Episode Seven
"Theo?" Clover asked. It was the day after the gala. "I remember him. A bit rude..."
"He was our friend," Esme said. "Or something like it." Esme rubbed her silver armband. All vampires had to wear them now.
"We have to find out who the kidnapper is."
"We tried... but we have no clues."
"Then let's find Theo," Xaria said.
"What?" Clover asked. "How? That's not-"
"It is possible," Xaria cut her off. "Vampires can smell much better than humans can. We just need something that smells like Theo. Us vampires can track him down."
"Then what will I do?" Clover asked. It sounded like she would either be tagging along or doing nothing. She wanted to help. She wanted to lead and plan.
"You can't do anything," Esme said. "Unless you're a vampire."
"No way," Clover said. She was not about to become a vampire just so she could help. It wouldn't be worth it in the end. "I'll help plan and do stuff when you guys come back."
"Okay." Esme nodded. She had a feeling Clover wouldn't want to become a vampire.
"Xaria, go by Theo's cabin and try to grab a bedsheet. Esme, go get Brooks," Clover said. "Everyone meet back here in thirty minutes."
Xaria nodded and walked off toward Moose Village. Esme turned on her heel and walked to Racoon Village.
Clover sat alone, sitting on the wooden swing. She peeled off the white paint, waiting and waiting.
Twenty minutes later, Xaria arrived with Theo's bedsheet. It was thin and plain black.
"Can you smell anything?" Clover asked.
"Faintly," Xaria said. "With Brooks and Esme's help, we can track him down."
"Don't vampires have heightened speed as well?"
"Yes, but it drains our energy twice as fast. Same with smelling." Xaria chuckled. "I'm going to take a long nap after this."
Clover let out a short sound that was somewhere between a chuckle and snort.
A moment later, Brooks and Esme arrived.
"Where is the bedsheet?" Brooks asked. Xaria grabbed the blanket from the swing and showed it to him. Brooks sniffed it twice. "Very faint..."
Brooks handed it Esme, she sniffed five times before she even smelled a thing. "Yeah, I don't think this will work..."
"It's the only thing that had his scent on it," Xaria said.
"I guess he was a clean freak or something," Esme said. Now that she thought about it, he would also get mad when he was dirty, but he was mad all the time so Esme hadn't noticed before.
"You guys can do this," Clover said. "Just don't be dumb."
"Yeah, okay," Xaria said. "We can try."
Xaria sniffed the sheet, then the air, then the sheet, then the air, again and again... Until she stepped forward.
"I think he is somewhere in the woods, north to the swings, away from the center of camp," she said.
"Lead the way," Esme said. Xaria nodded and walked slowly towards the woods, Esme and Brooks followed.
"They better stay safe," Clover mumbled. "There are many dead bodies in those woods..."
Brooks took turns sniffing Theo's blanket with Xaria. Esme trailed behind, not doing much but hiking.
An hour later, they came to a stop.
"Why'd we stop?" Esme asked.
"I can't smell anymore," Brooks said. "What preys on my mind is simply this one question: what am I good for, could I not be of service or use in some way?"
Esme took a moment to replay the words in her head. His words were always beautiful, but complicated at times. "Brooks, we will find the trail again. This wasn't for nothing... We just need to keep trying."
"I can't though," Brooks said. "I really can't. I'm exhausted... I am strong, but I am tired. This is too much." Brooks sat down beside a tree. "I'm sorry, Esme, I did everything that I could."
Esme dropped down beside his, rubbing his hand. "Brooks, I understand. Maybe I could scent track... Do you have the energy to walk?"
Brooks closed his eyes. "Give me ten minutes."
Xaria nodded, sitting down by a different tree. "Give me some time too."
"Okay," Esme said. "I'll look for berries to eat. It's about lunchtime."
Brooks and Xaria nodded, so Esme walked off. As Esme walked, she started to notice little dots of red on the ground. Soon, she came across a pool of blood.
Esme ran away, screaming. Even as a vampire, blood made her queasy. Bodily fluids had always made her want to puke.
"What's wrong?" Brooks asked, standing up.
"There is a pool of blood up ahead!" Esme exclaimed.
"Really?" Brooks asked. "Oh gosh... It might lead to Theo! Or the others that were kidnapped."
"They must be hurt," Xaria said.
"Or dead," Esme said darkly.
"We need to go look for them," Brooks said. "Esme, can you scent track for a little while?"
"I could try," she responded.
Brooks handed her Theo's sheet.
Xaria stood up. "Okay, let's go."
Esme sniffed the sheet awkwardly and sniffed the air. After a few times, she could smell the scent in the direction of the blood.
After some time, they got to the pool of blood. Esme gripped onto Brooks' hand tightly. They didn't need the blanket anymore. They just needed to follow the pool of blood.
Soon, they faced a wall of ivy. At first Esme thought it was natural, but when she looked at it closer, she found that it wasn't.
Esme brushed back the ivy to find a ladder. She, followed by Brooks and Xaria, climbed up the ladder.
Her eyes widened when she realized who was inside and what they were doing.
Sitting on top of a pile of deflated dead bodies was Kiwi and Smoke, basically eating each other's lips. Entangled, they were so close they could clearly hear nothing besides each other's frequent moans.
"We'll feed for years," Kiwi slurred together gravely. Smoke chuckled.
Esme barfed a little in her mouth. The others came up the ladder just in time for Kiwi to begin to rub Smoke's chest.
"Kiwi?" Xaria asked.
The two looked at us, their backs at each other. They quickly stood up.
"Get out!" Smoke yelled, he picked up a rock and tossed it. "GET OUT!"
Esme didn't need to be told twice. She rushed down the ladder first, Xaria and Brooks trailing behind. They dashed away, trying to find their way back to camp. But they had only gone down the trail once.
"We're lost," Esme panted.
"What are we going to do?" Brooks asked.
