Chapter 8
The two entered his now unfamiliar car silently. Devan clenched the steering wheel with all this strength, trying to calm himself down in the empty silence that filled the car. Alex, who sat next to him, stared out her window. The shrubs and dirt that filled her vision wasn't what interested her, though. A small smudge was still easily visible on his window. The small heart with their names in it was still in the football player's car. Grabbing a corner of her sleeve, Alex quickly wiped away the forgotten symbol of lost love as a tear replaced the smudge.
"Mr. King? Miss. Wills?" The sweet voice drifted through the waiting room, causing Alex to jolt in fear. She lifted her gaze to meet the receptionist who had called their names; who had sealed Graysen's fate. For someone who had just signaled the end of another being, her voice was very cheery.
Devan strode forward, ignoring the mourning girl who slowly trailed behind him. A minuscule part of him regretted the decision to destroy another part of him, but Devan had dreams. He knew in order to achieve his dreams, he had to cut the other one down. A hushed voice from inside whispered, "You're a fake, Devan King." He bristled but continued forward, ignoring the dagger-like words.
He sat down in the rough chair next to Alex. Her burgundy hair hung in front of her eyes, wide with fear and red from mourning. The doctor slowly entered the room, sensing the attitude of the two high school seniors in front of him. He sat down, first talking with Devan, asking him to recall all that he could about childhood trauma or distress.
Devan paused, trying to choose his words, "My dad was a great man. He was always there to cheer me on at my games or to cheer me up with a joke." The lie flooded out easily.
The doctor nodded. "Did he ever abuse you?"
"No."
The doctor than uncomfortably changed his direction to address Alex. "How do we really know this... Graysen... was speaking the truth?"
Her fists clenched, nearly shaking with rage, but she didn't answer his question. "Why are you so quick to kill another being?"
"We are not killing him, Miss. We can not kill someone who was never real to begin with." The older man's voice was patronizing as he spoke to her.
Tears threatened to fall from her eyes. "How do we define real? The time I spent with him was real, the happiness I felt around him was real."
Wrinkled lips pursed at this. "Thank you. You may leave now, Miss Wills."
With a single nod, Alex stood, sprinting outside of the darkened office and into the halls. The second she escaped the confine of the room, she sunk to the floor. Tears clouded her vision, her heart clenching with pain. Graysen, I love you.
A loud crash shook her from her position on the floor. An older woman had dropped her papers all over the slippery hospital ground. With a flustered expression plastered onto her face, she bent over to collect them, wincing at the strain. The scene stuck a cord within Alex's aching heart, reminding her of days in which she would have simply ignored the woman. Slowly rising from her seat on the floor, she walked over, helping the woman collect her papers. When they were all safely back in her arms, Alex turned without a word and strode away, exiting the building.
The man gently placed the container of pills in front of Devan, giving him a slight grimace. Reaching out a sweating hand, Devan grasped the container, spilling out a single pill.
"Once you take that pill, there is no going back." The warning struck a smirk onto Devan's face.
He chuckled at the prospect of allowing the other man to have rule of his body. Reaching out for the glass of water before him, he placed the pill in his mouth, quickly downing it. When the pill was swallowed, a searing sense of anguish which was entirely not the football player's set in, but was quickly demolished, followed only by the sense of relief that Devan felt.
Graysen was gone, replaced entirely by Devan.
