Chapter 24
Roger's P.O.V.
Once the waltzer cars had ground to a halt, Amelia and I pushed the bar up so we could get out and, slowly, started making our way down the steps towards the gate. Still extremely dizzy, we held onto each other in case either of us fell, which almost happened when Lee missed a step and nearly went head over heels down the rest.
'Whoa, careful!' I laughed as I quickly caught her in time.
'Sorry,' she replied in a fit of giggles as she stood upright again, 'Jesus Christ, everything's spinning. I feel like I'm drunk.'
I smirked, 'Believe me, we all know how that feels.'
As we started walking, I glanced over at Lee who was now suddenly doubled over and taking a lot of deep breaths. I put a hand on her back, 'You alright? You're not going to be sick, are you?'
'No, I'm just, uh, feeling a little light-headed, that's all,' she stood up straight again, 'I'll be fine.'
I looked at her concerned, 'Do you want to sit down for a minute or two?'
She paused momentarily before nodding in agreement to my suggestion. We made our way towards the nearest unoccupied bench and sat down, as Lee closed her eyes and sat forward with her elbows rested on her knees, still looking as pale as a sheet.
'I'm sorry for putting you on such an aggressive ride and making you ill.' I looked at her, feeling guilty as I continued to rub her back soothingly.
She chuckled lightly, 'It's alright, Rog. It's not your fault. Amusement park rides just don't agree with me.'
'You should have said, we didn't have to go on the waltzers if you didn't want to.'
Lee looked up at me with an eyebrow raised, 'And let you stand there bold as brass thinking I was scared of them? No chance.'
I laughed as I stared at her in disbelief, 'So you'd rather go on a fairground ride and make yourself sick than to admit you're afraid?'
'You got that right,' she stated, 'Besides, I actually really enjoyed it surprisingly enough. Well, up until the aftermath, that is.'
'I knew you'd like it in the end.' I said, gently nudging her shoulder as she smiled down at the ground.
After Amelia had made a full recovery from her motion sickness, we went to the arcade for a bit (where we ended up being just as competitive as we were earlier) before gradually making our way back to the start of the pier. Despite being the late afternoon, the warm weather showed no sign of fading, apart from the fact the wind had picked up, which was even more blustery than before. Whilst we strolled along the walkway together, Lee suddenly stopped after seeing something had caught her eye.
'Look, ice cream!' she exclaimed as she grabbed my hand and dragged me towards the ice cream stand situated ahead of us. I chuckled at her over-excitement.
'Remind me what age did you turn last Saturday again?'
Lee didn't seem very impressed by my joke, 'Shut up, everyone knows there's no such thing as being too old for ice cream; it's a well known fact.'
'Fair enough,' I admitted, 'I'm guessing you're feeling better now, too?'
'Of course I am...then again I'd probably run a marathon just for ice cream,' she stated, 'Now you wait here whilst I go and get us some - the least I can do is pay for that. What are you wanting?'
I shrugged, 'Anything, I'm not fussy.'
Lee nodded before joining the queue as I stood nearby and had a smoke. After a couple of minutes, she returned with two ice cream cones in hand and gave one to me, which I thanked her for.
'I wonder where the others are at? I haven't seen them the whole time we've been wandering around.' Lee told me.
The others - I'd completely forgotten about them. Whoops.
'Dunno, I haven't spotted them either.' I replied, 'Perhaps they're looking around the shops or they're back at the beach again.'
She nodded, 'You could be right.'
We continued walking along the pier as we chatted away to each other, until the two of us soon found ourselves stopping and looked out onto the stunning blue sea. We stood side by side with our shoulders touching as we leant against the railings, taking in the mesmerising view around us.
'Beautiful, isn't it?' I interrupted the peaceful silence between us. Lee jumped slightly when I spoke up; obviously awakening her from the daydream she was in as she cleared her throat.
'Yeah,' she said simply, 'Gorgeous...'
I could tell by the change of tone in her voice that something wasn't right, 'Lee, what's the matter? Are you feeling sick again?'
'No, no, it's not that it's...actually, there's nothing wrong, Roger. Just ignore me.' she laughed nervously as she took a bite of her ice cream and turned away from me.
