Chapter Four

"Where have you been?" George asked, Fred once he returned from the diner, still feeling awful for Giselle and the pain her family must be going through.

Fred looked up to see his brother, who was sitting in the dark with only one lamp on despite the teasing sunrise, muggle movie style.

"Just went for a walk."

"Really, Fred?" George asked. "I don't believe that for a second. I've also noticed you missing at breakfast most mornings, you didn't think for a second you could hide this from me, right? What are you hiding?"

"Nothing."

"Fred," George asked again, his eyes showing the first signs of anger. "We promised each other that we wouldn't lie to each other ever, at the age of three. I haven't broken that promise yet and I don't think you have either."

"Ok, fine. I've been meeting up with someone. We met by accident at a diner down the road and I've met up with her every night since. She's actually not staying far from here."

"Her?"

"Yeah, you should meet her, George. She's incredibly funny and friendly but with a fierce temper, she's amazing."

George looked on with amusement laced with concern. "What about Angelina?"

Fred looked to his twin with shock. "It's not like that."

"Whatever you say, brother, whatever you say."

Giselle entered the house where her family was staying only to jump slightly when she saw her whole family gathered in the living room.

"Where have you been?" Jacqueline asked the girl, body shaking with rage.

"I told you, mother," Claudette claimed proudly. "She's doing shady stuff."

"Well, I don't care what you are doing, Giselle or who with. Nor do I wish to know." She said waving off Claudette as she opened her mouth to no doubt throw Giselle under the bus even further. "I forbade you from leaving this house during the night again. But as I was staying before you decided to grace us with your presence, we are holding a family meeting and I was most shocked to find you not in your bed, where you were supposed to be."

Giselle hung her head in shame while inside her body was screaming of this injustice, she wasn't doing anything wrong. "Sorry, mother. Won't happen again."

"As you lot already know, your grandfather died in his bed this morning and I was not by his side in his final moments because your father demanded that we take this holiday."

"Hang on, Jacqueline, you've had a tough few days, your grief could be clouding your judgment." Corentin hurried forward, trying to diffuse the tension.

"That's not your decision to make, Corentin," Jacqueline said spitting out her husband's name with such a venom that shocked everyone else in the room.

However, she soon turned back to her children. "We are leaving back home for France, tomorrow. Pack your things quickly and efficiently as we will not be returning back to this dreary place for any reason."

What was happening right now?

Jacqueline stormed out of the room, Mason and Claudette trailing behind her, leaving Giselle alone in the room with her father.

"What was all of that about, dad?" Giselle asked with concern.

"I don't even know myself, Gi," Corentin responded, using his nickname for his daughter as a way to calm his own fear about what was happening to their family. "Your mother just needs some time to cool down, that's all. It will all work out itself."

Giselle was nearly seventeen years old and she knew exactly what was happening to their family, she just didn't know what was causing it, even though she had her suspicions. However, rather than voicing them and causing her and her father even more pain, she settled into her father's arms, shutting her eyes trying to pretend that she was younger, and her family was happy and not so fragile.

Despite her mother's warning to not leave the house in the middle of the night again. Giselle crept out again, praying her mother or sister wouldn't catch her.

Fred deserved an explanation, her newly found friend, needed to know what was going on and why she would never see him again.

"Giselle." Fred greeted her as she walked through the door, with a lopsided smile.

"Fred." Giselle greeted back. "Can we sit? I don't have long?" Giselle quickly said, her eyes scanning the dark street outside the diner.

"You don't want to order first?"

"Fred, I can't. I'm not staying long."

A look of concern flickered across his features. "What happened, Giselle?"

"Let's just say my family finally cracked in two. And my mother has officially gone insane. I'm moving back to France in a matter of hours. We won't be able to see each other again. Thank you for whatever this was while it lasted. I'm sorry." Giselle said quickly before disappearing out of the diner.

Fred rushed after her. "Giselle! Wait!" He called after her. "We didn't swap addresses."
