Chapter 25
Roger's P.O.V.
My heart felt like it was about to leap out of my chest as Amelia's lips inched closer and closer to mine - the temptation to just grab her face and kiss her right here and there becoming almost unbearable. I'd managed to resist the urge all day, but now that I had the perfect opportunity, I don't think I could for any longer. Our faces were barely centimetres apart now. This is it, Roger, don't fuck it up I thought to myself. But before anything else could follow, something occurred which completely destroyed the moment.
'Roger, Amelia! There you two are - we've been looking for you everywhere.' I heard Freddie's voice call out to us.
Oh, for fuck's sake.
I glared at the singer, who was followed by the rest of the group, as Lee and I pulled back from each other and stood there trying to act like nothing had happened just seconds ago.
Clearing my throat, I made up some rubbishy excuse as to what took us so long ,'Yeah, we, uh, got a little held back. Sorry.'
Freddie raised an eyebrow at us before shrugging it off, 'Well...at least we found you.'
Luckily, nobody questioned us any further as Brian announced it was time we thought about heading back to Rusper.
'It's getting pretty late, guys,' he told us as he looked down at his watch, 'We should perhaps start making our way back to the van, seeing as everyone's here now.'
'That's probably a good idea,' Freddie agreed with him. He started walking, before turning to us again, 'C'mon you two lovebirds, that includes you and all.'
Reluctantly, Lee and I tagged along behind the rest of the group as we followed them to the end of the pier and back onto the street. As we walked back to the van, I looked at Lee who had her arms crossed over her chest and was still looking extremely flustered and embarrassed. Not wanting there to be any awkwardness between us, I wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close, rubbing her arm to reassure her that everything was okay. She looked up at me and smiled, instantly relaxing and also putting my mind at ease. Once we'd finally made it back to the car park, the boys said goodbye to their other halves.
'Are you sure you girls don't want a lift? We're heading in that direction anyway.' John asked.
'You're alright, love. Chrissie took her car with her so we'll get home just fine.' Veronica assured him, 'I'll see you tomorrow, yeah?'
John nodded and gave her a hug and a kiss, before climbing into the front seat of the van. Brian approached Chrissie and did the same, before clambering into the van too. After Lee and Charlotte exchanged farewells with the girls, I said goodbye but before I could join the rest of them, I felt someone take ahold of my arm and pull me to the side which stopped me in my tracks. I turned around to see Veronica who was looking at me seriously.
'Listen, Roger, the others might be none the wiser about what happened at the pier, but I know what I saw. You were going to kiss Amelia, weren't you?'
I shook my head and shifted nervously on the spot, 'N-no, what makes you think that?'
'Oh, c'mon, I'm not blind - you might as well have shouted it to the world it was that obvious,' she chuckled, as I stood there with a frown on my face and my cheeks turned red. Veronica stopped laughing and became serious again.
'Look, I'm not making fun of you, okay. I know that staying in a relationship with someone isn't really...you, but I hope you know Amelia's one of the good ones. She's a really lovely girl, Rog. And she seems to like you a lot. It would be a real shame to let her go.'
I looked down at the ground before glancing up at Lee who was sitting in the van chatting away to Charlotte, laughing and smiling as they showed each other the clothes they'd bought today. Turning my attention back to Veronica, she patiently waited for my reply.
'Yeah, I know,' I sighed, 'I just...wish we could have had longer.'
'I understand,' Veronica nodded, 'But you know what they say - love knows no boundaries. If this is the real thing, even if you do have to say goodbye for now, eventually she'll come back to you.'
'I suppose you could be right.' I smiled, 'Thanks, Veronica.'
'No problem, Roger. See you soon.' she replied with a smile before her and Chrissie said one last goodbye to us all and started walking away as they disappeared around the corner of the street until we could no longer see them. Clambering into the back of the van, I slid the door shut behind me, before planting myself down on the seat next to Amelia.
'You okay?' she asked, innocently.
'Yeah, yeah,' I nodded, getting comfortable in my seat, 'Why'd you ask?'
She shrugged, 'No reason, it's just you and Veronica were talking about something out there and it looked quite serious. There's not a problem, is there?'
'Oh, no. No,' I was quick to respond, 'She was just, um, giving me advice on my hair. Reckons that I should dye it blonder.'
'Really?' she giggled, 'Well, that'd definitely be something worth seeing.'
