Chapter 7

A gruff voice answered the call. "Xander Rowe, who is this?"

"Hello... My name is G-Graysen..." He trailed off, looking at her to make sure he was using the right name, to which she nodded at. "Graysen... King."

"King," the man on the other end mused, "as in the son of Landon and Mia King?"

The sound of his mother's name shook Graysen, "Mia..." he murmured, having never heard her name before.

"Well?"

"Yes sir... I'm their son. And... I was wondering if I could meet you?"

They stood in front of the tan house looming in front of them, hands intertwined. Alex turned to him, "Ready, Gray?"

Composing himself he hummed a nervous yes and quickly knocked on the door. It was answered almost instantly by a petite man with a wide smile.

"You two must be Graysen and Alexandra, right?"

She nodded, not recognizing the voice, "Yes... how did you know?"

The man flushed a light red, "My... partner... told me about you two." He waved a hand dismissively, "No matter... please come in," he ushered the two inside the clean home, "My name is Milo. It's a pleasure to meet you."

They followed Milo into the living room and sat down across from him on a couch, awkwardly shifting on the soft surface. After a few tense moments, Xander stepped into the room, a slight scowl on his face. "Mia's kid, I presume?"

Graysen nodded stiffly and Xander took a seat next to Milo, stretching lazily out on the couch. "Where the fuck is Landon anyway? After your mom passed, he disappeared into thin air." At the lack of an answer, he continued, "Granted the man never did care for either of us," he gestured to Milo, "But we wanted to meet Mia's kid at least."

"Landon is dead," Graysen stated quietly.

Milo let out a low exhale, "I'm so sorry...."

"Don't be. He deserved it." Graysen's words were harsh, "I don't understand how you two could even have been friends with him."

"Friends is a bit of a stretch," Milo corrected gently, "We were friends with Mia and by default friends with Landon. He wouldn't let her out of his sight." He paused, "What do you mean by saying he deserved it."

Disgust flooded Graysen, "He beat me, every day." Alex noticed the guard he often kept up was back in place as he talked to the two. "Either my mother was just plain stupid or he was doing to her what he did to me; no one would ever want to be around that scum."

No one spoke for what seemed like an eternity. "Mia wasn't stupid... Sure he was always a bit of a dick, but none of us would have ever expected that from him, kid." He met Graysen's eyes, "I'm sure your mother didn't believe he was capable of that." He ran a hand through his dark hair, "He was infatuated with her, she was his entire world. If I had to guess, I would say that he broke when she passed and all that he had inside him broke loose."

Graysen jolted a bit, but still didn't say anything.

"I'm so sorry, Graysen." Milo whispered. "You didn't deserve this."

"How did she die?"

A haze filled Milo's eyes, "She was pregnant with you... eight months in, so close to her due date." A ghost of a smile passed over his features, "She was overjoyed to be pregnant and as hard as Landon was to read, I believe he was excited too. One night Landon had been working late and she had driven to the store to grab something when...." He trailed off, leaving it unsaid. "They could only save one of you two. If they tried for Mia like Landon so desperately wanted, you would have certainly died and the chances of her survival were already near impossible." Milo quickly blinked back his tears, "By the time we had found out, Landon was gone... and so were you."

The next night Graysen was quiet, still pondering the information. The two sat on the couch, her head on his lap as mindless TV droned on. "I deserve this. I killed my father. Stabbed him right in the chest."

Alex instantly shot up and faced him, trying to get him to look her in the eyes, but he refused to. She had already known this, but the empty was he said it was what hurt the most. Giving up she violently shook her head, opposing that statement with her entire being. "No, you don't Graysen."

He didn't answer, only standing up and facing the window, "The sun is rising."

She rose, coming to stand behind him, knowing that this would be the last time she would ever see the one she loved more than any other as Graysen. "Graysen-" He cut her off by pulling her to him and holding her closely. His arms wrapped around her waist, keeping her tightly to his trembling chest. Without a thought, she returned the embrace.

"I love you," He murmured, "Don't worry about me."

A small smile graced his lips when he saw the emotion in her eyes. Wiping the newly formed tears from her reddened eyes, she pressed her forehead into his, "I love you."

Sunlight slowly bathed the room with it's golden glow, replacing the boy in front of her completely.

Devan rose, turning to the heartbroken girl next to him. He watched her face twist in agony as she realized that it was him and not his split personality. Hot anger rushed him at the thought of being replaced by someone who wasn't even real.

He turned to Alex. "You hate me." At this, she shot him a glance laced with fury before turning back to staring at the sky.

"No, I don't. I could never hate you." Her usually clear voice was choked with emotion.

Even at her kind words, Devan could not convince himself to feel that way about the girl who sat next to him, angry at him for not risking his life for a false being. He hated her.
