09. Bumps In The Road

THE COLD METAL TABLE wasn't exactly comfortable, but that didn't stop Rosalie from falling asleep on it. With her head rested in her arms, she snored soundly, swept away into a dream world where nothing bad ever happens. But a dream is not reality. "Rise and shine!" The door swung open and Rosalie jumped awake. Killian strutted into the room, smiling smugly. "Your lawyer is here."
"Ugh," Rosalie rubbed her tired eyes. "I thought you weren't allowed in here?"
Killian laughed. "I'm allowed everywhere, regardless of what Mr. Pretty Boy Marcus tells you,"
"Excuse me, but I would like to talk with my client," A male voice said from behind Killian. He looked over his shoulder and sneered, but stepped aside. Rosalie heard light tapping as a man wearing red-tinted glasses and a cane walked in. Her lawyer was...blind? "Matthew Murdock, ma'am," He stuck his hand out for her to shake as he sat down. "And this is my partner, Franklin Nelson." A slightly chubbier man walked in behind him. Rosalie also shook his hand.
"Call me Foggy," He smiled kindly.
"I'm told you personally asked to represent me?" She questioned, tilting her head.
"That's right," Matt nodded.
"Why?" She asked plainly.
Matt sighed. "Because we believe in this case, Ms. Mai. We believe in your innocence,"
Rosalie paused. She felt strange. These complete strangers wanted to help her simply because they believed in her — it felt...good. "Wow..." Rosalie breathed. "T-Thank you."
"Don't thank us yet," Foggy shook his head. He pulled out a large pile of files from his bag and plopped it on the table. Rosalie's eyes widened.
"What is that?" She reached out to touch the stack.
"Everything we have on you and proof that your innocent," Matt told her. "Take a look."
Rosalie raised a brow. "Why?"
Foggy huffed, pushing the pile towards her. "Just do it..."
Rosalie took it apprehensively. "Okay..." She looked at them with confusion before opening the first file. Immediately, something stuck out to her. A bright yellow sticky note with bold black letters etched into it. Melina sent us. Go along with it. It all made sense. Rosalie contained her smile and the happiness that filled her at the thought of Melina. The next time she saw that woman she was giving her a hug.
Marcus was panicking. As soon as he had left Rosalie, he began downloading the video onto a hard drive and now, that hard drive was missing. As he rummaged through bins and drawers, a cough alerted him of someone's presence. "Looking for something?" The voice immediately calmed him as he turned to see Lily Mai standing behind him, hard drive in hand. She smirked, shaking her head lightly. "You really should be more careful where you leave things. If anyone else but me walked in here and took that, my daughter might have ended up behind bars for life."
She handed Marcus the hard drive and crossed her arms over her chest. "I'm pretty sure I locked my door." He smirked.
Lily laughed. "This is the CIA Headquarters — we all know how to pick a lock. Especially Killian and Wyatt Foster," Her face darkened. "Everything we need to clear her name is on that?" She pointed to the drive in his hand.
"Yup," Marcus nodded. "We just have to get it to the Director without Wyatt or Killian suspecting a thing."
"Which they already do," Lily huffed. "I can see them lurking."
"Me too," Marcus's eyes trailed to the windows, where he could see Killian slowly walking through the halls.
"Are those lawyers Melina sent good?" Lily asked.
Marcus looked back at her. "The best. She would have sent them otherwise. If what's on here doesn't work, they're sure to clear Rosalie's name," He pocketed the hard drive and sighed. "After their done talking to her, the Director will be down. That's when we go in."
Lily nodded, her eyes narrowing with determination. "Got it," She locked onto Killian, who was now leaning against the wall, staring at nothing. "What do you think he's doing?"
Marcus crossed his arms. "Obviously, nothing good. But...I bet they know something about the proof,"
Lily looked at him. "Why do you think that?" She sounded slightly nervous. This shocked Marcus. Lily had been his mentor and never once had he heard her so scared, she was always stoic and calm.
"Like you said, this is the CIA. Killian and Wyatt aren't stupid," Marcus breathed. "I don't think they know exactly but they know there's something," A knock at the door startled them both. "C-Come in!" He called. "Act casual," He whispered to Lily.
The door opened and Director Bates stepped in. "Afternoon," He nodded. "Lily," He turned to the older woman. "I was wondering if you'd join me to speak with Rosalie."
Lily raised a brow. "You want me to be in there while you question her?"
Director Bates placed his hands up. "I know, I know. Technically, it could taint the information but I have a feeling she'll be more willing to tell the truth with you there. She is your daughter, after all,"
Lily and Marcus shared a look. This was even better then they could've imagined. Lily looked back at the Director and nodded. "If that's what the boss wants, who am I to say no?"