I wasn't convinced.
'Amelia.' I said seriously, trying to get her attention. She slowly turned her head so I could just see the side of her face as I looked at her sympathetically, 'Tell me what's up.'
After much persuasion and a lot of apprehension, Lee finally opened up to me, 'It's just that...well...today's been really lovely and I appreciate everything you've done. Taking me out to lunch, putting up with me wanting to go shopping, going to the fair - the lot. You know that, right?'
'Of course I do,' I said. I couldn't help but feel there was a 'but' coming soon.
'But,' There it was, '...it still doesn't change the fact that tomorrow...you're leaving.'
My heart sank as reality hit me like a tonne of bricks. I'd been avoiding the thought of what was to come the best I could, using the trip here to distract myself (and Lee as well) from tomorrow's events. But she was right. It didn't change the fact that we would have to part ways when the morning came, with the next time we'd see each other being god knows when. Yes, we would both be in London, but our busy lives would be a huge obstacle when it came to staying in contact. And this was something the two of us didn't want to accept.
'Talk about putting a downer on things, eh?' Lee mumbled as she fiddled with the bracelets around her wrists.
'Hey, don't be silly. Of course you haven't,' I assured her, resting my hand on top of hers and rubbing the back of it gently with my thumb, 'I know neither of us want to think about tomorrow, but we'll see each other again soon. I mean, we're living in the same city, for god's sake! You're not going to get rid of me that easily.'
A smile appeared on Lee's lips again as she chuckled lightly, 'I suppose that is true. Doesn't mean I'm not going to miss you, though.'
I looked at her surprised but endeared by her statement, 'Really?'
She nodded timidly, 'I've really come to like you, Roger. Probably more than I thought I would,' she admitted as the wind blew through her hair, 'I'm glad we met.'
I smiled warmly at her, 'So am I.'
The two of us stood in silence for a short while, just enjoying the the view of the beach and the sounds around us as we finished our ice creams. Once we had, I heard Lee gasp quietly beside me as she took her camera out of her bag again and set it up.
'I've just realised that we haven't gotten a photo together yet.' she told me.
'Well,' a smile spread across my lips, 'We'd better change that then.'
She smiled back at me before leaving my side and shyly approaching a middle aged woman who was walking by with her kids.
'Excuse me, would you mind taking a photo of us?' Lee asked her.
'Not at all.' the woman replied, before Lee handed her the camera and quickly rejoined me next to the railings.
Putting an arm around me, she leant into my side whilst I wrapped my arm around her waist. I tried to keep my attention on the camera, but I couldn't help but look at Lee standing next to me in awe as I waited for the photo to be taken. Managing to take my eyes off her for a moment, I smiled at the camera as the woman took the picture. She walked ovet to us and handed the camera back to Lee - who thanked her - along with the photo itself. We stayed standing in the same spot as we analysed the photo of us thoroughly.
'We don't look too bad at all.' I was the first to comment. Lee looked up at me with a 'seriously?' expression on her face.
'Are you kidding me? Look at my hair, it's all over the place! And my makeup. Fucking hell, I knew it was bad but I didn't know it was that bad!'
I shook my head, chuckling, 'There is nothing wrong with your hair or makeup, Lee. You look beautiful.'
'You're just saying that because you don't have the guts to tell me I look like a wreck,' she frowned.
'Is that right?' I raised an eyebrow at her, 'Well, even if you did, I can assure you, it wouldn't make a difference to me.'
She looked up at me suspiciously, 'You really are quite the smooth talker, aren't you, Rog?'
I smirked, 'It's what I do best.'
Our eyes stayed fixed on one another as we fell into silence again, a moment of tension developing between us. We gazed at each other intently, neither of us daring to say anything or make any sudden movements.
That was, until the next thing I knew, the two of us slowly began to lean in...

Leaving it on a cliffhanger - oh I am cruel, haha! I hope you liked this chapter, which I managed to post within the same week as the last update - a new achievement for me I must say. Anyway, I'm going to sleep now as it's late (sorry if there are any errors if there is I'll fix them tomorrow) and I need to be up pretty early so good night from Scotland!