I'll admit, I felt bad about lying to Lee about Veronica's and I's conversation, but I didn't think it was particularly necessary for her to know what we were talking about anyway - not to mention I didn't want to cause any more embarrassment today than I already had. So I didn't bother, and decided to keep it to myself, although, in my head I was mulling over Veronica's words and I soon realised how right she'd actually been...
The drive back to Ridge Farm didn't feel as long as the way down to Brighton, but it was tiresome all the same. The van was stifling hot for the first leg of the journey, even with all the windows open, as we tried using old magazines that had been stashed away in the back of the seats as fans, desperately trying to keep cool.
Once the van was at a more bearable temperature, we could actually enjoy the ride as we all chatted away to each other about what we did, the boys explaining how they'd been the fair earlier in the day etc. Lee also showed them some of the photos she'd taken, including the ones of me, which were far from flattering. and they spared no time in taking the piss out of me when they saw them, but I took the insults well nonetheless.
However, after a while, the conversation started to fizzle out when the fatigue eventually kicked in. We all sat half asleep (apart from Brian who had no choice but to stay alert) as the heat didn't do any favours either. My eyes soon became heavy and eventually shut as I my rested my head on the back of the seat and sighed. All I could make out were the flashes of light coming in through the windows as we drove along; the motion and sound of the van strangely soothing. But before I drifted off, I felt a light pressure on my right shoulder which made me open my eyes.
Sleeping soundly next to me was Lee, who's head was gently rested on my shoulder as she remained in a deep slumber. I looked down at her, trying my best not to make any sudden movements and startle her, as I carefully tucked a loose strand of hair that had fallen in front of her face out of the way.
As I did, my agonising thoughts didn't take long to replay in my head again. What had I done? The plan, when we miraculously got a place to record at Ridge Farm, had been to go there and rehearse and make progress on the new album. Not to meet a girl and become completely infatuated by her.
But that's exactly what had happened. And now the very idea of leaving Lee behind tomorrow made me feel ill, especially after being so close to kissing her. Part of me resented myself for falling for someone I only met a few weeks ago - I should have known better with the obvious outcome of having to leave her in the end. But I couldn't help how I felt. Not now. And believe me, it was more than just a simple crush.
Amelia suddenly stirred in her sleep, which snapped me out of my thoughts. Once she'd settled again, a wave of sadness came over me as I realised how much was going to miss her. God, I was crazy about this girl - there was no denying it - and the last thing I wanted to do was to was leave her behind. Hopefully what Veronica had said about her coming back to me one day was true.
Sighing, I rested my head against Lee's and closed my eyes as I began to feel extremely drowsy. But before I drifted off into a deep sleep, I caught Freddie smirking and making a love heart shape with his hands at the two of us, to which I reacted to by mouthing at him: 'Shut up'.
Amelia's P.O.V.
The next thing I knew, we were parked outside the familiar farmhouse as the harsh sunlight blinded me when I opened my eyes, having awoken from my slumber.
'Wakey, wakey!' Charlotte sat forward and practically yelled in my face, almost scaring me half to death. Well, I was definitely awake now.
I rubbed my eyes and sat up straight again as everyone climbed out of the van one by one. When I'd finally composed myself and started collecting my stuff, I looked to my left to see I hadn't been resting my head against the seat when I was asleep like I had first thought at all. Instead, I'd been using Roger's shoulder as a pillow during the journey (not that I was complaining); the fact I'd fallen asleep on him making my face turn bright red.
Nevertheless, I couldn't help but crack a smile at the drummer next to me, who was somehow still snoring away - even after Charlotte's shouting. I nudged him with my elbow hard enough it would wake him up, which he responded to by suddenly lurching forward in his seat, with his sunglasses sitting squint on his face.
'Wha-where..?' he mumbled, as he tried to figure out what was going on.
'We're back in Rusper.' I told him, chuckling, as I grabbed my bag and got out of the van, waiting for him to follow, 'You coming?'
Slowly, he clambered rather inelegantly out of the van, repositioned his sunglasses on his face, and shut the door behind him as we rejoined the rest of the group who'd already headed inside. We all met up in the kitchen where I offered everyone some much needed cold drinks, which they gladly accepted, especially after just being stuck in a heat trap on wheels for well over an hour. We continued to chat amongst ourselves for a while, until Charlotte announced that she had to head home, so we made our way back outside to see her off.
'It was an absolute honour meeting you guys,' Charlotte told the band, 'Thank you for taking me with you on your little road trip.'
