Krrummpp!
The building ahead of me exploded in a cascade of falling stone and dust. I spared a brief moment to hope no-one had been inside. It was early morning, if the blast had gone off at midday, it would have caught dozens of workers grabbing a quick bite in Pietro's Palace.
Automatically, I scanned the few people I could see standing in the street. Most had fled at the sound and sight of the blast, but there were a few, like myself, who were frozen to the spot, staring in mingled shock and disbelief.
My gaze fixed on one face. In a sea of shock, he looked ... disappointed. As if aware of my interest, he turned and started walking briskly in the direction of Central Station. Without thinking, I followed.
"Grab him!"
"Don't let him get away!"
Even as I heard the shouts, something hard slammed into my back, bringing me crashing painfully to the ground.
"Police officer!" I growled, through bleeding lips. Struggled to get my ID out of my pocket, cursed again, my olive skin and black hair. Got up and ran after him, swearing.
By the time I reached the station, he was gone.
