Chapter 2

Arthur walked out of the dorm building and began walking to breakfast. As he walked he heard a loud slap, followed by what sounded like a voice on the verge of yelling, but was too far to make out what was being said.

"That sounds like mama! Let's go check on her," Sylvie cried out excitedly.

"Good thing she can't hear you call her that," Art replied as he shook his head and started walking in the direction they heard Tess.

"Don't worry, I'll call her that one day so she can hear me. Besides, you two are meant for each other," Sylvie teased as she laid flat on his head.

As they reached the corner of the building they peaked around the corner just in time to see a sharpened vine from Tess pointed right at Clive. Even though Arthur was curious as to what he did to get a taste of the elf princesses furry, he did take a bit of satisfaction seeing someone else finally doing something to shut him up.

Clive had been a thorn in Arthur's side since day one, although on day one Clive did have a bit of a reason. Despite that, ever since Clive seemed to be hell bent on getting in Arthur's business and trying to get him expelled every chance he could. Most times Arthur would just flex his mana a little bit to apply some pressure to get rid of him. Tess always had Arthur's back, so whenever Clive tried to get Tess to go to Director Goodsky to deal with Arthur she would just shoot Clive down and tell him to leave Arthur alone. And when Clive went behind Tess' back to speak with the Director directly, the Director would always respond telling him that if Tess didn't feel the need to bother her that he shouldn't either, or would scold him for going over Tess' head.

A second or two after the vine disintegrated and Tess was quickly walking away, Clive started to follow after Tess. As Tess was always there for Arthur, he was there for her. Arthur directed his killing intent right towards Clive, causing him to stop in his tracks and fall to a knee. The killing intent only lasted for a second, but it was enough to cause Clive to look around frantically before leaving in the opposite direction. Arthur knew Tess could easily handle Clive if she had to, but he saw no reason why she should if he could handle him first. Sylvie sat upon Arthur's head proud of her papa, as he started following after Tess.

It didn't take Arthur long to catch up to Tess as he saw her leaning up against a tree taking deep breaths as she worked to calm herself down.

"Are you ok?" Arthur asked as he approached.

Tess jumped a little, being surprised by Arthur's sudden appearance. "I'm fine, just had to handle a student council president issue," Tess replied with a warm smile.

Arthur briefly became lost in that smile and just stood there for a moment. Ever since Tess kissed Arthur and professed her feelings for him there had been an internal struggle going on within him. His mind kept reminding him that despite his body being that of a twelve, almost thirteen year old, due to his reincarnation his mind was that of a forty year old man and there was something wrong with him wanting a relationship with the teen elf. At the same time his heart kept telling him she was well more than a friend and to hold and kiss her. Both his mind and heart agreed on one thing, that he did at least like her, but due to the fact that even in his past life he never felt love he wasn't sure if he was in love or not.

"Well then, if you're not busy, would you like to join me for breakfast?"Arthur asked.

"No thanks, I don't really like the cafeteria breakfast," Tess replied as she shook her head with a frown.

"Yeah neither do I. That's why I was going to that cafe on the other side of the campus," Arthur replied.

Tess' head perked up as a hopeful smile quickly formed on her face. "The one with all the tasty pastries?"

"That's the one. So do you want to go? My treat," Arthur replied with a little chuckle at her response as his hands gestured the way.

"Sure," Tess replied and quickly walked beside him as he started walking.

Despite Arthur not knowing if he was in love or not, he started doing little things like this, taking Tess out on little 'dates'. He was not very romantic about it, but the more he did these, the more he spent time with her, the more his heart started to win over his head.

"So what do you think of the plan for this summer?" Tess asked as they walked together.

"It sounds like a lot of fun," Arthur replied in a casual tone.

"Great! And I'm sorry about telling everyone you were an adventurer. I probably should have asked you first, but I wanted all this to be a surprise," Tess apologized in a saddened tone as she looked down.

"Don't worry about it. It's not like you actually told everyone, I did that. Besides, after everyone saw that I was a quadra-elemental, had a beast will, and saw Sylvie in her dragon form, I don't think people learning about me being an adventurer is really that big of a deal," Arthur replied with a chuckle as he pulled her into a side hug.

In the beginning of the school year Tess probably would have panicked and pushed away. Not because she didn't want the hug, but because she felt she needed to present herself as the cold authoritative student council president. However over the past year with seeing and spending time with Arthur every day she had relaxed her image a bit. Over time while in the presence of Arthur she began to show happiness, something everyone else thought she was incapable of. Before the attack several people started wondering if there was something between them, now the whole school wondered the nature of their relationship, as at times they only looked like only friends, and at other times they appeared to be more. But despite all of this, when Tess needed to be the student council president, she was the same Tess they knew from before.

"Right. I guess it is a little silly for me to worry about that considering everything else people know about you," Tess said as she perked up. "Also I want you to know, if this really does happen, Claire and I have agreed neither of us want to be the leader."

"What? Why not?" Arthur asked curiously.

