❝ actually, i think it's not bad after all- ❞
kageyama knew that he wasn't good at maintaining relationships. betrayal, sadness and countless of depressing terms haunted him right after he graduated from middle school. the fact that his teammates despised him, how they turned their backs away, and how their eyes showed no emotions when they left kageyama alone in the dark. he could hear people talking behind his back, giggling as their fingers pointed at him. he tried to apologize, hoping that his explanation would let them consider in letting him become a part of the team again. but they didn't come looking after him. they never would. he felt as if the air in his lungs were sucked out, struggling to breathe. he vividly remembered the day when he cried on your shoulders. you scooted closer to him, caressing his soft raven hair as you listened to his sniffles. from that day onwards, his love for you grew even stronger. he decided to keep this secret to himself but alas, everyone seemed to know about it.
kageyama searched the darkening sky, stretching his neck in every direction to see the star. he gazed at them all to see if one of them was his special star. he found it extremely ridiculous when you told him about your silly superstitions about star wishes and such. he never believed in these kind of things, and yet he secretly kept it in his mind. kageyama couldn't imagine living a life without you. you guys knew each other since elementary school and now his desires were slightly overflowing—kageyama wanted you all to himself. his cheeks were still a little red due to the incident that happened 10 minutes ago. you kissed him on the cheek. he nearly passed out when he felt something soft press against his skin. kageyama wanted to grab you, or even chase after you, but he didn't have the guts to do so. he was confused, what if you told him that it was a friendly kiss? who knew? you major in excuses. the poor boy seemed to believe every single word that you said to him.
he began to track the pebble along the roadside, kicking it and let out a sigh of annoyance. his mind was all about you, the hint was obvious, isn't it? but he didn't dare to make the first move, kageyama wasn't good in expressing his feelings. it was hard for him to spill out all of his pent-up emotions, and he would rather stay quiet and wait for the right time to come.
kageyama and you were complete opposites.
if you liked them, you would tell them. it was as simple as that. you took advantage of your personality to confess to the person whom you liked, but having an aggressive nature was good and bad at the same time. you were brave enough to be yourself, but you wouldn't care so much of how people thought about you but these were the disadvantages that lead them to view you in a different perspective. they might see you as an impulsive girl, someone who didn't think twice. you acted way too boldly in front of your crush. and now you regretted your actions. kageyama was no ordinary crush, he was also your best friend. there's no limit to how complicated things could get, but this? it was over your boundaries. you threw your bag on the floor as you immediately sat on the bed. you slapped your forehead and screamed at the top of your lungs, and your mom knocked on your door before loudly telling you not to disturb the neighbours.
"so fucking annoying," you sighed.
you switched off your phone, not wanting to get distracted by messages or notifications.
"i really hate to wait for answers."

If there were only eight letters,
Why is it so hard to say?
"confess? bet."
you came to school earlier than usual. messages and a lot of emails popped out together when you switched on your mobile device. the only thing that caught your attention was 4 missed calls and 20 messages, coming from your crush—kageyama tobio. you put your tuna sandwich away and quickly tapped inside only to see him spamming moomin stickers and asking you to pick up his phone calls.
"i miss your voice, dumbass..." this was the last message that he had sent to you. your heart raced in response and you covered your mouth to prevent making weird noises as you're too excited about the fact that kageyama actually cared for you. it's true that best friends cared for each other, right? but kageyama tobio acted so differently for the past few weeks. even though his actions were painfully obvious, already giving you a few hints and there, you couldn't make your own decision yet. you growled in frustration, a few of your classmates didn't dare to talk to you, assuming that you're in a bad mood now. you need to settle this issue quickly as it had been bothering you for weeks.
"good morning, (y/n)-san."
yachi smiled warmly at you but you didn't respond to her greeting. you suddenly grabbed her wrist and this startled the yellow-haired female, and in response she let out a squeak and looked at you nervously.
"(y-y/n)? what-"
you interrupted her and asked, "yachi, yes or no? what would you choose?"
you felt a little guilty for being so forceful and fierce all of a sudden, but you couldn't help it. you're clueless of what to do next, and you're depending on her answer to see which direction that she will lead you to. this was extremely risky.
"u-uh...yes?" she answered timidly,
you gulped loudly and looked at her, "wish me luck, yachi."
· · · · ♡
you deserve to hear them a thousand times.
"stay calm, stay calm-"
kageyama tobio was your best friend and there's nothing to be ashamed about liking him, right? the hints were 75% accurate, and definitely not 100% as you did not have the confidence to assume kageyama liked you in that way. you hoped he will take the first move, but the chances of him spilling out his feelings to you were zero. yes, you're the aggressive type, but you found it a little awkward when you tried to confess to him first. you took a deep breath and walked towards his class, it was now recess time and you could hear your heart beating against your chest rapidly, you clutched on your uniform tightly as you peeked through the window, only to see that kageyama was drinking his milk while talking to his classmates.
"(y/n)!!" hinata tapped on your shoulder as you quickly turned around and covered his mouth, your face turned pale when kageyama was standing there looking at the both of you with a confused expression. you could feel his eyes linger on you, and soft pink hues tainted across his cheeks when he realized that he was looking at your lips, specifically. the oranged-haired male waved at him enthusiastically, asking kageyama to join him for lunch.
"uh...hinata. i need to talk to kageyama so...can you eat with yachi today?"
you quickly waved him goodbye and dragged kageyama to the rooftop, and you're surprised that he didn't say anything. you're holding his wrist, and he could feel the warmth of your palms, even though your hands were starting to get clammy and sweaty. kageyama didn't mind one bit. you pushed the glass door open as you sighed in relief, glad that there was no one at the rooftop eating their lunch. you quickly let go of his hand and smiled awkwardly.
"s-sorry, i-"
kageyama then grabbed your hand, palm to palm, before lacing both of your fingers together and let out a shaky breath. your breath hitched as you attempted to run away. you're so embarrassed and you didn't know what to do.
"dumbass, look at me."
you hesitantly turned around to face him, he was nowhere better—the tip of his ears were red and he was struggling to form a sentence now. his hands were slightly shaking and you waited patiently for him to say something. unfortunately you did not expect that he would ask you about the "thing" that you did to him last night.
"w-why did you kissed me yesterday?"
"..."
"it's because i like you?" you continued, ignoring the heavy blush that appeared on your cheeks.
"kageyama, i still like you even though you like volleyball more than me! i just realized that i have feelings for you and...it was not temporary. i- i really like you, more than just a friend, i found it adorable when you smiled and - the way of how you slowly leaning towards me-"
kageyama interrupted you impatiently. his lips found yours as he pressed against them softly. wrapping his arms around your waist, he pulled you closer. the kiss was sensual like butterfly wings. it was long enough for him to inhale your breath, feel the warmth of your skin and the taste of your strawberry lip balm lingered on his mouth. he pulled away, his forehead resting against yours as he looked at you lovingly.
"kageyama-"
"(y/n), i like you too. i really, really like you." his face was just inches away, he bit his lip and asked, "can i kiss you again?" you nodded and smiled at him.
you wish some moments could last forever.
