07. The Plan

♕♕♕

NATASHA RUSHED TO TURN on their small television and flicked to the local news broadcast. Rosalie's heart stopped at the sight of her face dead centre on the screen as the reporter talked. "If you see this woman, do not approach. Call the authorities."

Rosalie suddenly stood up and all eyes turned to her. Her fist balled tightly as she stared ahead — she was seeing red. "Rosie..?" Yelena said quietly, slowly placing a her hand over top her balled fist.

"Huh?" Rosalie shook her head and looked down at the blonde.

"Are you...okay?" She asked softly.

Rosalie answered honestly. "No," She huffed. "Wyatt is really pulling out all the stops."

"Why does he want you so bad?" Sam piped up.

Rosalie shrugged stiffly. "I guess because his initial ambush didn't kill me? If I'm out here with information that could ruin his life and career, he's gonna stop at nothing until I'm dead," Everyone fell into a silent shock. "Oh...it's a little grim when I put it that way." She chuckled awkwardly.

Irina cleared her throat. "We need to do something," She looked at Rosalie with such seriousness. "I have only know you a few days now, Rosalie Mai, but to me, you are worth saving."

"Irina..." Rosalie stepped towards her, shaking her head softly. "I am not dragging you into this mess. I'm not dragging any of you into this," She turned to the larger group. "Natasha, Steve, Sam...you're all on the run. I'm not going to let you risk your safety for me. And Yelena-"

"Do not even finish your sentence," Yelena placed her hand up. She crossed the room and grabbed Rosalie's shoulders securely, forcing her to look her in the eyes. "It is not your choice whether we help you or not and I think I speak for everybody here when I say we will gladly do so,"

Rosalie's took a sharp breath in, staring wide eyed at Yelena. "But..."

"No buts," Yelena told her sternly in Russian. "We will help, no?" She looked out the four others and everyone nodded collectively. Rosalie was surprised to see Sam, Natasha, and Steve nod — she had only just met them. "See? Now, stop trying to push us away and let's come up with a plan."

Rosalie felt silly as her eyes began to water. "Thank you," She pulled Yelena into a tight hug. They swayed softly and when they let go, Rosalie's face was damp with tears.

"Don't cry, silly," Yelena chuckled softly, wiping away the falling streams. "We have a name to clear."

Surprisingly, hatching a plan to prove your innocence was a lot faster and easier with two Avengers, an international super spy doubled as an Avenger and two former Red Room Widows. The plan, by all means, was insanely complicated and not simple at all, but Rosalie was sure that if they managed to pull it off, Wyatt would be behind bars and she would be a free woman again. "And you three are one hundred percent sure you're okay with this? Risking your hideout?"

Sam nodded. "One thousand percent, more like," He sent her a cheeky smile. "We can always find new places to hide."

"Yeah," Steve agreed. "Nat's a natural at that."

"You're making me blush," Natasha rolled her eyes playfully as she finished up Rosalie's new wig. "Turn your head this way for me," She said, pinching her chin to maneuver Rosalie's head. She clicked her tongue, satisfied. "All good. You can barely recognize you."

"Thanks, guys," Rosalie smiled, patting down her new chestnut hair.

Yelena rushed up to check her out, scanning her face and body with intrigue. "Blue eyes suit you!" She exclaimed. "Who are you and what have you done with my Rosie?" The two shared a laugh.

Steve cleared his throat, stopping the laughing and grabbing their attention. "Keep the earpieces in at all times and Rosalie," He pointed at her. "Do not lose the body-cam. That is the most important piece of this puzzle."

"Yes, sir," Rosalie saluted. "I'll guard it with my life," Steve's face dropped. Rosalie coughed. "Y-You know what I mean,"

"Smooth," Yelena whispered, nudging her playfully.

Steve brushed it off. "Just...be careful. Sam will go ahead and scout and once he's spotted Wyatt and his men, that's when you, Yelena, and Irina move in. Got it?"

"Got it," The three said unanimously.

Sam clicked in his wings and nodded curtly. "We got this, ladies," He patted each of their backs before rushing out of the apartment. Now, all Rosalie had to do was wait, and she didn't have to do it long. "He's in the plaza," Sam's voice came through the intercoms. "An armoured truck, ruffly ten men, and Wyatt right in the middle."

"Thanks, Sam," Steve nodded. "Now get out of there before they see you,"

"Copy that, Captain," Rosalie imagined that he saluted.

Steve turned to them. "Alright, you're up," Rosalie nodded as she, Irina, and Yelena stocked up on weapons — guns, smoke bombs, grenades, whatever they could. As they moved to exit, Natasha and Steve stopped them. "Stay safe, okay?"

"They're not babies, Steve," Natasha chuckled. "But seriously, if either of you gets hurt..." She shook her head. "Just...be careful. Look out for each other."

Yelena smiled softly and quickly pulled her sister into a short hug. "I'll see you later," She nodded, whistling softly.