"In the school setting we might be best suited to be the leaders, but out there we'd be completely clueless," Tess admitted.

"Well who will lead then?" Arthur asked suspiciously.

"You," Tess replied quickly.

"What?!" Arthur replied in shock, as Tess just replied with her 'teehee' expression. "Tess," Arthur groaned.

"Oh don't worry, I didn't just pick you because you're you. We decided based on the fact that you have the experience. And yes I know Elijah has experience too, that's why we're actually putting it to a vote between the two of you," Tess replied.

"Thank you. I just don't want to be given the position if not everyone agrees with it," Arthur replied in a calmer tone.

"I figured that much, but I'll still be voting for you," Tess said with a confident smile.

The two soon arrived at the cafe shortly after they opened, before a line could actually form. As they arrived at the counter to place their order, they were greeted by a short old woman with a warm smile that could make one feel as if they were being greeted by their own grandmother.

"Good morning Arthur, Sylvie," the woman said warmly then turned her said slightly to Tess. "And who is this? Arthur did you finally get yourself a girlfriend?" The old woman teased. Arthur just blushed as he looked away, while Tess giggled. "I don't mean to embarrass you two, you just look like such a darling couple. But anyway, I take it you and Sylvie would like your usual?"

"Yes please." "Kyu," Sylvie replied cheerfully.

"And what would you like miss?" The woman asked Tess.

"How about a gooey cinnamon bun and a mixed fruit juice," Tess answered with a pleasant smile.

"That'll be two silvers," the woman replied. Arthur then handed the woman two silver coins, and they then went to a table to wait for their food.

"So, you come here so much that you have a usual?" Tess asked with a smile and raised eyebrow.

"Well Sylvie really likes it here," Arthur replied with a smile as he scratched his right cheek.

"KYUUU!," Sylvie replied loud and cheerfully as she jumped off of Arthur's head and onto the table. Which translated to, 'BACON!'

Just then the old woman arrived at the table and began placing plates in front of everyone. "And for Sylvie being extra adorable today, I gave you a little extra bacon."

"KYUU!" Sylvie replied adorably and began eating.

"Awe, so cute," the woman commented about Sylvie then walked away.

Tess picked up her fork and knife and began cutting into a cinnamon roll that was probably too big to pick up and eat with her hands neatly. As she brought her first bite to her mouth a glob of cinnamon icing dropped back down onto her plate. As she chewed her first bite she noticed Arthur looking at her with a smile as he shook his head.

"Woot?" Tess asked, her mouth still full.

"Nothing, just you and that sugar induced coma waiting to happen on your plate," Arthur replied.

"But it's soo good," Tess said after she swallowed her bite, as her body relaxed and a smile formed on her face. "You should try some," Tess suggested, and began cutting.

"No thanks, I'll keep to my omelette," Arthur replied.

"Nope, too late. Say ahh," Tess replied quickly as she lifted another piece up with her fork. Arthur relented quickly and reached for Tess' fork. However Tess used her other hand to swat away his and continued to bring it to Arthur's mouth. Slowly Arthur opened his mouth as his eyes locked on Tess' while she focused on his mouth and the food she was putting in. Arthur couldn't help but stare into her turquoise eyes and forget the world around him, causing him to completely missing the blush on her face. Tess had stood up from her chair and leaned forward, bringing herself closer. As Tess got closer Arthur swore he could smell the scent of flowers coming from her, making him wonder is she was wearing perfume. As Arthur felt the food enter his mouth he closed it as Tess pulled away her fork.

"So how is it?" Tess asked as she sat back down.

Arthur had already picked up a napkin and placed it over his mouth as he wiped some of the icing that was still on his lips, the napkin opened more than needed to help cover his own blush. "Gude," Arthur replied as he chewed. Tess then smiled sweetly as she continued eating.

Arthur could then hear snickering in his head, and looked down to see his dragon bond looking up at him with a smile. "Not a word," Arthur told her sternly as he picked up his cup to take a sip of a dark brown liquid.

"What? I wasn't going to say anything about how cute that was or how flustered you were," Sylvie replied innocently and went back to eating her bacon.

As the cup came back down Tess took notice. "What is that?" She questioned as she gestured to the cup.

"Java tea," Arthur replied with satisfied smile.

If there was one thing that Arthur missed from his past life it was coffee. In his early years he tried to find his favorite breakfast drink, but never had any luck. It wasn't until one of his patrols at Xyrus Academy that he finally caught a whiff of the aroma of roasting coffee beans. That was how he ended up at this cafe, as he arrived the next morning to investigate. Upon inquiring about the aroma the old woman explained that it came from java beans that were used to make a drink. The beans were a little bigger than a coffee bean, but looked the same, so he asked for a cup. The old woman looked at Arthur skeptically, as student rarely would ask for the drink unless it was time for exams and they were pulling all night cram sessions. However the woman entertained the idea and gave Arthur a shot glass sized cup of a black liquid. Assuming it was just for the sake of a sample Arthur didn't question it, and took it like a shot. Almost instantly Arthur was gaging. In his past life he would drink black coffee or shots of espresso without issue, but this was not like the coffee he remembered. The bitterness of the shot was beyond anything he had ever had, the first thought he had was that it was as if he licked a skunk, as this ruined his taste buds for the remainder of the day.