Director Bates laughed loudly. "That's my best agent. Now, come along. Nelson and Murdock are just finished with her."
"Good luck," Marcus called to them as they left. He felt like jumping for joy. With Lily in there, Rosalie would tell the complete truth and he would be able to back up her claims with what was on the flash drive. He rushed to follow them, but a hard body got in his way. "Excuse me," He squinted up to see Wyatt Foster glaring down at him.
"Now, where do you think you're going, young man?" He pushed Marcus in and Killian followed behind, locking the door and shutting all the curtains completely.
"What do you want, Wyatt?" Marcus glared as he steadied himself. His voice was steady but he was terrified.
"What do you think, Beck?" Wyatt spat. "The flash drive. Hand it over and no one gets hurt."
"That's a lie," Marcus sneered, taking a step back. "Rosalie will."
Killian scoffed from the door. "Who cares about that bitch? It'll be a good think for all of us when she's locked away."
Marcus tilted his head. "Are you both really that intimidated by her?" He couldn't help but laugh. "What? Scared she'd steal your job?"
Wyatt growled, clenching his fists. "That girl has caused me nothing but trouble! At the rate she was going, she would've surpassed me and my brother!"
"So this is all about your ego?" Marcus was livid. "This was all so a woman wouldn't be ranked higher than you?"
"Not just a woman," Wyatt shook his head. "Someone so young. She's too inexperienced to do what we do. If we didn't do this, the CIA would crumble!"
Marcus pinched the bridge of his nose. "That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. You were willing to kill her just to prove to yourself she was weaker than you?" He laughed again, louder. "When Director Bates finds about about this, you're both done for."
At that statement, the energy in the room seemed to shift. Wyatt looked back at Killian, who nodded. "Now, boy, I'm sure you don't know what you're talking about. This is all a big misunderstanding, so please — hand us the flash drive and you won't get hurt."
"You think I'm threatened by you?" Marcus scoffed. "There's no way in hell you're getting your hands on it."
Wyatt sniffed, dropping his head. "I wish I didn't have to do this, son," Looking back up, the look on his face completely changed. He was eerily calm as he stalked towards Marcus, and before he could even blink, pain exploded through his nose and to his eyes a Wyatt punched him square in the face. Marcus stumbled back, shocked from the impact, but the brothers didn't give him time to react. The pummelled him, pushing him to the ground and kicking until he stopped moving. Wyatt squatted down and rummaged through every pocket on Marcus's body until he found the flash drive. "Keep this safe," He handed it to Killian. "No one can get their hands on it."
Rosalie nervously waved goodbye to Matt and Foggy as the Director and..."Mom?!" She gasped as her mother stepped in behind him. "W-What..?"
"I asked her to join us," Director Bates smiled softly as the two of them sat down across from her. "I hope that's okay,"
Rosalie couldn't take her eyes off of her mother as she nodded. "Yeah...it's fine," Lightly shaking her head, she managed to snap out of it and look at Director Bates.
"Rosalie," He started softly. "The accusations against you are...troubling, to say the least. For as long as I've known you, you've been a good friend and an ever better agent, one of the best, actually,"
"Thank you, Director," Rosalie nodded.
"Please, it's Herald to you," He insisted. "I didn't want to believe all of this initially but, Agents Killian and Wyatt provided a passionate case against you, but..." He trailed off.
Rosalie leaned forward. "But?" She hated how hopeful she sounded.
"There is no video evidence against you to prove you guilty," Director Herald sighed. "And without video proof, I cannot legally arrest you off of the word of two men," Rosalie sighed heavily, tension leaving her body as relief flooded through her. "Though, I also cannot release you yet."
"What?" The tension returned as his words shocked her. "Why not? You just said you had no proof!"
Director Herald sighed. "That is exactly why. With no proof showing innocence or guilt, we must keep you here until it is found."
"Herald," Her mother spoke up. "Agent Beck was talking with me earlier. He might have something."
"Really?" Director Herald seemed to lighten up. "I'll have someone go fetch him." He clicked his intercom and sent for Marcus.
Not long after, the door burst open with a panicked agent. "Sir! It's Beck!"
Director Herald stood instantly. "What is it?"
The agent was breathing heavily, eyes wide with fear. "He was beaten, sir. Half dead. He's being taken to the infirmary as we speak."
"Oh god," He ran a hand down his face. "Do we know who did it?"
"We think so," The agent nodded. "Wyatt and Killian Foster were the last seen with him...and they're no where to be found."
A pit formed in Rosalie's stomach. She looked at her mother with fear. Lily shuddered. "They have the hard drive."
