   *Knock knock*

   Aubrey waits outside his house, hoping someone would answer the door.

   She's been trying to get into contact with Kel for forever, but it's been nearly impossible. It's been weeks, fuck, even months.

   Nobody wants to come out.

   Which is understandable.

   The rain pours onto her, making her hair wet as hell and her ripped blue clothes damp.

She tries again.

   *Knock Knock*

   ... she's been waiting at their door for a while now, so it's probably best to try again later.

Giving up her losses, Aubrey starts to walk away.

"Aubs...?"

She flips around, and to her surprise,

Kel is there, standing in the doorway.

God, she hasn't seen him in forever.

She doesn't hesitate to wobble over to him quickly, embracing him in a tight hug.

Kel holds up his arms, probably lost on what to say, "Do you wanna... come in?"

   She nods,

   "Yes please."

   The house looks... so different. Everything is messy, compared to when she last saw it. Mold is growing on the side of the walls, and spilled trash and gunk is all over the floors.

   Messy isn't the right word, more like rancid.

   Kel sits down on the torn up couch, and Aubrey plops down next to him awkwardly.

   "..."

   "..."

   They stare away from each other, not knowing how to engage in the conversation.

   "So..." Kel twiddles his crusty fingers, the nails way too long and who knows what underneath them.

   "Uhm..." Aubrey taps her bare foot against the dirty carpet.

   "How... long have you been trying to see me?" Kel finally looks up at Aubrey.

   She realizes something.

   His eyes... they're so... lifeless.

   "Uh... for a few months now."

   Kel glances away in shame.

   "Sorry."

   More unbearable silence.

   "I'm... glad you finally showed up though." She says, genuinely, a weak smile forming on her face.

   Kel stares back up at her, with his emotionless, empty eyes.

   "I'm sorry."

   They just fixate on each other for a moment, seeing all of the differences between them.

   Aubrey's hair is matted and the pink is fading into a dark brunette on the top. It's short a brittled. She has on only one contact, a blueish green one in her right eye. The other eye is brown.

   Kel has a good amount of blonde highlights in his hair, cornering the ends of the strands. He has on a light teal cardigan, with a white collar up underneath.

   His eyes are like dark voids, ones that you could get lost in if you looked at them long enough.

"You don't have to apologize." She wishes he wasn't so hard on himself.

It's not his fault.

It's hers.

He glances back at the ground.

"I'm just... happy you're still here."

That sentence takes her by utter shock, to the point where she can't even respond.

Kel opens his mouth again, but then closes it, like he was hesitating to speak.

"I... I miss them so much." She whispers, hoping he wouldn't hear her.

Now it's Kel's turn to look baffled.

"I... I do to." Was his only response.

Again, the tension and nothingness in the air was agonizing.

Kel suddenly stands up.

"I... I have to go to the bathroom."

Aubrey wrangles down any feelings of worry and horror for him, "... Okay."

He walks away slowly, his footsteps becoming more and more quiet until they were only a mere memory.

   Aubrey holds her head in painfully awful guilt.

   Why did things have to come to this....?

   He was listening to music, while playing a game. He bopped his head up and down to the beat, enjoying his afternoon.

  Humming along to one of his favorite songs that came on, he jammed our innocently.

... he doesn't really remember what happens next.

All he can recall is a

   loud,

   gut wrenching,

  gunshot.

   ...

   "H e r o . . . ?"
