Light Switch

Then God said, "Let there be light!" So there was light. God saw the light was good. So God separated the light from the darkness. God named the light day, and the darkness be named night. There was evening, then morning - the first day.
Genesis 1:3-5

ometimes it's hard to get your bearings when in an unfamiliar place. It can disturb you when you wake from a deep sleep and you're not at home. Until a little more light enters the room to help clarify your memory, you may be scared of the unfamiliar room.

God is the light, driving away all fear. Having a fear of the Lord renders all other fears nulled.

When you're in the dark, it's tough to figure out anything. But with even a glimmer of light, things begin to make sense.

Life without God is life in the dark. When you have Him to rely on, life doesn't seem so scary. Because He bears the weight of it for you.

If God hasn't entered into something or someone, everything is dark. Really dark. There's a reason Genesis 1:3-4 tells us that God filled the dark void with light and then pronounced it good. Light dispels darkness and brings perspective.

Where's the darkness in your life today? Are you overwhelmed with the thought of that test or the boss you can't seem to get along with? Maybe things aren't so great at home, or there's conflict between you and a friend. Let God enter your dark world and light it up with His presence. As Isaiah 60:19 echoes, "The Lord will be your everlasting light." If He can fill the emptiness in the universe, He can help you face your dark day.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:16

Let There Be Light

When you walk in an unlit house, fear may take a hold of you. You may think you see things or hear things. Or you may stumble and stub your toe or run into something. When you're in darkness, you feel as if no one can see you so you may do something you shouldn't.

Our experience teaches us the universal truth: Darkness (whether physical or moral) means trouble! Without light (God) we experience fear, temptation, or suffering.

The Gospel of John repeatedly refers to Jesus as "the light of the world." Christ is able to bring comfort and guidance to people who find themselves stumbling around in spiritual darkness. Like a bright beacon, His life shows us the best way to live. But it isn't enough just to know Christ is light. We must stay close beside Him (see John 8:12) and follow His lead every day of our lives. Then we will be able to make wise decisions and avoid the shame and heartache of venturing off into the darkness.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:5

Assignment
Spend some time today examining the various areas of your life. Where do you need the light of Christ to shine the most?

Lord, help me to see the darkness that awaits me when I stray from Your light. Sometimes my life seems like I'm stumbling in the dark, groping for the light switch. Let Your light shine through my dark world today and fill the emptiness in my life. Don't let me ever forget that you are always with me.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
Psalm 119:105

Let my life be a light to some soul~
May I help struggling ones to the fold.
(Church Hymnal)
