's jaw dropped.

"Yes. That one," Lily nodded.

"What in the hell were you keeping in the infirmary that was from SHIELD?" Marcus sat up, jaw tightening in anger. Lily and Herald shared another look. Marcus's anger grew as they stayed silent. "What? What was it?"

Lily sighed shakily. She pinched the bridge of her nose and shook her head. "An ancient book filled with...all kinds of bad things. It's called the Darkhold and-"

"Suka!" Yelena cursed. Rosalie's head snapped to the Russians in the room, all of their faces painted with the same expression -- fear. "Stupid Americans! Are you telling me Wyatt and Killian got their grimy hands on the Darkhold?"

Lily dropped her head. This shocked Rosalie. Her mother was not one to admit defeat, or at least show it. "...yes,"

"Mom, what is the Darkhold?" Rosalie turned to her flustered mother.

"I-" Lily choked. She shook her head and rushed out of the room. A pit formed in Rosalie's stomach as she watched her mother run. Something was seriously wrong.

"The Darkhold is an ancient book, as Lily said," Herald stepped forward. "It contains spells of black magic and all things evil and bad. Fury entrusted us with it before the fall of SHIELD and Hydra because no one would suspect the CIA would have such a weapon. But, we have been a big target for witches ever since."

Rosalie's eyes widened. "Witches-"

"We do not have time to discuss witches, Director," Melina interrupted. "We must find this book, destroy it, and arrest Wyatt and Killian. There is no time to waste."

Herald nodded. "You're right, Vostokoff. But now that they have the book, they'll be easy to track."

"How?" Marcus tilted his head.

"The Darkhold emits a small amount of gamma radiation," Herald crossed his arms over his chest. "Enough of it, that allows us to track it and The Fosters."

"Wyatt and Killian aren't stupid," Rosalie piped up. "They must know that. We'll be walking into a trap."

"So be it!" Alexei cracked his knuckles. "I will break them into million pieces!" He growled.

"That's the spirit!" Herald clapped his hands. "Agent Mai," He turned to Rosalie. She felt a small pang of joy in her chest when he addressed her professionally. "Lead our friends to the weapons ward. Vostokoff," He then turned to Melina, who stood straighter. "You're with me. We'll track The Fosters and once we find them, we go in guns blazing!"

"Director Bates!" Rosalie laughed in shock. She had never heard him talk like that.

Herald shook his head, smiling softly. "We have no other choice. We can't give them a chance to use that book."

Rosalie nodded. "Right," She turned to Yelena, Irina, and Alexei with a small smile. "Follow me,"

The weapons ward was massive. Filled with every type of combat gear and weapon imaginable. Alexei giggled gleefully as they entered. "Which ones do I get?" He looked down at Rosalie with puppy-dog eyes.

Shaking her head, Rosalie chuckled. "Take whatever you like,"

That was all it took for Alexei to take off running like a kid in a candy store. Yelena and Irina came up on either side of her, Yelena smoothly taking her hand, gripping it tightly. Rosalie could tell she was nervous, now that there was magic involved. "This is impressive...for America," Yelena smirked.

Rosalie rolled her eyes. "You can't even compliment my country once?"

"Once is being generous," Irina chortled as she began to walked deeper, hand skimming a rocket launcher. "You say we can take...anything?" She looked back at Rosalie.

"Yes," She nodded. "Take whatever you think could blow that book to smithereens." Yelena removed her hand from Rosalie's and headed towards the bomb section.

"Then we will need these, no?" She smirked as she picked up a simple hand grenade.

Rosalie chuckled, rolling her eyes. "Yes, Yelena. We do,"

They all began filling their pockets with whatever they could. That be it guns, bombs, tasers, knives, anything. Alexei had even managed to strap the rocket launcher onto the back of his Red Guardian suit. As they left to join the others, Melina's voice hastily yelled in their ears. "Wyatt and Killian are headed to the South-West entrance!"

It was happening. Rosalie stiffened. "On it!" Marcus's voice echoed through.

"Marcus?" Rosalie pressed her comms in shock.

On the other end, Marcus chuckled. "You didn't think I'd let you all have the fun, did you?"