Arthur took to the library at his first opportunity, and found a book that described the beans. He learned that the java plant only grew in the southern most end of Sapin by the beast glades, but had never been able to be grown on farms even in the area, which explained why he hadn't found it till now, as it was very rare. The book stated that a single bean could restore a persons energy and keep them from sleeping for nearly a day. This made it sound like a coffee bean, only more concentrated. Normally Arthur was too practical to put this much effort into something so frivolous, but coffee was something he truly enjoyed from his past life and wanted to continue it if he could.

The next morning he went back to the cafe, but this time he was ready. Even though in his past life he preferred his coffee black, he did know that sugar and milk could cut the bitterness. So he ordered the Java 'shot' again, and this time with a cup of hot milk. The old woman was confused by the idea, but did as Arthur asked. After mixing the two together Arthur was pleased to find that it didn't taste like nearly as bad, but instead tasted just like black coffee. The woman was surprised that Arthur was enjoying it and tried it for herself, then added it to the menu.

"Java tea? You actually like that?" Tess asked with a disgusted surprised expression.

"If you mix it with milk the flavor is a lot better," Arthur replied, then slid the cut closer to Tess. "Do you dare to try it?" Arthur asked with a taunting smirk.

Tess' eyes narrowed on Arthur, then shifted to the cup and picked it up, accepting the challenge. She then took a deep breath and put the cup up to her lips. "Ugh, yuck," Tess said after the smallest amount touched her tongue. "How can you drink that?" Tess then shoved another bite of her overly sweet pastry into her mouth to get rid of the Java flavor.

Arthur shrugged. "I don't know, I just do. Maybe it's an acquired taste, or perhaps a mental thing seeing as I am a part time teacher, and I've seen plenty of the other teachers drinking it."

A little while later the two had to part ways as Arthur had morning classes and Tess didn't. Arthur pretty much daydreamed through his first class, Fundamentals of Mana Theory. His head was completely full from the busy morning he had already had. The excitement of returning to the beast glades as an adventurer was a major thought, and he tried to keep it in the front of his mind. However the time he spent with Tess this morning kept pushing its way up, forcing him to have the same internal argument as always.

Next was one of Arthur's favorite classes, Practical Mana Manipulation, a favorite because he was the teacher. Arthur stood outside of the class room, his head still a clouded mess. The bell rang for class to start, so Arthur used a combination of wind and ice magic to create a frigid blast of wind that he directed at his face to try and get himself to focus on his class.

"Good morning everyone," Arthur said as he walked in and to his podium, Sylvie proudly perched on his head as if it was her throne. As he looked out at the class he could see all of them were ready to hear his lesson, even his fellow disciplinary committee members. After the attack at the school many of the regular students looked upon him with fear as they remembered what he did to Lucas. The disciplinary committee students were the first to warm back up to him, so fast in fact that one might wonder if they were ever actually scared of him. The students in his class were the second group. Weather it was due to them just getting over their fear, or they wanted to learn from him in the hopes of becoming stronger like him he wasn't sure, but he was glad to not see fear in their eyes anymore.

"Now, when Director Goodsky had asked me to take over this class I was told this was going to just be temporary, until a replacement was found. As you can see, that plan did not work out," Arthur stated, earning a few chuckles, although no one knew where this was going. "With that said I never received a course curriculum. Because of that I recently learned we have significantly deviated from the course plan." Many students started groaning, thinking they were going to have to retake the course. "After finally receiving the specifics areas of study for this course, I learned that not only did we complete everything, but also started into the Intermediate Manna Manipulation course," Arthur stated as he clapped. "and you all have done amazingly well. So next year when you take that course you are already going to have a head start." The class erupted into applause upon hearing this, as next year they would be the shinning stars of the class.

"Since we have only one month left of class, and I have been informed by the intermediate mana manipulation Professor to not go any further into teaching his course, we will just be preparing for and taking your final exams."

The whole class groaned at the word exams.

"I know, I don't look forward to them either. That's why I'm thankful I get to choose how to administer the exam. So next week will be a review of everything you've learned, and then we will be doing the exam until everyone's done." Many of the students looked at Arthur confused as to how exams would take so long. "Your exam will be a demonstration of what you've learned. I'll be having you all demonstrate in the form of a dual between two students at a time. I'll watch you all duel as you apply what you learned, and give you feedback on how you did. We should be able to complete all exams in a week and a half, and if I need to have anyone retake, that would only take up maybe the rest of the week."

Kathyln raised her hand, to which Arthur acknowledged her so she would speak. "Based on your plan, as long as it doesn't take more time, that still leaves a week at the end. What will happen with that time?"

"That last week will be spent defying the Intermediate Mana Manipulations class Professor and we start learning that material," Arthur said with a smirk.