'Aw, no worries, dear. We loved having you there. And it was really lovely to meet you too,' Freddie smiled as he gave her a quick hug. He then gave her a slip of paper. I couldn't see what was on it at first, but it was pretty clear when he smiled flirtatiously and told her, 'Give me a call sometime.'
Whilst Charlotte looked like she had just died and gone to heaven, she gave the rest of the boys a hug too, before she approached me.
'I don't really need to give you a hug because I'll be seeing you tomorrow morning at work anyway, but what the hell!' she giggled as she wrapped her arms around me and hugged me tightly. She then whispered in my ear, sounding like she was tearing up, 'Thank you, Lee. For today. Really, thank you.'
Pulling back, I looked at my friend and realised just how much today had meant to her. I was glad I was able to help make her wish of meeting her favourite band come true - I knew it would be a day she'd treasure forever. Smiling, I replied, 'You're very welcome, Char.'
She gave me one last hug and smiled and waved to the band, before getting into her little Beetle and starting up the engine. She beeped the horn at us as she drove down the long driveway and pulled out onto the road, the yellow car soon disappearing into the distance. As the guys began to make their way back towards the house, I pulled Roger aside.
'Um, Rog?'
'Yeah?'
Looking down at my hands for a split second, my eyes met with his as as I gazed up at him, 'I just, uh, wanted to say thank you again for today. I had lots of fun, I really appreciated it.'
He smiled, 'It was no problem at all. And I had fun too; more than I've had in a long time. I'm just glad you enjoyed yourself.'
'I did,' I nodded as a small silence developed between us, the two of us suddenly becoming extremely shy and awkward; not that I didn't know why. After a minute of little talking, I cleared my throat.
'Listen, I'm going to inside and get freshened up - better do something about this disaster,' I referred to my makeup and windswept hair, 'I'll see you...well, whenever, I guess. I'm sure we'll cross paths before the end of the day at least.'
Roger chuckled, 'I'm sure we will.'
Before I disappeared inside, I shyly stepped forward until I was standing directly in front of him. Cupping half of his face with my hand, I went up on my tip-toes and placed a gentle kiss on Roger's cheek. It lasted longer than I'd planned, mainly because I didn't want it to end and part of me wished I'd had the confidence to have kissed him on the lips. I pulled back, looking at Roger who was smiling at me as I kept my hand placed on his other cheek for just a little bit longer. Removing my hand, I gave him one last brave smile before I made my way towards the house, trying my best to ignore the pang of sadness I felt my heart as I walked through the door.
*
That night, I lay in bed, skimming through the photos I took with my camera, whilst thinking about everything that had happened today. I'd had a fantastic time with Roger, and I'd enjoyed every minute of it, but what almost took place back at the pier had been tormenting me ever since it occurred.
I'd never felt so many emotions at once like that before - excitement, terror, happiness, doubt. To be honest, I wasn't even sure if it was happening at the time because I was in so much shock, and the more I thought about it now, the more I was starting to think maybe I'd just made up the whole scenario in my head. But it did happen. Well, almost. And I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't have wanted it to. Shame the timing couldn't have been better...
In the midst of raking through my thoughts, I hadn't noticed the door being pushed open by Jasper, who came wandering into the room with his tail wagging behind him.
'Hey, buddy,' I smiled as he approached the bed, his adorable face beaming up at me, 'I know it drives Mum insane when I let you on the bed, but what she doesn't know won't hurt her. Come on, get up here.'
In one effortless movement, Jasper climbed up onto the bed and lay down and snuggled up next to me as I stroked his long, golden coat - I really needed this right now. After a while of comfortable silence and more reflection, I sighed heavily, whilst looking up at the ceiling.
'I've done something really stupid, Jasp.' I said to the Golden Retriever as I pet his head affectionately. I reached over to the pile of photos and picked up the one of Roger and I standing on the pier and gazed longingly at it.
'I've fallen completely head over heels for Roger Taylor.'

Hello again!
I'm so sorry for making you wait 25 agonising chapters and still no kiss between Roger and Amelia...maybe soon 😂 Anyway, I hope you liked this, sorry if it's too cringy or long winded. Only two more chapters until the end - I'm not looking forward seeing this book finish. But it's been a joy to write so it was totally worth it. Anyway, if you enjoyed this part then a vote/comment would be great, and I guess I'll see you all in the next one.
Thanks again!
- Anna :-)