Rosalie smiled softly, shaking her head. "Of course not," She turned to the three Russians next to her. "You heard the woman -- South-West entrance it is!" They took off running. Rosalie led them down twisting hallways until they caught sight of Lily, Marcus, and Director Bates. They all stood at the entrance door, all hesitant to enter. "What's wrong..?" But as Rosalie asked, she answered her own question as the doorway came into view. Dark, forest green smoke billowed from underneath menacingly, reaching out for them. "Is that...them?"

"Yes..." Her mother breathed. She looked sadly at her daughter. "Rose...I'm sorry," She shook her head.

Rosalie tilted her head. "No, mom, no. None of this is your fault."

"What happened before might not have been," Her voice shook. "But this is. Fury gave me the Darkhold personally. It's my fault it was here in the first place."

"Lily," Herald's stern voice cut in. "Don't think like that. With all of us working together, we can destroy it for good."

"I'm sorry, Herald," Lily shook her head as her gaze returned to the smoking door. "But if you think because we have a few guns and grenades, that we can destroy that book, you are dumber than I thought."

And without another word, she marched forward and pushed open the door. The green smoke dissipated as she entered and as she watched her mother enter, Rosalie got a sick feeling in her stomach. "Mom!" She rushed after her, hearing a few mumbled words and then the bloodcurdling scream of her mother. "Mom?!" Her feet pounded against the pavement as she ran blindly into the smoke, following the noise. She finally entered a clearing in the thick smog, stopping dead in her tracks. "No..." As if suspended by rope, her mother hung in the air, convulsing in pain as her screams turned quieter. Wyatt stood before her, book open in his hands, his face twisted and sadistic. Killian was nowhere to be seen.

Rosalie could hear as the others joined behind her, all in equal shock. Wyatt's head snapped to Rosalie and his smile sent a chill up her spine. "Ah, Rosalie. So nice of you to join us. Your mother and I were just catching up."

"Wyatt," Director Bate's voice echoed. "That book has turned you mad. Can't you see what you're doing?"

Wyatt cackled. "Oh, the ever just Director. I wasn't talking to you," He waved his hand and a scream emitted from Herald as he was dragged into the air by the smoke, positioned right next to Lily.

"Wyatt, stop!" Rosalie stepped forward, but she was stopped as Yelena's hand grabbed her wrist tightly. She looked back at the blonde for a moment, seeing how scared she was. Rosalie took a deep breath. "It's me you want. Let them go and you can kill me! Just like you've always wanted!"

Another wild laugh came from Wyatt. He threw his head back. "You nieve child. Do you really think this is about you anymore? This book showed me what true power looks like! It killed my brother, he was always weak. But for me!? It gave me power beyond anything you could hope to have and with it, I can take over not just the CIA but the entire country!"

"He's gone mad," Melina gulped. Rosalie stepped back, leaned against Yelena. Whatever they thought they were walking into, it was ten times worse.

"What do we do?" Irina asked, her voice shaking.

"You, my little Russian friends, aren't doing a thing," Wyatt announced. "I have now quarls with you. Leave now and you will live," His head turned back to Lily, who had now stopped moving entirely. Then, he looked at Director Bates, who continued to fight against the dark magic. "With these two out of the way, I can rise to victory. And Rosalie..." He looked back at her, eyes dark with corruption. "You can leave too if you please. You hold significant power here, killing you would be...a chore."

"I'm not just gonna turn my back while you kill my mother!" Rosalie yelled, puffing her chest.

Wyatt's eyes narrowed as he smirked. "Alright, then don't turn your back." With a swift movement of his hand, a loud and sickening crack echoed through the hall and Rosalie watched in horror as her mother's body plummeted to the ground, landing on the hard floor with a horrific thud.

"No!" Rosalie screamed, ripping her hand from Yelena's and rushing to her mother's side. She pulled her lifeless body onto her lap, her head lolling back. Tears clouded Rosalie's vision as she hugged her mother, shaking violently as Wyatt cackled in the background. "Momma, n-no," Her voice cracked as she placed her forehead against her mother's cool skin. She was gone.
