Chapter Thirteen: Ashdawn's Story
"What prophecy?" Sunblaze wailed. "A few days ago, Jayfeather told me of a prophecy. He believed it concerned Falconfur, you, and me. The prophecy was that after the fight of the falcon and the lark of the sky, hope would come with the blaze of the sun. I believe it means that after Falconfur and I die, you will bring ThunderClan and LightningClan hope. We've also discovered that I have a-" Skylark began to explain, but Jayfeather stopped her. "We still don't know if it concerns any you, though. It is dangerous for us to tell everything. Just trust us, alright?" Jayfeather asked. Sunblaze nodded and let herself fall to an uncomfortable sleep.
"He's back!" Sunblaze woke to the roar of a warrior. She sat up and stared out of the medicine cat den. A tabby gray cat with broad shoulders was standing at the entrance of the den: Ashdawn. Ashdawn's tail was swishing from side to side while many warriors were circling him, hissing with their claws unsheathed. The tom, however, remained calm and padded forward to meet Sparkstar's gaze. "Aren't you going to welcome your own father to your clan?" Ashdawn sneered. "No," Sparkstar retorted. "I am going to ask him to leave." Ashdawn flattened his ears at Sparkstar's raging words. Sunblaze pricked her ears. "Have you seen what you've done to my friend?" Sparkstar yowled, his voice suddenly filled with pain. Ashdawn looked over at Sunblaze. "Sorry about that. Took me by surprise, that's all," Ashdawn carelessly apologized. Sunblaze was on her paws at once. "That is not what you said! You said that I took you away from Sparkstar! You were going to kill me!" Sunblaze yowled. Ashdawn unsheathed his claws and let his lips curl back in a vicious snarl. Sunblaze unsheathed his claws in reply and growled lowly. Sparkstar stepped between the two cats. "Sunblaze, another fight will surely kill you," the LightningClan leader hissed. Sunblaze nodded and sat down in her nest of soft moss. Ashdawn smirked and turned back to Sparkstar. "It is time for me to take over," Ashdawn growled. "Only after you kill me, then." Ashdawn raised a claw to rip Sparkstar to shreds, but Sparkstar put his paw against Ashdawn's raised arm. "This isn't the way to power, Ashdawn. What would Deerflight want?" Ashdawn's eyes sparkled with memory, then they turned to hatred. "She would want me to become Ashstar. It's time to rip you apart." Sparkstar's eyes grew large with fear. "I don't deserve to be a leader, but I will not let my clan fall to ruins," Sparkstar sputtered. Ashdawn raked his claws against Sparkstar's cheek. The leader yowled in pain and swiped a needle sharp claw at Ashdawn. The cat dodged and raised a deadly claw.
Sunblaze couldn't bear it any longer. She yowled, "STOP! I've seen families torn apart! I won't let it happen! StarClan has no place for you, Ashdawn! You tried to murder me, and you've tried to murder your own son! I've felt your pain, my family was torn too. I-it destroys part of you. It makes a hole which can never be filled or patched. You can't change your fate, Ashdawn. It's too late for that. Leave LightningClan in peace! But if you must kill a cat, kill me."
Cats stared. Ashdawn and Sparkstar stared in shock at Sunblaze. "Your courage has served you well, Sunblaze," Ashdawn finally spoke. Sunblaze growled in disgust. Ashdawn was respecting her, after all they had been through. "I know how it feels to have a family torn, too, Sunblaze," Ashdawn muttered. Sunblaze narrowed her eyes. "Tell me the story," she hissed. Ashdawn's ears flattened back as he told the terrible story.
"I was Ashpaw in RiverClan, moons ago. I was being trained by a courageous cat. I remember the night Deerflight and I met. I was attending the gathering after Mistystar died. I was sitting next to Jaypaw, my best friend, when I noticed a small tan she-cat with speckled white spots named Deerpaw. She was beautiful. I strayed over to her and sat with her. She was very nice to me, but she did forget to hold her tongue a few times. I asked her what clan she was from, and to my dismay, she said WindClan. At this time RiverClan was very bitter with WindClan. We talked until the Gathering started. When the leaders spoke, all seemed to be well in ShadowClan and ThunderClan, until we reached WindClan. Breezestar accused RiverClan of stealing prey. Deerpaw asked me if it was true, and I said no. She narrowed her eyes and muttered something. At the end of the gathering she asked if we could meet again. I said yes, and then we built a relationship outside of the warrior code. We ran off together and became loners shortly after Deerflight received her warrior name. Then we had three kits: Sparkkit," Ashdawn glanced over at Sparkstar, "Jaykit, and Eaglekit. Eaglekit died soon after she was born. Then we returned to the clans after six moons to let Sparkkit and Jaykit become and apprentice. Then we left again. I trained them and gave them their warrior names: Jayflight and Sparkclaw. Deerflight became very ill one day- greencough. It was the middle of leaf-bare. I dragged her to ShadowClan because it was closest, and they treated her well, but she died. Now I was left alone with my son, Sparkclaw. Sparkclaw just turned around and disappeared. I became trapped in my sorrow. I remember that one day I heard you squealing in the river as I was passing by with Sparkclaw. We eventually saved you, but I had to abandon Sparkclaw to get you help. He wouldn't go back to the clans. Then he disappeared and became Sparkstar. Then the fight happened. Now we're here."
Sunblaze was shocked as Ashdawn told his story. The old cat looked into Sunblaze's green eyes with tears. "Well, that's the story. I guess I'm not wanted," he sighed and turned around. "Stop!" Sunblaze shouted. Ashdawn turned around. "You are staying here," Sparkstar growled. "I won't let you feel that kind of pain again. Everyone deserves a second chance." Ashdawn looked incredibly shocked. "After my thirst for your blood, you forgive me?" Sunblaze nodded. Ashdawn looked to the stars. "I'm never going to be free of my pain, but I will share it with others." Sunblaze dipped her head and looked out at the entrance to the cave. "I am no longer Ashdawn," Ashdawn finally spoke. "I cannot bear the name of my past. I am Grayflame, a loyal warrior of LightningClan." Sparkstar twitched his ear irritably and narrowed his eyes. Grayflame showed his sharp teeth in a smile, and his eyes shone brightly. Sunblaze swished her tail in disapproval at Sparkstar. Grayflame stopped smiling, and a worried look spread across his face. "What's wrong?" Sparkstar's eyes filled with rage as he replied to Grayflame, "Even with your past, I cannot believe what you've done. You nearly ripped Sunblaze and I to shreds!" Sunblaze rested her tail on Sparkstar's shoulder. "I forgive you," she mewed. Grayflame dipped his head and hope seared his eyes like a blazing flame. Sparkstar hesitated before nodding. "I am not a leader to turn down a cat who seeks a clan. You are welcome to LightningClan for now." Grayflame purred deep into his throat and padded past Sunblaze and Sparkstar. "I'm sure that Deerflight sees him now," Sparkstar murmured. Sunblaze nodded in response. "I miss Jayflight so much; she was in an angry rage when I last saw her. She was so mad she stormed into a tunnel, shaking the earth with her pawsteps. She was only trying to escape her problems. Then the tunnel collapsed and all I could hear was the crying of fear then the crashing of thundery rocks. She was gone," Sparkstar whimpered. Sunblaze felt sorrow sting her pelt as she remembered when she was separated from her family. She licked Sparkstar's folded ear to straighten it, but got a surprised look for a response. Sparkstar's expression soon turned into a smile as Sunblaze padded away with her bright green eyes sparkling.