Natasha whistled back, and the three of them hurried off. "Good luck!" Sam said as he passed them on the staircase.

Rosalie's heart was pounding, both from fear and adrenaline. As they stopped at the bottom, just before she could push open the door, Yelena grabbed her wrist. "Rosalie," She said softly. "Whatever happens out there, promise me you won't do anything stupid."

Rosalie cocked her brow, smirking slightly. "Like what? Blow up a building on accident?" She joked, but as she watched Yelena's face, her eyes, she could see that the blonde was serious. "Oh...Yelena I-"

"No, it's okay. I just...I know you," She sighed, shaking her head. "And I know you do stupid things for the people you love," Rosalie's heart clenched as she stared deep into Yelena's eyes. "So please, for my sake, don't. We are in this together. We fight together, we die together."

Rosalie gulped and nodded. "Gotcha," She let out a shaky breath. "Nothing stupid. I promise,"

Yelena smiled. "Good,"

"Excuse me?" Irina coughed loudly. "I'm still here, you know?"

Both their eyes widened as they burst out laughing. "We're so sorry, Irina!" Rosalie laughed, pulling the other Widow over for a hug.

Irina shook her head and hugged back softly. "It is okay," She chuckled. "But I hope that promise also applies to me. Like Yelena said, nothing stupid."

Rosalie jokingly groaned and pulled away. "Ugh, you guys sound like my mother," She rolled her eyes playfully and adjusted the straps of her vest. "Let's get this over with. Someone's waiting for us."

The two nodded, and as soon as all three of them stepped outside, their situation finally became real, the reality and weight of what they were about to do settling on them. Rosalie squared her shoulders, took a deep breath in and began walking to the plaza. Yelena and Irina flanked her, hands on a hidden gun, just in case. As they grew closer and closer, the sounds of heavy boots and cocking guns became louder. "Keep your eyes peeled, men!" Wyatt's voice echoed — it sent a shiver down all their spines.

Rosalie held her breath, keeping her head high. "Hide," She whispered to Yelena and Irina. "Spread out." They did so. Rosalie followed her own instructions, and once they were all out of each other's sight, she called out. "Whatever your planning isn't going to work, Wyatt!" She could hear startled gasps as the soldiers gripped their guns tighter.

"Rosalie!" He called happily. "I'm so glad to hear your voice! Now, where are you so I can greet you properly!"

"You know I'm not gonna tell you that!" She responded. "And your men can search all they like, they're not gonna find me! I've come to have a little chat!"

"Are you...afraid?" He laughed. "How delightful!"

"Not afraid, more like...cautious!" She rolled her eyes. Talking to that man was insufferable. "Why don't you tell your men to stand down all I'll come willingly!"

Wyatt laughed loudly and for way too long. "You're funny, Mai! Truly, you'd have a blossoming career in comedy! That's not gonna happen-" Suddenly, he stopped, and this panicked Rosalie. Something was going wrong, she could feel it. "Rosie, you didn't tell me you brought friends!"

Yelena and Irina. Rosalie's blood ran cold. Her mind raced with what to do — was it a trap? Or did he actually know where they were? She tapped her comms. "Irina, Yelena, come in!"

There was some scratching before Irina's voice rang through. "They have Yelena on the run!"

Rosalie knew Yelena would be mad. "Where? What direction?"

"North-East, to the plaza!"

Sucking in a sharp breath, Rosalie prepared herself and took off running. She caught a glimpse of Irina as she passed, listening for the footsteps of armed soldiers. She heard the distinct yell of Yelena and sharply turned right. Rosalie was staring down a long alleyway that opened into the plaza, where Yelena stood surrounded, a least six guns pointed at her. This can't be happening, She thought, her body frozen with fear, fear of what might happen to Yelena. As she stood there, unable to move, Wyatt walked around the corner, a curling smirk on his face. "Rosalie, predictable as always," He singled two other soldiers, who jogged down to Rosalie, grabbing her by the underarms and pulling her into the plaza with Yelena. "You changed your hair," Wyatt commented. "Did you think that would help your escape?"

"Just kill me already. I know you want to," Rosalie spat.

Wyatt chuckled. Walking forward, he placed his long fingers under Rosalie's chin, forcing her to look up at him. "Oh, I would like nothing more than to watch you bleed out slowly, painfully. But, after my attempt in Moscow failed, I had to go about this another way,"

"By going to the capital? Like they believed a word you said," She scoffed.

"Oh, you'd be surprised," He cooed. "Why do you think there's a worldwide manhunt for you? You're charged with attempted murder of a superior, withholding the whereabouts of not two, but five fugitives, and I'm sure I could make up some other bullshit that guarantees you life behind bars or better yet, the electric chair," He smiled wildly, his eyes wide with glee and delight. It unsettled Rosalie.

"Okay," She answered simply. "Take me to headquarters."

Wyatt's face dropped. He wasn't anticipating that answer, but Rosalie knew he wouldn't be able to kill her, so it gave her a leg up, even if he didn't know it yet.
