Chapter 1
Ashur Adeoye's dark-skinned hands loosened on the steering wheel. The windows were rolled down, the wind whipping everyone's hair. Honolulu's countryside is so refreshing, especially since Hawaii has so many tourists on every island. "To the beach we go!"
"Hell yeah!" Lindsey 'Lin' Xiaoling screamed out the window to scare a tourist bus. She was a tall Chinese girl with a pixie cut of black hair. When Ashur first met her, he thought, I can't believe someone can have so many 'Lin's in their name. While Lindsey was her English name, Lin was her Chinese name and nickname. "I can't wait!"
"You're all so impatient," Indira Singh snapped, going back to her book, A Good Girl's Guide To Murder. The group dubbed the FFs (Fantastic Fives), all knew that she was so snappish because she truly wished Ravi Sigh was her husband. Indira had light brown skin and outrageously curly hair which she always complained about.
"Lighten up, Indy," Marcel said coolly, next to Ashur. In the head view mirrors, Ashur saw Indira's cheeks go pink. It was so obvious that they liked each other, but it was also so cliché that they didn't confess. Indy was a nickname that Marcel only used for Indira to make her feel special.
Marcel Fontaine was the anti-stereotype of a French person, except he is French, just without the accent. "Erwin, how's it back there with the girls?"
"I'm gay, remember?" Erwin Holland snorted as the others burst out laughing. "And it's just fine."
Erwin is your typical scrawny American guy, but really shy. He was the newest member of the FFs but was slowly finding his place. Also, he was often referenced as Tom Holland because of his last name.
He had the palest of skin and had dark brown eyes. Ashur pulled himself together, clearing his throat. "We'll have the best second summer yet, FFs."
It was a joke between them, they called winters in Honolulu as 'second summers' since there was rarely any snow. "Of course," Lin agreed, raking her olive-skinned fingers through her black hair. "Why would this year be any different?"
Because everything was changing, Ashur swallowed hard, pushing away the harsh words. Everyone was turning eighteen soon and would go their separate ways. Lindsey got her scholarship to an Ivy League, MIT. Indira was going to Harvard University since her parents demanded it.
Marcel usually doesn't come to Honolulu often, he lives in Paris with his grandma. Ashur sometimes wonders what life would be like off the island and on the mainland, but doesn't think about it much longer. Marcel would probably get swamped with school and forget to travel to Honolulu to visit the FFs. The same would happen to Lin and Indira, it was a horrifying thought.
Erwin was staying in Honolulu, thank God, but he lived in the tourist-like of the island. Ashur chewed the insides of his cheeks, not wanting to accept the fact that his friends were leaving him soon. Ashur was often the odd one out since he wasn't going to an amazing university in the mainland, he was going to community college.
If this was their last 'second summer' together, Ashur wanted to make it count. That's why they all agreed to check out a new and closed-off beach rather than their go-to Waikiki Beach (which was always full of people). "Don't worry, Lin."
Marcel kicked on his legs on the dashboard. "I'm going to take a nap—"
"Feet off the dashboard or my pa is going to kill me," Ashur warned.
The feet went back down. "Fine, Ash."
Indira squinted through her red-rimmed glasses. "God, are we there yet?"
"Indy, you have to stop asking that every five minutes," Marcel sighed loudly, rubbing his eyes.
Lin stuck out her tongue. "Now who's the impatient one, Indy?"
